The Environment: The Role It Plays in How One Learns

Have you ever found yourself sitting in a classroom or at a lecture and afterwards not remember anything that was just mentioned? On the other hand, how about that same material was being taught to you and instead of being lectured to you, you were given the opportunity to see it happen or do it for yourself; this time you remembered all the information. People in the past, present and future face this common issue. We all have our own way of learning, and a lot of factors can play into what we remember, and how well we remember them. One factor that contributes to this is the way you specifically learn, or your learning style. There are many types of learning styles out there, but the three most well-known and agreed upon types are Visual, Auditory, and Tactile/Kinesthetic. They all have their own style and setting that make them effective to each individual. A second factor is the setting of the environment you are in. In today’s modern society, the standard classroom is not the only setting to learn in. As such, there is the “traditional” classroom setting versus the online classroom. A third factor is the actual environment you are in and the way it can aid or inhibit your ability to learn. The first type, the Visual method, a person learns and remembers most effectively by having something shown or presented to them. With visual learning, you are more inclined to remember material that has graphs or pictures within or incorporated with the material. This method also is one that can be hard to master, especially if you have a short attention span. As a visual learner, you can often find yourself getting distracted when listening to a lecture. Since a visual learners mind is excited and stimulated through pictures, having a lack of these items can cause someone mind to wonder. With a visual learner, the classroom environment with a teacher lecturing you about a subject can be hard to retain any of the information. A good method of delivery for this style of learner can be with videos. With an online classroom, you are often exposed to video lectures and thus can retain the information more effectively. Another method of delivery could be by watching T.V. With the advent of many educational shows they have these days, the visual learner can retain a lot of the information presented to them. Based on the traits of a visual learner, they could be thought of as someone with a pictographic memory. The second type of learning method is the auditory method. This style of learning is when someone learns or remembers the most when something is spoken to them. With auditory learners, being able to hear the subject being taught is necessary. We have all been exposed to this method of delivery. This type of delivery is most predominating for school settings, with a teacher lecturing a topic to their students. The auditory learner will typically excel when the individual is being lectured to. As a result of technology, this type of learning has taken on a new approach. With the ever-emerging popularity of Podcast, the auditory method has taken on a new method of delivery. With online classrooms, you are once again exposed to these types of things. Many subjects have some type of Podcast that students are required to listen from about a subject. When listening to a lecture or a debate, this type of learning style can be the best at remembering the topic and the issue that is being presented. There is a downside to this style of learning though. If the student is unable to hear what is being taught, they are less likely to retain any of the information presented to them. Since you are required to hear what is being taught and understand, i.e. the audible material, if you can’t hear it you won’t learn anything. Lastly, there is the Tactile/Kinesthetic style of learning. This style of learning is when someone does things hands on. With Kinesthetic learning, you retain information best when you can do it yourself and experience it firsthand. Those that learn this way prefer the hands on approach versus any other method. When the student is able to touch and feel what they are doing, they create a type of muscle memory. In the future when they do the same activity, the movements that they made when learning are refreshed and are able to remember what they did when they were taught. This type of learning is not exclusive to only the hands on approach. These types of learners can also learn by moving around. With the ability for this type of learner to get up and walk around while reading a book or listening to an audio file, it can help them to retain the information. When they have to sit stationary and not use their hands, this can become an issue as the tactile/kinesthetic learner requires this movement to be successful with the material that they are presented with. No matter the style of learning you have, the setting of the environment you are in can play a key factor as well. With the emergence of modern technology and resources available to everyone in today’s world, a new setting has been created. The typical classroom view has been morphed into a new setting, one that is more technologically advanced. You no longer have just the standard classroom or “traditional” setting for someone to learn in, but you have the online classroom. Everyone remembers when he or she was growing up of having to go to school and sit in a classroom. For the most part, all classrooms were the same. They would have a teacher speaking to the class about a specific topic. They would write things out on either a chalkboard, overhead projector, or a dry erase board. The students would sit in some style of a desk, be it a simple table with a chair or something more elaborate in design. Today though there is another