Leadership Styles
A past supervisor has traits that fit all profiles listed in the negative leadership styles handout. If I had to go with just one, I would say the Kipper. While in our department we saw a very abrasive side to her, if one of our team members made a mistake they were publicly chastised and humiliated in the office. She often spoke ill of certain employees. The atmosphere in our office was such that there was no talking at any time. Everyone, with the exception of her close friends, looked miserable. Outside of our office, the higher ups found her to be pleasant. On the rare occasion that an employee had the confidence to complain and our supervisor found out she would make the workplace so hostile that the employee would quit. Having been under her supervision has taught me about the type of supervisor I would like to be.
I would like to be the transformational leader. Working as a team towards a common goal is something that I believe is attainable and necessary to help subordinates feel necessary. From personal experience, I can honestly say that I was motivated to do the best job possible when I had a leader who took the time to work with me, rather than just hand out orders. I was more inclined to trust my supervisor, and the open lines of communication made it easier to come to the supervisor if I encountered an obstacle in my project. As well as the reading, I completed an assessment “What’s Your Leadership Style?” (About.com). This assessment, as well as my reading of the material identified my style as participative and situational leadership. Participative leadership involves engaging multiple group members in the decision making process, as well as problem solving. The leader does have the final choice in the decision.
