CAREER FIELD BRIEFING NARRATIVE

(S #1) Welcome to the Chaplain Assistant Career Field Briefing!!!

(S #2) Briefing Overview: During this briefing we will discuss what our unique and dynamic career field involves. I will talk to you about how the Chaplaincy started, the Chaplain Assistant career field, the selection process to retrain, and what you can expect at technical school. We will close with an interview conducted by the Wing Chaplain and NCOIC, Chapel Operations.

(S#3) Purpose of Briefing: The purpose of this briefing is to inform you about the Chaplain Assistant career field so you can make a well-informed decision about joining our career field. It will also help us determine your compatibility with the Chaplain Assistant career field and the Chaplain Service.

(S#4) What is the Air Force Chaplain Service: In 1776 the Continental Congress officially recognized the Chaplaincy. General George Washington appointed the first Chaplain. Since 1776, Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants have been present in every major conflict.

(S#5) Why is there a Chaplain Service: The Chaplain Service exists to honor The First Amendment—the right to the free exercise of religion for Air Force members and their families.

(S#6) Who are Chaplains: Chaplains are ordained clergy as well as commissioned Air Force officers from diverse faith groups (Christian, Jewish, Muslim), as well as a wide variety of sects or denominations within those faith groups. Chaplains are non-combatants, which means they cannot carry a weapon. They have special qualifications to perform religious rites and counseling. Counselees have the privilege of total confidentiality with a chaplain. Sometimes you may overhear sensitive information in the chapel and you must not discuss with anyone other than with the chaplain involved in the situation.

(S#7) Who are Chaplain Assistants: Chaplain Assistants are enlisted Air Force Chaplain Service members who strive to build a culture of spiritual care for Air Force members and their families. We are uniquely trained to assist the chaplains while pursuing the Chaplain Service vision of Glorifying God, Honoring Airmen, and Serving All. We are non-clergy, which means we do not perform religious rites--preach, marry or bury--or provide religious/pastoral counsel. Chaplain assistants are combatants and carry weapons, as required.

(S#8) Who are Chaplain Assistants: Chaplain Assistants, in direct association with chaplains, support religious observances, pastoral care, and advising leadership, under the auspice of Global Ministry.

(S#9) Chaplain Assistants Provide: Chaplain Assistants support religious observances, for example, worship services, baptisms, weddings, funerals and memorial services. We initiate, plan, execute, and control support of chapel sponsored religious events. We support pastoral care to include counseling and referral, spiritual nurture, renewal and retreats, visitation and religious instruction.

(S#10) Chaplain Assistants Provide: Chaplain Assistants are prepared to execute the Chaplain Service mission any place, any time. We partner with Chaplains to form Religious Support Teams (RST) to provide for, develop, and strengthen spiritual and moral well-being of all members we are assigned with. We provide an enlisted perspective for chaplains and provide advice on spiritual needs of unit personnel, staying especially attuned to enlisted concerns. In the deployed environment chaplain assistants coordinate force protection. Chaplain assistants also partner with chaplains to respond to aircraft crash and mass casualty sites, hostage situations, casualty collection points, evacuation and deployment processing points and work centers. We assist chaplains with spiritual triage by applying conversation, observation and listening skills. We activate the chapel control center in the event of crises and mass casualty events. The control center keeps the chaplains apprised of the situation and allows the senior chaplain and chaplain assistant to effectively position chaplains and chaplain assistants where they are needed most.

(S#11) Chaplain Assistants Provide: Chaplains and chaplain assistants serve as expeditionary combat airmen, chaplains as non-combatants and chaplain assistants as combatants. As combatants, chaplain assistants are trained to the Air Force standard of qualification for ECA. We are trained for defensive tactics only. As members of a RST, chaplains and chaplain assistants remain together and work side-by-side in their respective non-combatant/combatant roles to ensure their safety and the protection of those in the immediate area, while ministering and providing support to the spiritual and emotional needs of victims in trauma. Chaplain assistants qualify on the M9 handgun and draw it as our primary weapon. We also must qualify on the M16. Chaplain assistants serve as the “eyes and ears” for chaplains and provide advice on spiritual needs of unit personnel, staying especially attuned to enlisted concerns.

(S# 12) Chaplain Assistants Manage: We manage manpower positions and personnel. We manage lay volunteers by recruiting, organizing, training and recognizing. We also manage appropriated funds and Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund (CTOF), which are the monies received during worship services. We manage the maintenance and use of religious facilities, supplies and equipment. We manage the chapel administration, which includes files, forms, publications, publicity, professional correspondence, trend analysis, operating instructions, and other administrative needs of the Chaplain Service mission.

(S#13) The Career Field involves: Our job involves working in a diverse religious environment and being aware and considerate of religious and cultural needs of others. We work with Chaplains and volunteers from different faith groups and are visible reminders of the Holy.

(S#14) Career Field Opportunities: To provide support for religious observances, we are required to work weekends, holidays and evenings. Assignments are governed by the needs of the Air Force. You will deploy. You also have the opportunity to get an Associates degree in Social Science through the Community College of the Air Force.

(S#15) Chaplain Assistant Selection Process: Chaplain Assistants are recruited and retrained from other enlisted career fields. You must meet the mandatory requirements, receive this briefing, be interviewed by the NCOIC, Chapel Operations and the Wing Chaplain, be recommended for retraining, and sign a volunteer statement to become a Chaplain Assistant.

(S#16) Mandatory Qualifications: The mandatory qualifications to become a chaplain assistant are: No major criminal offenses; no history of emotional instability, personality disorder, or other unresolved mental health issues; have the ability to speak clearly and distinctly; and have ASVAB scores of 35 in Administration and 44 in General.

(S#17) Desirable Qualifications: Although it is not required, it helps to have knowledge of keyboarding and computer operations; English for good communications; information systems; world religions; and human behavior like sociology and psychology. If you do not have one, you will need to obtain a valid driver’s license in order to operate government vehicles. It is highly desirable that you have high moral standards. If your lifestyle is not compatible with the Chaplain Service, you may feel uncomfortable working in the chapel.

(S#18) Technical School Information: The Chaplain Assistant Technical School is a 6-week course at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. The course covers basic administrative skills; religious practices; basic crisis and suicide intervention skills and counseling support; and mobility and deployment exercises. You will participate in physical conditioning during the course.