option and is becoming more and more popular with today’s busy and fast paced world. The online classroom is one that is becoming more and more popular in today’s faced paced world. This new classroom is becoming a new preferred method for those that The most well know style of classroom, the traditional classroom; you are required to go to a central building such as a school or college. There you would have to sit in an actual room dedicated to enriching the minds of people with fresh new ideas. With the online classroom though, you can “go” to class from the comfort of your own home. You no longer actually have to go to a specific building or school as you did in the past. With either type of classroom setting, they each can have their own benefits when it comes to the style of learning you have. The traditional classroom has its benefits for each style of learning that we have all experienced or witness first hand. For the auditory style, the traditional classroom is the perfect setting for them to learn in. Since you have an actual instructor talking about the material, you have the full auditory experience. With the auditory style, you rely on the information being presented to you in this format. Not only in this setting do you get with the material spoken to you, but the interaction with other students is a benefit as well. Being able to verbally exchange ideas and concepts between peers, you have the ability to expand your thought process and garner even more knowledge. With the interaction you get between the instructor and other peers, the traditional classroom is fertile environment for the auditory learner. For the second style of learning, the visual, the traditional classroom can aid in the student’s ability to learn as well. When in a traditional setting, you can visually see the information being presented to you. As most of us can remember, there was a lot of material that was typically written down by the teacher for the student to take notes. Since visual learners remember by seeing what is being presented to them, they can typically remember what is written or drawn out for them. As they take notes or jot down trigger items, their brain starts to develop a picture in their mind that they are then able to remember this information from (Unknown 2006). Afterwards, visual learners are then able to think back afterwards and visualize what was taught to them to help them remember everything. To help aid in the recollection of their memory, visual learners are also able to think of certain details or see a specific picture or item that can trigger their memory. Once triggered, they are able to bring back all the information that was given. The last style, the tactile/kinesthetic, can have some issues with the traditional setting, but they are still able to learn. Since in a traditional classroom you typically restricted to a seat, and are unable to move around to do things for yourself; this can present a problem. There are some settings though, that does bring about the best for this style of learning. However, there are some benefits to it for them. One such benefit is when it comes to laboratory classes. With a lab, you are doing things for yourself. You are no longer restricted to a chair, and are able to move around and be mobile. When the tactile learner can get up and experiment by him or herself, they learn so much more. In this setting, they can typically excel more than others can. They are able to draw on the movements they did to remember the process of what they accomplished. The online classroom has benefits for each style of learning as well. In an online classroom, the majority of the material is presented in document format or through a PowerPoint presentation. For the auditory style learner, this can be a difficult situation to learn in. They can benefit from one delivery method. Some of the material is presented to the student in either an audio file (Podcast) or video files (You Tube). Since the primary method of learning for an auditory style learner is via sound, then these two types of files are a plus for them. When the student is able to watch a video or listen to an audio file, they get the information via an auditory method. This method can in a way simulate the traditional classroom since the student is forced to listen to the material and are not required to read anything. A second benefit that the online classroom can have is with group discussions or forum postings. Even though the discussions and forums are all a visual, the interaction you get from other students and your teacher helps stimulate the auditory style learner. These involve a lot of interaction with other students and incorporate group activities. This can help simulate a typical classroom environment and the auditory learner is capable of hearing the voices of their other students. A third benefit for the auditory learner is with video conferences. With a video conference, the student is able to see the rest of the students in the class as well as the teacher. As with a traditional classroom, you get the interaction with another person that can stimulate the mind of an auditory learner. Since the video conference is delivered both auditory and visually the student is able to process the information more efficiently. Even though a video conference isn’t an actual face to face interaction, you are still able to get the same benefits from it as if you were in a traditional classroom. Just like in a traditional classroom, the visual learner can really succeed in an online classroom. In an online classroom, a majority of the information is presented to you in a visual format. There are typically only a few audio files that are required to be played. Instead, they are PowerPoint presentations, textbooks, and literature books. One benefit