LEARNING TEAM CHARTER – TEAM “A”

|Course Title |GEN/195 FOUNDATIONS OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES

2 Team Ground Rules and Guidelines
What are the general expectations for all members of the team?

To at least acknowledge one another and respond even if it is ‘OK’. We understand how chaotic life, work school, etc. can be but what we all must remember is we decided to attend college (again). Keeping that in mind, contact with one another is a must also. We know we all are pretty much acquaintance and it might be a little difficult to do but to build a great team we need to start a foundation. When it comes to turning in assignments as a team we think it will benefit everyone if we summit to our thread at least a day in advance so one of the other team member (or leader of the week) can put together a draft for all of us to turn in or just decide what name gets what question. We’ve never been much of a team player but this is a learning experience for me and probably other students. We should all remember that we have our team depending on us to pull our weight and make the right choices.

4 Expectations for Time Management and Involvement

(Participation, communication with the team, accessibility, etc.)

Each individual person should be required to post a general update once during the week in order to keep communication strong. In addition, everyone is to have the same amount of participation in each group assignment. Furthermore, if a team member does not post anything during the week, other members should reach out, to ensure all team work is completed. Contact information should be kept up to date so every member stays accessible. All contribution to assignments should be posted two days in advance of the due date to be sure everything is completed on time. To better manage our time, each member should be take on a specific portion of an assignment and let the group know. This allows everyone to contribute to the assignment and avoids any particular member having to invest an excess amount of time. We believe these expectations will allow us to be more successful as a team.

Ensuring Fair and Even Contribution and Collaboration
What strategy will you use to ensure that all team members are contributing and collaborating appropriately? Describe the communication strategy you will use if a team member is not contributing and collaborating effectively. How will the team manage conflicts between team members?

So far Team A has been fortunate to not experience conflict with one another, but if we did we feel the best way to handle the situation is to let the individuals know that we are all adults and in college, we need to strive for a team best not our selfish wants. Team A peers has had to make a group meeting because we are struggling with “Team Players” but we feel that woke some of us up to ensure we want to pull our own weight. If we do come across some of my team members that are not contributing we feel we will need to send a message to see if everything is OK and to try and encourage them to summit something so the team does not feel like they have to pick up the slack and confront that individual.

5 Special Considerations

What do you, as a team, agree will make this team experience different from past team experiences?

From past experience, it could be said that communication is key while working with a group to complete assignments. Part of this is keeping up to date with every team member. Ensuring each member posts some sort of status will help keep everyone on the same page and avoid complications. We agree as a team that in order to make this experience better, we should schedule a meeting at the beginning of each week to plan out how we will complete the assignment. As long as we attempt to collaborate with one another and respect our differences Team A will be successful. Expressing diversity and accepting diversity will be our stronghold. This includes keeping in open mind to everyone’s opinions, and making decisions as a team rather than individuals. All in all, we as a team agree that keeping open communication and avoiding conflict will make this a better experience than our teams in the past.

...Learning team paper PSY/300 1) what are the teams ground rules and guidelines: my expectation for the team members is to first respect, each other we are adults, and be kind to one another nobody knows what the other person is going through, is that having a rough week or if they have a special child, try to communicate as soon as you get text from any of the team members, is by communication that you can show that you are here pulling your weight and nobody has to worry about doing anybody else’s work. 2) Expectation for time management and involvement: I would think that it will go without saying that each and every person, on our team contributes they share of the work that’s is to be done, and for it to be on time so at least one person can review it, edit it, and then produce the final copy, and I would also think that if we ever need to have face-to-face everybody in the team will be available at the same time or would try make an effort at least. 3) Ensuring fair and even contribution and collaboration what strategy will you use to ensure that all team members are contributing and collaborating promptly? Team Learning Week 3

...During this second week of class, Learning Team B learned about the importance and understanding of work teams. If anyone has worked in corporate America, teams are likely to be incorporated into that organizational culture. For example, Aflac has several teams based on divisions and departments. Most employees within a team report directly to a supervisor, a manager, or a senior manager and those senior managers report to individuals that makeup the executive team. We can easily relate to teams at work and at most schools, like the University of Phoenix, which helps to mold how we interact with others that may have different opinions or views. It is up to us to learn how to function within a team to reach a common goal which could be an important project, presentation or a report. This week’s objectives also discusses the four types of teams which are: problem-solving teams, self-managed work teams, cross-functional teams and virtual teams (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Regardless of which type of team we are working on some common factors are ensuring the team operates effectively, and having a certain level of trust is a good place to start. In regards to developing effective teams, Adam again referenced his military experience. He was put in charge of small groups as early as 19 years old in a combat environment and was expected to bring them together. He drew from the methods of his superiors and built cohesion through tough training and through leading by example...

