CEMS MIM BLOCK SEMINAR Prof. Devi Vijay Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

Stefania Lanfranchi

Introduction This paper constitutes a reflection on my learning gains as a consequence of attending the CEMS MIM BLOCK SEMINAR 2013 at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. In the fol-‐ lowing, I identified five topics, which to me, have contributed greatest to my intellectual and personal development. Notwithstanding, I will neglect certain aspects and course contents of the block seminar. This is however necessary in order to treat selected topics in detail. Clearly, neglecting certain course contents within the limits of this paper does not mean, that they did

Literature Review

...Literature Review Kavitha W * and Anita P ** Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is now prominent and evident more than ever due to the emphasis laid on businesses regarding environmental, social and ethical issues. The level of CSR activities of the firms is made known to public only through the disclosures. This paper reviews the literature on CSR disclosures and the effect of these disclosures. There are various factors which determine the extent of disclosures like the size of the firm, industry, high visibility, etc. Introduction Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is now prominent and evident more than ever due to the emphasis laid on businesses regarding environmental, social and ethical issues. This is because over the recent years, there have been social, political and economic pressures on corporate management to pay attention on social and environmental consequences of corporate activities. These pressures motivated the corporate management to actively participate in a wide range of social welfare activities. CSR now-a-days covers almost all issues like the use of child labor; inequality of employment; environmental impact; involvement in local community; products’ safety; company cultures; brand image and reputation. Apart from this, companies are now disclosing these activities in their annual reports, and one of the parameters to judge the performance of a company is CSR reporting. Corporate Social Responsibility CSR is defined by Naylor (1999) and mentioned...

Our objective is to improve the understanding of how entrepreneurship policies can lead to socially inclusive growth at the BOP. Drawing on data collected from Brazilian tourism destinations with varying entrepreneurship, innovation, and social inclusion policies, we argue that weak institutions coupled with alert entrepreneurs encourage destructive outcomes, especially if entrepreneurship policies are based solely on economic indicators. Policies addressing both economic and social perspectives may foster more productive entrepreneurial outcomes, albeit at a more constrained economic pace. The study extends the related BOP, entrepreneurship, global value chain, and sustainable tourism literatures by examining the poor as entrepreneurs, the role of local innovation, and how entrepreneurship policies generate different social impacts within poor communities. Entrepreneurship

...A brief discussion of the relationship between entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development as well as the role of sustainability in the relationship Introduction: The origin and development on theory As early as the 17th century, the French term "entreprendre "appeared in economics, which evolved into "entrepreneur" as commonly used (Dees,1998). The concept of entrepreneur keeps on developing and varies with the development of socio-economics. Richard Cantillon published his in 1775 “Essay on the Nature of Trade in General" (Murphy,1986). Since then, entrepreneurship was given a definition in the perspective of behavior, including decision-making, sound judgment, supervision of production, innovation, and resource reallocation (Herron, 1993). The new definition of the "entrepreneur" credited by French economists was put by Jean Baptiste in the 19th century "the entrepreneur shifts economic resources out of an area of lower and into an area of higher productivity and greater yield". In this time, entrepreneurship was given the meaning of "creating values"(Dees, 1998). In 1911, “entrepreneur as innovator” was put forward by Schumpeter. In his theory, entrepreneurship nearly the same as innovation is thought to be a critical factor in the promotion of economic development. This theory was unceasingly completed by Schumpeter. Through the process of “disruptive innovation” (Schumpeter, 1942), entrepreneurs create economic opportunities and obtain economic benefits by causing...

...INTRO Entrepreneurship is the “process of creating something different with value by devoting the necessary time and effort, assuming the accompanying financial and social risks, and receiving the resulting rewards or monetary and (/or) personal satisfaction” (Hisrich, 1990). This definition is sufficiently broad encompassing the many paths an entrepreneur may take, be it Schumpeterian profit maximisation or the social entrepreneurial desire to create social wealth (Zahra, 2009). The aim of this essay is to analyse some of the personal traits academics believe to be common to established entrepreneurs, in turn discussing how these strengths and weaknesses are applicable to myself. STRENGTH 1: “Innovativeness with the ability to combine resources effectively” Kirzner’s (2008) view of the entrepreneur is that they are “not creators, merely alert” to opportunities which arise around them. This somewhat contradicts the Schumpeter (ian) (1961) ideology that the entrepreneur is a “heroic… daring… captain of industry”. Forming a hybrid between these views, Casson (1982), states that the “entrepreneurs task (is) to discover and exploit opportunities… where products or services can be sold at a greater cost than their cost of production”. Combining the views of Kirzner and Casson describes the entrepreneur as someone who can spot a solution to a problem by using an existing product in a different application to that which it was originally designed. During my studies of engineering...