that the visual learner can have in an online classroom is the time. In the traditional classroom, the visual learner can feel rushed and hurried. As a result, they are sometimes unable to take good notes or even detailed notes. With an online classroom, there is no rush on the student. They are able to take their time and take detailed notes that can help them in the future. Not only that, but that are able to make reminders or mark key items for them to remember and focus on. Another benefit for a visual learner is that almost all the material is presented in some type of written format. Since they have nothing but visual items to focus on, written papers and books, they can use the visualization aspect of learning to increase what they learn even more. When the visual learner is able to visualize the information within their mind, they can retain more knowledge of the subject. Not only does the visualization help in them retaining information, but it also gives them the ability to put emphases on key or important items. With the last style of learning, tactile, you would think that it would have a negative impact with online material. This however is not true, and it can in fact be a very positive setting for them. One of the biggest things that a tactile learner likes to do is be able to move around and physically do something. In an online classroom, this can be a possible since you are not restricted to a chair. With the online classroom, you are not constrained to the standards that are put forth in a traditional classroom. Since you are in a location of your choosing, you have more flexibility and freedom. With the online environment, your movement is not restricted and you are free to move around. In a traditional classroom, this is not the case. Having freedom to move around can become a distraction to other students. Instead, since you are in a place of your choosing you can get up and move. You are able to stand up to read the material or walk around. Being able to move your body and not be bound to a chair can help a tactile learner to flourish in an online classroom. One setting that helps the tactile learner in both environments is the lab setting. With online classes, you do not have that many lab scenarios and not all can you do online. However, some are capable of being performed online. As you can see, each style of learning can flourish in both settings. The key to being able to flourish in either setting is being able to find what works best for you. Everybody learns at different paces and with different methods. Each individual needs to find the method that works best for him or her. The only way to do this though, is by trial and error. One thing that both settings do have in common and can either aid or inhibit your learning is the actual environment you are in. Everyone has encountered outside distractions when they were studying or even while they were in class. How many of us can say that we have found ourselves looking out the window during class daydreaming? Many things can either help or hinder how much you learn and how well you learn it. No matter the setting, traditional or online, you need to control the environment around you. With a traditional classroom, everything is pretty much set out for you to help maximize the majority of people’s learning abilities. They are set up in a way to minimize distractions and have the most visibility to see the teacher. In a traditional classroom, one thing it has that can be hard to compare with an online classroom is silence. In a traditional classroom, the room is usually very quiet and can really help someone to focus on what is being taught or when he or she is studying. This does not ring true for everyone though, some people actually can study better when there is noise in the background such as a T.V., the radio, or even just white noise. In such a case, the online environment can be the best since the student has control of the environment and the background noises (Conner 2007). The key though, is to find what works best for you, the student. As you have read, everyone has his or her own specific way of learning. Just because one way may work perfectly for someone, does not mean the same will work for you. The key to creating a successful learning environment is finding the things that can aid you when studying. The same can be said for things that would distract you or inhibit your learning ability. You have to identify the things that can do this, and remove them from the environment you are in. If the location you choose is in an area that has things moving around and causes you to focus, then this is not the best setting for you to try to learn in. With both the online and traditional classroom, you have to ability to control or manipulate things within your environment to maximize your potential. In the end, how the environment plays a role in how we learn and study can have a major impact on how successful we are. Not all two people are alike, and not everything will work for both people. The way to thrive when it comes to learning something is to find what works for you. Be it a traditional classroom setting or an online one, they both have an impact on the way we learn. The fundamental concept though is that no matter the setting, you need to identify your style or styles, choose the setting that is best for you, and take appropriate steps to reduce distractions and inhibitors. This will then create an environment that will allow anyone to succeed in all that they do. No conclusive results have come about saying which student achieves a higher GPA or is more successful with their profession, the online student or the traditional student. Will we ever really know? Possibly, not, but as the student it is up to you to decide what works best for you.

