...Nursing leadership and management Leadership refers to setting a new direction or a way forward for a group of people, so that can they follow. Management on the other hand is controlling or directing people or resources in a group regarding the values that have already been established. Leadership and being an outstanding leader depends on ones qualities and behaviors that they exhibit in different circumstances or situations (Hader, 2008). Leadership has to go hand in hand with management because; without management, the direction that is set does not reflect on how the new direction is going to be achieved. Others will have to work hard in the shadows that have been left behind by the others. Effective nurse leaders are those who involve others to work together in pursuit of a common goal (Sullivan & Decker, 2005). For this reason, I choose to shadow with my manager for couple of hours to see how a tipical day goes for him. In this essay, I will discuss how my manager manages our unit, his communication style and it effectiveness, his type of leadership style or styles and it effectiveness, and what my thoughts and reactions are about this experience. Our unit is a mixed unit consisting of respiratory and geriatric patients. We also care for stroke patients on the unit. In managing the unit, our manager uses more democratic, or participative leadership style though he also exhibits transactional and transformational styles. According to him...

...Cameron Austin October 19, 2013 Essay Assignment # 1 Ever since the society started to believe that we needed a democracy type of government and a president to lead, we have had over forty men lead us. They have not always been the perfect person for the job but they have tried at least. Some of them have made mistakes and some have done a great job. This is all irrefutable and some can even be found in the twenty one laws of it. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership are a set of laws that are supposed to define the way that you lead and give you a conscious opinion of the type of leader you are. In the laws they go over such things as the law of the lid, navigation, influence, process, addition, and solid ground. Under these laws, they have different steps in which the leading is different. Over the course of the years, we have had a lot of Presidents and a lot of different leading styles among them, some of them being good and some of them being nowhere near good. But we had to live with them and they have to live with themselves. In the movie Fog of War, Robert McNamara tries to go over the eleven lessons that he learned from being under the President of John F. Kennedy. McNamara lends us his knowledge of what went wrong during those years. During President John F. Kennedy's term, while McNamara was Secretary of Defense, America's troops in Vietnam increased from 900 to 16,000 advisers, who were not supposed...

...Management and Leadership: Is There Any Difference? People involved in management recognize the essential role of the effective leadership in any organization. Effective business leadership is an imperceptible quality for many. Leaders are capable not only to differentiate the results of their companies; they can also differentiate the satisfaction levels of the people working within these companies. Nevertheless, I think that management and leadership are not equal notions and to be a manager does not always mean to be a good leader. There is a difference between management and business leadership though both are important. “Management is a function that must be exercised in any business, leadership is a relationship between leader and led that can energize an organization” (Maccoby, 2000, p.57). To manage means to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, to conduct. Leading in business is influencing, guiding, action, opinion. Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing (see Blanchard, 2004). Powerful leaders should have clear visions about their organizations and their purpose is not only to have clear vision, but also to involve and instill the same vision in other employees. When we talk about successful management and leadership it’s also necessary to mention such a notion as transactional leadership which is also important for a successful leader. According to Men (2011) transactional leadership...

Rizal Extension, West Rembo, Makati City College of Allied Health Studies Center of Nursing CONTEMPORARY THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP There has been much research compiled that compares the differences of the classic theories of leadership and management versus contemporary style of leadership and management. Both styles have been found to have their unique advantages, depending on the type of organization the theories are being utilized in. In this paper, I will be discussing the key variables needed in a leadership theory to effectively lead and manage others. I will also examine major components of each theory, and how they compare to one another. Finally, I will examine which theory best fits my leadership qualities, and my ability to lead others in an organizational setting. SERVANT LEADERSHIP theory Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. While servant leadership is a timeless concept, the phrase “servant leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, Greenleaf said: “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of...

Mintzberg’s response was that management and leadership are part and parcel of the same thing and shouldn’t be seperated in practice. He expressed the belief that the seperation of leadership from managament is utterly destructive, because managers who do not lead are boring and leaders who do not manage do not know what is going on. Whilst Mintzberg seems to make a very valid point and the fusion of leading and managing appears logical, it is undeniable that cenceptual differences exist between the term management, and the term leadership. Even without an accepted or definitive distinction...

...Introduction Organisational behavior is a subject that covers a wide variety of topics such as, such as motivation, leadership and organizational design- that relate to different aspects of behavior in organizations. Examining these topics has involved incorporating perspectives and insights from a number of disciplines including psychology, economics, sociology and politics.’ (Knights and Willmott, 2007:p.3) Numerous disciplines that explore the complexity and diversity of collective human activity have contributed to the formation and development of OB. Something of this complexity is apparent in the sometimes conflicting purposes and objective embraced by, or attributed to, management and organizations. Given the demanding nature of organizing and managing people, it is not surprising that OB is widely regarded as the foundation of management studies. (Knights and Willmott, 2007:p.3)Within the notion of behavior, including thinking and feeling as well as acting. OB aspires to have relevance for understanding the behavior of people working at all hierarchical levels- from the workers employed part-time or on a casual basis on the shop floor or in the office to the most senior executive. Each is involved in processes of organizing and being organized and managing and being managed. OB should be better to understand how and why people are organized; to identify and assess the likely consequences of making changes; and to introduce changes in ways that anticipate and minimize...