Learning Team #28 Case Analysis

...1. There were many factors led to the eventual disintegration of Learning team #28. It was apparent that there was a growing dissatisfaction amongst members stemming from poor communication, disproportionate involvement in team tasks, and an evident lack of supportive leadership. Three major factors have been identified for discussion: the absence of the team’s constitution or a charter that clearly defined the team’s goals and processes, inadequate knowledge and skills amongst team members to drive the team’s performance, and absence of positive team culture and values. We explore each of these factors below and analyze how they contributed to the issues in the case. One fundamental misstep that resulted in the progression of issues in LT#28 was the lack of clearly defined standards for both the team and the individuals. With this oversight they failed to address several key components, including: individual and collective performance goals, identifying the roles of each member within the team, and establishing a set of procedures to ensure achievement of the desired results. This crucial organizational step was overlooked. During their first meetings, the team seemed to be enthralled with each other on a personal level and coincidentally made the common misconception that good personal relationships would translate into a solid team structure. The team bypassed the planning process and jumped directly into coursework. When the work started to pile up and pressure fell...

Speeding Up Team Learning

...Speeding up team learning Cardiac surgery is one of medicine’s modern miracles. In an operating room no larger than many household kitchens, a patient is rendered functionally dead—the heart no longer beating, the lungs no longer breathing—while a surgical team repairs or replaces damaged arteries or valves. A week later, the patient walks out of the hospital. The miracle is a testament to medical technology—but also to incredible teamwork. A cardiac surgical team includes an array of specialists who need to work in close cooperation for the operation to succeed. A single error, miscommunication, or slow response can have disastrous consequences. In other words, surgical teams are not all that different from the cross-functional teams that in recent years have become crucial to business success. We studied how surgical teams at 16 major medical centers implemented a difficult new procedure for performing cardiac surgery. What we found sheds light on one of the key determinants of team performance: a team’s ability to adapt to a new way of working. In corporate settings, teams frequently have to learn new technologies or processes that are designed to improve performance. Often, however, things get worse—sometimes for a long time—before they get better. Team members may find it hard to break out of deeply ingrained routines. Or they may struggle to adjust to new roles and communication requirements. When a product development team adopts computer-aided design tools, for...

Layoffs and downsizing are never an easy topic to tackle. How does a manager deliver this type of bad news in the most professional way? The issue that was presented in the article “Mismanaged layoffs can go horribly wrong” was companies and their management teams are not able to layoff or terminate an employee or employees in the appropriate way. The author of the article feels as management is not able to handle these types of situations in a professional manner. Members of management often have great people skills, which are either something they were born with, or something they have learned throughout their lifetime, but when faced with the challenging situation of letting an employee go they are unable to say the right things. With proper training of these tough situations, managers will be able to handle these types of situations in a more professional manner. Managers need to be able to put themselves in the employee’s shoes and speak to the employee as if they were on the other side of the conversation. Mangers should also explore every option within the company before taking the action to layoff or terminate an employee. Documentation...

Leading People and Teams - Some Key Learnings

...Learnings on Leading People and Teams In this course, I have learned some key elements that are fundamental when dealing with people in a company – and also at home. In the first session, I realized that sometimes people hear to other people say, but they do not listen. Although this may seem obvious, we don’t realize this much, and it is more common than it seems. In the first session I also learnt about the importance (and the dangers) of making assumptions. In the video presented, the boss asked about bringing a new colleague to work with the main character in a political campaign. The main character made assumptions that plain wrong. He was willing to leave his job because he thought that his boss didn’t want him, and felt even threatened by the arrival of a new colleague, when, in fact, his boss really wanted to know his opinion. In the RESAF case, my main learning was before giving someone negative feedback, it’s fundamental to weight in the pros and cons of the outcome of the feedback, and its respective probabilities of happening. For example, if you believe that the person receiving the feedback is highly unlikely to respond negatively to it, maybe it’s better to not even give the feedback. Also, I learned that, when you open your mouth, you lose control – i.e., when you start giving feedback, you can control what you say but not the way the person will perceive it. So, even if you are very polite and “delicate”, the way the other will understand the feedback...
