Leadership Style Leadership style is really important. Although there is no right or wrong leadership style the book mentions 3 styles in particular. First style the book mentions is Autocratic leader, which means they like to make decisions and tell others what to do. The second style is a democratic leader, which means they like to take everybody’s ideas into consideration and make a decision that would best fit what everybody wants. The third is laissez- faire leader, which like to let everyone make decisions for themselves. I believe that my leadership style is laissez- faire. I usually not one to make decisions but more guide others to make decisions for themselves. I am there for others when they have questions, but I do not like to tell them how to do something if there are multiple ways it can be completed. For example if somebody asks me how to do something, I will show them the way I do it but I will also show them other ways it can be completed. This way they can decide for themselves which way they like the best and which is easiest for them. I like this leadership style because it gives people options and more freedom on how they can complete their work. As long as the work gets done correctly, I believe that this empowers the employees and gives them chances to find ways that are easiest from them instead of having one person make all the decisions. They employees could also still come to the supervisor with any questions to get help, but for the most part they would have the freedom on how they choose to get their work completed. Somethings I can do to improve my leadership skills is learning how to make tough decisions when it is necessary. The reason I really like the laissez- faire leadership style is because it gives me a break from making decisions for others, so I mostly only have to focus on the decisions I have to make for myself. I am also kind of a perfectionist so I often have trouble with delegating. Delegating would help in times when I have a lot on my plate and I need to learn to trust others by handing some of the work down to someone who does not have as much work to complete. These things would benefit me and help me become a better leader.

As well as the reading, I completed an assessment “What’s Your Leadership Style?” (About.com). This assessment, as well as my reading of the material identified my style as participative and situational leadership.
