BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The SBM Bank (Mauritius) Ltd is a leading financial services group in Mauritius with a growing international presence. It provides all services of a universal bank within a diversified business model. The lines of business include: Retail Banking, Small and Medium Enterprises, Wealth Management & Private Banking, Corporate Banking and International Banking & Global Business, Treasury services, E-Business, Fiduciary services, Asset Financing, Stock broking and Asset Management.
A brief history of the bank is introduced below.

• From 1973 to 1983 - launching expansion of social banking.

The study examines contemporary leadership theory and practice in order to chart the direction of leadership thinking and to determine how these themes can be integrated into existing organizational leadership model. Questionnaire and interviews have been used for data collection. After analysis of these data appropriate assessments and recommendations will be made for improvements.
It takes on the following questions: How has leadership in the private sector changed during the last twenty years? What are the most crucial elements in leadership? What are the most important elements in leadership? What are the main leadership competencies? How leaders can be develop for the near future? For individual career success and organizational performance, the success of individual careers and the fate of organizations are determined by the effectiveness of leaders` behavior. Leadership is not about superiority and power compared to others in an organization.
The topic of leadership has generated excitement and interest long time ago. When people think about leadership, images come to mind of powerful individuals who lead victorious armies, shape the events of nations, and develop religious or direct corporate empires. In fact, leadership can be termed as the most relevant aspect of all organizational aspects, and its better definition would be depending upon the circumstances. Various leadership theories are produced by researchers taking into consideration the situation, behavior, power, charisma, intelligence and function.

Great Man theory states that there two basic assumptions; that leaders are born and not made, and that great leaders will come up when there is a need.

Leadership in not management. In fact management and leadership must go in hand in hand. They are not the same thing although they are linked and complementary. The manager1s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leader`s job is to inspire and motivate. Warren Bennies composed a list of differences in his 1989 book “On Becoming a Leader”

Its enrollment rates at all levels of education were higher than those of other countries with comparable, or even higher, income levels. But no longer. Any edge that the Philippines might have had in its human capital has eroded as more developing countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as cases in point – have achieved higher enrollment rates even at the secondary level (figure 1).