...Learning is an essential part of everyday life both in academic and professional situations. The skill of knowing how to learn is important for every student, individual and worker. The main purpose of this essay is discuss how theories and concepts about individual learning and how it can be useful for employees and managers who wish to improve learning in an organisation. Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour, cognition or affect that occurs as a result of one’s interaction with the environment (DeSimone, Werner, & Harris, 2002, p. 75). Learning is defined as the process whereby knowledge is created, acquired, transformed, converted, or utilized in a different context from its origin (Yang, 2003, p.117). Knowledge on the other hand consists of three indivisible facets, Explicit, Implicit and Emancipatory (Yang, 2003, p.108).Explicit knowledge refers to that of mind apprehension, Implicit relates to the body, more of a personal context and Emancipatory knowledge which relates to emotion and affection. According to Yang (2003, p. 108), we learn not only through mental correspondence but also by direct personal involvement. In order for individuals to learn, there are a number of learning styles that a person has that differ from another. According to Lu et al. (2007, p.188), learning styles are categorised in four stages cycle which are concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. These stages are developed...

...literature for this study focuses on procedures used to identify teaching and learning styles and what effect a match between the two has on student learning outcomes and evaluation of instructors. The review focuses on a number of different instruments used to identify teaching and learning styles. The chapter begins with a definition of learning styles, teaching styles, and matching, followed by the findings of researchers using various instruments to measure learning and teaching styles. The research outcomes germane to learning styles, teaching styles, and a match between the two in relation to course grades, final exam scores, and instructor evaluations are discussed. Learning and Teaching Styles Many researchers have proclaimed the significance of identifying preferred teaching styles and preferred learning styles. Claxton and Ralston (1978, in Miller, 1982) alluded to this significance: The research findings on learning styles offer substantial promise to teachers, counselors, and the students themselves in terms of finding better ways for students to learn. But while matching learning style with instructional mode apparently facilitates positive interpersonal relations, and while it would seem to point the way for increased learning, the empirical data that support this idea are rather scarce. Such a significant gap in the research must be filled if knowledge about learning styles is to become a significant force in improving college and university teaching...

...LEARNING STYLES Students preferentially take in and process information in different ways: by seeing and hearing, reflecting and acting, reasoning logically and intuitively, analyzing and visualizing, steadily and in fits and starts. Teaching methods also vary. Some instructors lecture, others demonstrate or lead students to self-discovery; some focus on principles and others on applications; some emphasize memory and others understanding. When mismatches exist between learning styles of most students in a class and the teaching style of the professor, the students may become bored and inattentive in class, do poorly on tests, get discouraged about the courses, the curriculum, and themselves, and in some cases change to other curricula or drop out of school. Professors, confronted by low test grades, unresponsive or hostile classes, poor attendance and dropouts, know something is not working. They may become overly critical of their students (making things even worse) or begin to wonder if they are in the right profession. Most seriously, society loses potentially excellent professionals. To overcome these problems, professors should strive for a balance of instructional methods (as opposed to trying to teach each student exclusively according to his or her preferences.) If the balance is achieved, all students will be taught partly in a manner they prefer, which leads to an increased comfort level and willingness to learn, and partly in a less preferred manner, which provides...

...Investigation into My Learning Style Ben Thiel COLL100 American Military University Professor Corey Tutor Investigation into My Learning Style Throughout life the term “learning style” is used, each individual has a different assumption of the definition mostly the individual takes on a personal stance and states, “I’m an auditory learner, if you say it once I will remember,” whereas others refer to themselves as most commonly visual or kinesthetic students. However, for one to limit themselves to possessing one type of learning style is quite a limitation. I have always considered my learning style to be predominately visual learner. According to Felder & Soloman, (n.d.) there are multiple learning styles aside from the traditional visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Felder & Soloman (n.d) present eight different learning styles which include; active, reflective, sensing, intuitive, visual, verbal, sequential, and global. Although these styles tend to pull from the traditional three; their definitions give more depth to the characteristics associated with one’s preferred learning style. Felder & Soloman developed a personal questionnaire which allows an individual to answer a series of forty-four questions. Results are given to the individual based on their responses; the scales range from one to eleven in one direction or the other these values compare two learning styles. The numerical value represents the individual’s preference for one learning style verse the opposing...

