From what I’ve read in the poem by Laura Tohe, Deep in the Rock is that how she starts off saying why the earth is red and everything around us is the way it is, which somehow reminds us where we came from and how we still have a culture to go abide by. The way I see her explaining is how we have Mother Earth and Father Sun to let us see the color red, whereas we come from birth covered in blood from our mothers we have today. Then, to also give us a reminder that what our before generations have gone through when everyone wanted credit for what they just took and made us Native Americans vulnerable. What else she has explained in the portion of the sentence,“quickening of our hearts”, is meant by how wherever we went and into other worlds
