The Excerpt from Leadership is an Art by Max DePree was very interesting and i took in a lot. It stated that the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality and the last is the say thank you. And in between those things a leader must become a servant and a debater to his/her followers to please them and stick up for what they believe is right. I never thought of this now until i read that the measure of leadership is no the quality of the head, but the tone of the body. Meaning that a person doesn’t have to know all these extraordinary things or be super smart to have leadership, but one should be strong minded and be able to stick up for their goals and morals. The signs of outstanding leadership is primarily based upon the followers. Do the followers learn anything or are they achieving the required results. He refers to a gospel excerpt stating the a leader is “one who serves”. Many think that jesus was a leader because he served his followers, he put himself before all others, whether they believed in him or not. He basically gave his life for us in order to serve us and give us a better life. Without people there would be no leaders. Leaders must deliver must deliver to their organizations the appropriate services, products,tools, and equipment that people need in order to be accountable. When a leader is apart of an institution they must decide whether or not to leave their assets to the organization or pass on their legacy to another person. They are responsible for future leaders and need to identify, develop, and nurture their chosen future candidates. To be a leader comes responsibility and maturity. Maturity is expressed in a sense of self-worth, or belonging. Someone who is responsible or mature is a person who holds themselves accountable for their own mistakes and actions and someone who has a sense of equality, they must not think that they are better than any one else or at least not show that they think that because that will give off a bad attitude an aura and would not attract many followers. Leaders should be rational, able to understand the programs and relationships. Also leaders must be efficient. He talks about two ways to understanding effectiveness, one comes from enabling others to reach their highest potential, both their personal and institutional. A leader is a judge of people. Another way to improve effectiveness is to encourage roving leadership. Roving leaders gave a special gift or strengths to lead in certain special situations. To be a leader is to enjoy the special privileges of complexity, diversity, and ambiguity. But to be a leader means have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who permit leaders to lead them. Overall this excerpt went into a different direction about leadership, explored different ways of viewing what is expected of a leader and certain roles a leader must achieve in order to succeed.

She articulates, “In today’s financially driven business environment, Max De Pree helps readers to pause, take a deep breath, and examine their own personal ‘art of leadership.’ This is an extraordinary book that avoids quick management theory and brings the reader back to the reality that human values form the basis for extraordinary leadership” (De Pree, n.pag.). This is clear throughout the book as De Pree advocates for a servant leadership, similar to Colleen Barrett from Southwest Airlines who also advocates for such humanistic leadership. De Pree points out later in the book that owners are “liable for hard assets and also a legacy for their corporate heirs” (De Pree, p. 95). This is a powerful statement that I will discuss in greater detail. De Pree’s major theme can best be summed up by dealing closely with the esteem needs of people and the philosophy of positive organizational behavior (McShane, p. 77). De Pree postulates that the most effective way of leading be “participative leadership,” which deals with meeting employee esteem needs for “belonging, for contributing, for meaningful work, for the opportunity to make a commitment, for the opportunity to grow and be at least reasonably in control of our own destinies (De Pree, p. 23). I have always felt like I was a pretty good leader, but after this semester I have greatly improved on many of my leadership skills. Although I still have some weaknesses when it comes to leadership, this semester has helped me learn a lot about myself as a leader and as a person. Over the semester I learned that I have much more leadership potential than I thought. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs them in a way that makes the unit more cohesive and coherent. Obviously, leadership can be learned but, the skills and knowledge processed by a leader can be influenced by their traits such as beliefs, ethics, and character. Just like trait theories, contingency theories, situation theories, behavioral theories, and etc. As I believe, different theories could demonstrate leadership in distinctive ways. Besides there are not only personality traits or characteristics of the situation could allow certain peoples take the charge. There are much more going on. Accordingly, regarding the question of leadership is an art or science. People probably will choose either art or science or both. So what leadership really is? I will say there is no correct answer. Whilst evaluating this statement, I’ll also question how it differs from management and why? Introducing this essay, it will be an evaluative text looking at key conceptual ideas into the quote stated above by the former United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower and how it differentiates from management.