Bridging the Valley of Death: Lessons Learned from 14 Years of Commercialization of Technology Education

...providing graduate students skills in technology entrepreneurship and the commercialization of technology. We describe the lessons we have learned from fourteen years of developing commercialization of technology pedagogy and adapting it for use on four continents and within numerous corporations. We demonstrate that the straightforward theory-driven approach that we use to shape the curriculum improves our ability to learn from our mistakes and to structure small experiments to improve the pedagogy. INTRODUCTION Interest in the commercialization of technology and high technology entrepreneurship has increased significantly in the past decade. It is apparent that in many increasingly knowledge-based economies, effective managers will need to be better trained in dealing with technologists and in creating business growth and advantage through commercializing technology. Technical education faces new demands as well. For example, the National Academy of Sciences (COSEPP, 1995) issued a committee statement calling for rethinking graduate education for scientists and engineers to include the skills to promote the commercialization of technologies that they create. As interest in commercialization of technology has increased, so has academic research interest in this area. For example, the Journal of Product Innovation Management recently published a 2 issue special topic volume on technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Topics included a meta analysis of success factors...

You can build your ability to recognize opportunities by holding jobs that put you on ‘‘the cutting edge’’ (e.g., jobs in research and development or marketing), by building a large social network, and by having rich and diverse job—and life—experiences. Steps you can take to increase your access to knowledge: (Hint: Can you increase the breadth of your social network? Read a wider range of magazines, including ones related to your field? Describe these and other steps here.) n Organize your knowledge. Knowledge that is organized is much more useful than knowledge that is not. As you acquire new information, you should actively seek to relate it to what you know so that connections between existing and new information come clearly into focus. Information that is connected and organized in this manner is easier to remember—and to use—than information that it is not. Entrepreuneurship - Learning from Failure

...Entrepreneurs & Entrepreneurship ------------------------------------------------- Entrepreneurs typically learn from failure Florian Moron ID: 33265062 Lancaster University Management School Michaelmas Term 2012 Entrepreneurs typically learn from failure. “Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success”. In this respect, Dale Carnegie (2010) argues that one of the most important lessons from success is failure. It is interesting that Carnegie talks of failure being in everybody’s past, indicating that failure is not a process confined to the entrepreneur. The research undertaken for this paper has been concentrated on four different previous researches of Cope (2009), Ucbasaran et al. (2009, 2012) and Cardon et al. (2009). Attitudes toward failure are not homogeneous among entrepreneurs, however those who have experienced it are disputably more prepared for the battle of entrepreneurship. As a result it is beyond question to understand the deeply affective dimension of failure that include the loss of the venture and the personal loss. Cope’s paper (2009) stresses that learning from failure is not automatic or instantaneous but it represents an essential prerequisite for learning (Wilkinson and Mellahi, 2005, cited by Cope 2009). The learning entrepreneurial experience of failure is articulated trough a major “grief recovery” composed of three interconnected learning components: an initial...

A systematic analysis of eighty-eight journal articles published over the last two decades reveals that IEEE research is a vibrant and rapidly growing stream of the broader international entrepreneurship (IE) domain, and that it is methodologically and topically diverse. Our review also shows that IEEE research has a limited presence in premier journals, is highly skewed in its geographic coverage, and is somewhat fragmented. We therefore inventory...

...217-22G. NOTE THE PROMISE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS A . FIELD OF RESEARCH SCOTT SHANE University of Maryland S. VENKATARAMAN tiniversity of Virginia To date, the phenomenon of entrepreneurship has lacked a conceptual framework. In this note we draw upon previous research conducted in the different social science disciplines and applied fields of business to create a conceptual framework for the field. With this framework we explain a set of empirical phenomena and predict a set of outcomes not explained or predicted by conceptual frameworks already in existence in other fields. For a field of social science to have usefulness, it must have a conceptual framework that explains and predicts a set of empirical phenomena not explained or predicted by conceptual frameworks already in existence in other fields. To date, the phenomenon of entrepreneurship has lacked such a conceptual framework. Rather than explaining and predicting a unique set of empirical phenomena, enfrepreneurship has become a broad label under which a hodgepodge of research is housed. What appears to constitute entrepreneurship research today is some aspect of the setting (e.g., small businesses or new firms), rather than a unique conceptual domain. As a result, many people have had trouble identifying the distinctive contribution of the field to the broader domain of business studies, undermining the field's legitimacy. Researchers in other fields ask why entrepreneurship research is necessary if it does...

Defining the Field of Research

...THE FIELD OF RESEARCH IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP CHIRSTIAN BRUYAT ´ Universite de Grenoble, Grenoble, France ´ PIERRE-ANDRE JULIEN ` ` ´ ´ Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres, ` Tros-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada Although the field of entrepreneurship is recognized as being of fundamental importance for our economy, and although many researchers throughout the world have turned their attention to it, there is, as yet, no agreement as to the research object in this scientific field. Empirical research has described the phenomenon from different standpoints. It has also shown that the phenomenon is much more complex and heterogeneous than was thought in the 1980s. However, to advance knowledge and produce tools that are useful in practice, it has become necessary to establish theories that will generate more productive empirical research. Some effort at definition is therefore needed. The definition proposed here takes a constructivist stance, and is at the service of a research project— that of understanding or forecasting the entrepreneurial act and its success or failure, and defining more accurately the environmental conditions favourable to that act. Here, the scientific object studied in the field of entrepreneurship is the dialogic between individual and new value creation, within an ongoing process and within an environment that has specific characteristics. This definition emphasizes the fact that we will not understand the phenomenon of entrepreneurship if we do not consider the...