Learning styles vary for each individual. The VARK model, designed by Neil Fleming, is a guide that focuses on 4 different learning styles, Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. Students who utilize the VARK model, to focus on preferred learning styles may increase their educational experience, and satisfaction with the learning process. This paper will focus on the preferred learning styles, strategies, and changes to current learning styles, of the author, after taking the VARK questionnaire. ...My Learning Style Lindsay Cavalier Hodges University HSA3145 Peter Van Leeuwan September 15th, 2013 Abstract We now know everyone has a different learning style. I do not believe all people have one type of learning style though. I believe as a company, all employees can benefit from a custom multimodal training. Each intake aspect from the individual learning styles can be tied into one another, for even better employee training! My Learning Style What is my learning style? I was happy to take part in this questionnaire, as I find it very accurate. According to the Vark questionnaire, I enjoyed the results page due to the emphasis on words and lists. I always assumed I was a hands-on and visual-type learner. According to the assigned text book’s six cognitive domains or levels of learning, I tend to skip to the fourth step of analysis. Within my own job, I am constantly analyzing how I can personally complete a task as efficiently and accurately as possible. In my line of work, the more efficiently you can complete a task, the fast the provider’s receive their revenue. The best strategies I can use would be utilizing lists for organizational purposes. I would prioritize them from highest to low priority, taking any anxiety stressors away from the work at hand. For an organization to properly train employees with different learning styles, they will need to analyze each learning style and pull the best qualities from each. I would pull two to three...

...All people have a different learning style such as visual, auditory or kinesthetic, but everyone has a dominant one. When a person is learning he or she uses the learning style that is suitable for them. There is a tool called VARK- A guide to learning by Neil D. Fleming that can determine which learning style each person prefers. According to the VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) system questionnaire I scored Visual: 9, Aural: 3, Read/Write: 7 and Kinesthetic 9 and was considered a multimodal learner which is someone who has multiple preferences. As stated in the VARK learning styles 60% of the population fits this category. The learning style I prefer is kinesthetic. Throughout my career in military law enforcement I was able to learn many different ways, but I learned faster and retained more for a longer period of time if I can see what I am doing and having the hands on approach. I believe being able to do it yourself or having the chance to be more hands on with the problem can help the person get a far better understanding. My other preferred style is Visual. This style will benefit me because it helps me to have a visual of what I need in order to understand. Andragogy is a model of adult learning and education developed by Malcolm Knowles. ...LEARNING, LEARNING STYLES AND PERSPECTIVE Date: 14/12/2012 Author: Darren Brown Learning Style From the article by Kolb and Kolb (2005) on learning styles, it clearly shows that the personality that we have defines the learning style that we adopt as an individual and is termed Constructivism in learning. I have found I do prefer the processing approach continuum that translates into the “doing” action as opposed to the watching. On the perception continuum I fall under the Concrete experience or “feeling” realm and not the “thinking “or abstract conceptualization. This leads onto to the further definition of an “accommodating” learning style but I also had a lot of consensus with the “diverging “learning aspect. Initially this was a bit of a conundrum for me as where did I actually fall as it seemed a clear cut theory. However when reading Kolb and Kolb 2005 and referring to the work of Abbey et all 1985 and Hunt 1987 it showed that there are indeed further actual combinations that can be found and in this aspect I would fall under the “Northerner “. It is also interesting to note this is the only synthesis of the learning behaviour that does not include the AC aspect at all. It seems nobody can posses all the different aspects as that is what makes us human beings and different to each other. There as been some criticism of the Kolb model in that it is quite Western culturally based and it does not take into account cultural differences or experiences as described...
