Fra 2001 til 2011, har antallet af fattige børn steget næsten tredoblet. I 2001 var der 4500 fattige børn, og i 2011 var der 12.000 fattige børn. Det er sket en stigning på 7500 fattige børn i Danmark. Fleste fattige børn lever kun med en mor eller en far, i deres hjem. Fra 2001 til 2011 er antallet af fattige børn som kun bor sammen med enten enlig mor eller far steget 3,7 % gange så meget per år. Og de børn som bor sammen med både far og mor, er steget med 2,4 %. Der er stor forskel på hvor de fattige børn bor henne i landet. Der hvor der er størst stigning med fattige børn, ses i bl.a København og Østjylland. I København er der omkring 2000 fattige børn og 8250 Etårs-Fattige børn 8250. I Østjylland er der 1590 fattige børn og 6480 et årsfattigbørn.

Mange af de fattige børns uddannelse afhænger af deres forældre, for hvis nu at ens mor ikke blev uddannet, er der en meget stor chance for at barnet heller ikke bliver uddannet. Hvis barnet ikke kan blive uddannet eller komme i gang med en uddannelse, kan de også ende som fattig når de bliver voksen. Fleste fattige børn bliver oftest udsat for både fysisk og psykisk mobning i skolen. Børnenes dårlige trivsel i skolen eller hjemmet, er med til at skabe en negativ spiral: Når børnene ikke trives særlig godt, i deres skoleforløb vil det oftest blive dårligt, hvilket bliver en hindring for, at børnene får en uddannelse senere i livet. Det betyder, at de som voksne fortsat må leve et liv på økonomisk lavblus. Mange af de fattige børn har ikke råd til at gå til en fritids aktivitet. Så børnene kommer til at leve i en social isolation. Mange fattige børn kan heller ikke komme af sted på ferie, fordi økonomien ikke er i orden. Fleste fattigbørn, kan heller ikke komme med til en børnefødselsdag, ved f.eks. en fra deres klasse, fordi de ikke har råd til at tage en gave med. Nogen børn kan også ende med at have mug på deres mad, og de bliver de mobbet for.
Ifølge den anbefalede fattigdomsgrænse er der 42.200 danskere i fattigdom i 2010. 10.700 af dem er børn som er under 18 år.

Habituation theory holds that when an animal is repeatedly exposed to stimuli that neither hurts nor helps, it stops responding.
