Leadership Style Paper
Leadership the word alone invokes a sense of power and pride. The definition of a leader today would be “A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal” (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 45). Today’s business owners strive to find the right leadership to help make their business a success. There are many are four types of leadership theories. There is autocratic leadership-motivated by external forces, democratic leadership- motivated by working relationships, laissez-faire leadership-takes a backseat to decision making, and bureaucratic leadership-is a rule follower. Each leadership has their own unique traits. The type of leadership qualities depends on the person and exactly what their tasks at hand are to be. Jose Costas was one of the best call center managers that this student has ever worked for. Jose’s leadership theory was that of being the democratic leadership style. He encouraged the staff to be involved in setting department goals, interacting with other departments in order for the company to achieve higher goals in customer service. The democratic leadership style “assumes that individuals are motivated by internal drives and impulses, want active participation in decisions, and want to get the task done; the leader uses participation and majority rule in setting goals and working toward achievement” (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 46). He is considered to be a successful leader because he was able to get what the clients wanted which was excellent customer service, he lead the Staten Island office into first place when it came to reaching departmental goals, and his tenure with the company is the only time retention numbers were high.
