Leadership and Management Collage of Staten Island Nursing 411

Introduction This paper is based on leadership and the management styles that I chose to do research on. I will apply a leadership management theory I think best represented my leader. It will comprise of an observation part; that deals with who this leader is, what they are famous about, who did they lead, inspire, entices or irritate and how people react to their leadership. The theory part will describe the leadership and management theory that best represented them and the Analysis part will describe their actions, beliefs, how effective their goals were, and was this the best leadership style for the group or era they were practicing in.
Observation:
Margaret Sander born in 1879 is the famous for her role in getting contraceptives for the poor in an era where only the “affluent and the educated in American society were the only ones to have reliable contraception” (Allender et al 2010, p. 32).She was inspired individually after her own mother died in her 18th pregnancies at the age of 48years battled Tuberculosis, but her
“pregnancy contributed to her both contracting the disease and eventually succumbed to it”(Allender 2010, p.32). She then went to White Plain Hospital as a nurse probationer, and later became a visiting nurse. She is a social reformer, sex educator, and a nurse. The issue of contraception was very dear to especially in the 1912, “Sanger watched helplessly as a 28 year old woman of three died from abortion induced septicemia” that woman had secretly asked her ways to prevent pregnancy ( Allender 2012, p32). She could not do anything then because of the Constitutional Act of 1873 that prohibit the provision of any information about contraception to the populace. So then in 1916, she took matters in her own hands and opened an office in the Brooksville section of Brooklyn that provide birth control information. Immediately that office opened, ten days later she was arrested for operating the first birth control clinic in America. She continued this battle of defiance with the Law and this unjust until“ eventually resulted in the formation of the International Planned Parenthood Federation”
( Allendre, 2010, p. 32). She is criticized by opponents of birth control and eugenicist. Most of
Sanders ideology came from her encounter with Havelock Ellis, a renounce psychologist in
1914. She gave the woman a choice to have sex but it should be confidence/ respected. Women have the ability to control their sexual impulses. She opposes masturbation but never opposed homosexuality. She also support negative Eugenicist “elimination of the unfit” which others misinterpreted her stand on this issue. Sanger work with all population; she will not tolerate
Bigotry, for even help opened a birth control clinic in Harlem staffed will all colored professional, and for that was praised by Martin Luther King Jr. for her fight for equality on contraception and the freedom of choice regarding procreation.
Theory:
Leadership according to Marquis and Huston 2012 is the “act of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal” (p.31).“ leaders lead, and is the inspiration and director of the action. They are in the front, moving forward, taking risks, and challenging the status quo”
(p. 32). Leadership slightly defers from manager because manager “is a person who brings things about, has responsibility, accomplishes, and conducts” (p.32). Leadership roles includes a decision maker, communicator, critical thinker, advocate, change agent, visionary, creative problem solver etc. to mention but of a few. In the literature I read, successful leaders do show some characteristics that I belief that the late Margaret Sanger exhibited. These include intelligence, independence, judgment, creativity, social participant, risk taking, adaptability, self-confidence, interpersonal skills, and personal integrity and others. The Great Man /trait theory by Aristotle developed in the mid-1940 “asserts that, some people are born to lead, whereas others are born to be led. Also great leaders will arise when the situation demands it” Marquis &Huston 2012, p.37). Furthermore Mary Parker Follett, in her literature book in 1970 on law of situation said that, the situation should determine the directives given after allowing everyone to know the problem” in situational or contingency leadership theory (Marquis & Huston 2012 P. 39). The leadership theories are many, and Sanger does fall between many of them, especially since she incorporated many psychologist, and scientific researched outcomes in her dealing. The leadership theory I believe best represented Margret Sanger is the Thought leadership that emerged in this 21st century. This “applied to a person who is recognized among his or her peers for innovative ideas and who demonstrates the confidence to promote those ideas
(Marquis &Huston 2012, p.59). Though leaders are risk taker, challenge the status quo, problem- oriented, and innovative. Their ideas are future oriented and makes a significant impact. Because thought leadership is projected to be the new face in nursing and health care, safety and quality improvement, that is why I put Margaret Sanger in this category; for what she did was mostly geared toward safe nursing practice. Corny, New York and died 1966 in Tuscan Arizona was a Social reformer, Sex educator and
Nurse, is popular for her role as the first to open a birth control clinic in America. She forth for the American Reproduction and unsafe abortion prevention. Beliefs in women have the right to to fair and equal reproduction choice. She challenged the system that favors only the affluent in the society getting contraceptive even though there was a law that prohibit such action. Sanger leadership theory brought us the changes and an open system of contraceptive in America today. Her effort in those era met many challenges including series of arrest and closing of the clinic.
Her belief for change was influenced by her own mother’s death through multiple pregnancies and during her practice as a visiting nurse, the side effect people were getting as a result of abortion. She was perceived by critics as eugenic because of her support, but she was against interracial treatment. This she showed by helping them open clinic in Harlem, something that was recognized by the Association of the Color People later. The thought theory that I used still focus on this issue she was fighting. It reminiscence still present among the religious and critics for abortion and family planning. She was effective in her goals ultimately; for Plan Parenthood centers and offices are located everywhere in the nation. Her reform helped most women and men to make inform choices in their life. Thereby “safety and quality improvement approaches that actually reduce the risk of harm to patient.” (Marquis & Huston 2012, p. 59) She is an inspirations to many especially women in this 21st century who wants to be able to plan their life careers and have children at their appropriate time without pressure of having to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Sangers’ mission still irritate the prolife group and some religious affiliates that propagate for more children and does conflict their religious or cultural practices. People did reacted negatively during the 19th century mostly because the issue of sex and contraception was not a public topic and during those times the churches were ruling against abortion and ways to prevent pregnancy even though some “ people did have contraceptive at their disposal; but not the poor.
