Life Cycle Assessment of Nissan Cars

*ASR: Automobile Shredder Residue. ASR is what remains after material recycling is done to recover as much ferrous and non-ferrous metallic material as possible from the automobile shredder residue.
Nissan conducted LCAs since the early 1990s, and made quantitative comparisons to understand the environmental impact of materials that were changed in the following parts. * Radiators * Air conditioners * Front-end modules * Back doors
Based on the results of the LCA Project carried out by the LCA Committee of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association from October 1997 to March 2001, Nissan reviewed in-house LCA methods and calculated results for major models. * May 2005: Inventory analysis was certified as being in accordance with the LCA method stipulated in JIS Q14040 by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry.
Models that have undergone LCA: Skyline (made in Japan), Dualis (made in England)
To develop more environmentally-friendly vehicles, LCAs are also conducted for new technologies that are introduced. These results are used to achieve the goals set out in the Nissan Green Program 2010* and the Nissan QCT-C* management policy, which clarify our environmental efforts. * *Nissan Green Program 2010: An environmental program that establishes activity plans and specific numerical targets for Nissan to achieve by 2010. * *QCT-C: Quality, Cost, Time - CO2. A Nissan management policy that aims to achieve higher quality at reasonable cost, shorter times, and with fewer CO2 emissions.
Life cycle CO2 emissions of Electric Vehicle Nissan LEAF

Nissan LEAF reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 40% compared with a comparable gasoline vehicle on the basis of LCA, as verified by Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI), a public assessment institution. Nissan continues to make efforts for further CO2 emissions reduction beyond the electric vehicles through new technologies for improving drive-train and production efficiencies.
High capacity batteries used in electric vehicles will be used not only as an energy source for driving, but also can be repurposed a storage device for mass introduction of renewable energies. Electric vehicles have an opportunity to support the de-carbonization of the society.

Life cycle of one NVC has the potential of inducing global warming equivalent with 20.48 kg of CO2 equivalents, acidification equivalent with 0.06 kg of SO2, eutrophication equivalent with 0.017 kg of NOx, Ecotoxicity equivalents to 28.81 kg 1, 4-dichlorobenzene, 6.03 kg of 1, 4-dichlorobenzene equivalent human toxicity. According to whole life cycle, use phase is dominant for global warming. Raw material production phase has an impact on almost each category excluding global warming. Another vital factor is the transportation emissions. End of life has very less impact since the recycling of car is good in Europe. One night vision camera generates 1.89 kg waste and consuming 701 L water with total energy 1687 MJ from all the phases and all types of energies. Since there is lack of data for some components, so quality of the data could be improved further, provided there is time. Especially for lens, sensor and PCB which will result in much better view towards results. The suppliers can be chosen according to their ranking and it might be useful to do sensitivity as well as uncertainty analysis.

Reduce Carbon Footprint of Travel * Combine one trip with another * Do car pooling. Just once in a week saves 20% * Start walking for short distance instead of travelling via vehicles * Think it through whether the trip is needed or not? * Start working from home occasionally.
Reduce Carbon Footprint Air Travel * Nonstop flights are better than connecting flights. * Do some research ahead of time to find better ground travel options at destination. * While away from home, unplug all the electronic compliances. * For some trips, train may be a good choice.
