...Laccetti (professor of humanities at Stevens Institute of Technology) and Molski, in their essay entitled The Lost Art of Writing,[12][13] are critical of the terms, predicting reduced chances of employment for students who use such slang, stating that, "Unfortunately for these students, their bosses will not be 'lol' when they read a report that lacks proper punctuation and grammar, has numerous misspellings, various made-up words, and silly acronyms." Fondiller and Nerone[14] in their style manual assert that "professional or business communication should never be careless or poorly constructed" whether one is writing an electronic mail message or an article for publication, and warn against the use of smileys and these abbreviations, stating that they are "no more than e-mail slang and have no place in business communication". Yunker and Barry[15] in a study of online courses and how they can be improved through podcasting have found that these slang terms, and emoticons as well, are "often misunderstood" by students and are "difficult to decipher" unless their meanings are explained in advance. They single out the example of "ROFL" as not obviously being the abbreviation of "rolling on the floor laughing" (emphasis added). Haig[1] singles out LOL as one of the three most popular initialisms in Internet slang, alongside BFN ("bye for now") and IMHO ("in my honest/humble opinion"). He describes the various initialisms of Internet slang as convenient, but warns that "as ever...

...Treatment of Insomnia: An Alternative Approach Anoja S. Attele, DDS, Jing-Tian Xie, MD, and Chun-Su Yuan, MD, PhD Abstract Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, and is often associated with significant medical, psychological, and social disturbances. Conventional medical treatment for insomnia includes psychological and pharmacological approaches; however, long-term use of frequently prescribed medications can lead to habituation and problematic withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, herbal and other natural sleep aids are gaining popularity, as herbs commonly used for their sedative-hypnotic effects do not have the drawbacks of conventional drugs. Whether alternative therapies possess activity similar to conventional therapies needs further evaluation. (Altern Med Rev 2000;5(3):249-259) Introduction Humans sleep approximately one-third of their lives. Scientists do not fully understand the necessity for sleep, nor the mechanisms for sleep’s physical and mental restoration. Sleep disruption creates fatigue and suboptimal performance, causing significant medical, psychological, and social disturbances.1,2 Insomnia is a widespread health complaint, and the most common of all sleep disorders.3 In the United States, the cost of insomnia, including treatment, lost productivity, and insomnia-related accidents may exceed $100 billion per year.4,5 Insomnia can be defined as the subjective complaint of impairment in the duration, depth, or restful quality of sleep. It is characterized...

...History of Policing Thomas J. Bowers Texas A&M University Central Texas Abstract The history of police has come a long way. America has police standards and traditions based on the Sir Robert Peel’s British police. There is plenty of history in the American police and the evolution of the system, but first we must know how even the British Police came about. The Anglo-Saxons is where policing started. It was the people who were doing these jobs. The People in the area were given names or titles like tythings, or group of ten and they were responsible for policing their community. There was ten tythings in a hundred-man group who would fall under the Shire-reeve, or Sheriff of the land area or county. with a tything-man as representative of each; and into larger groups, each of ten tythings, under a “hundred-man” who was responsible to the Shire-reeve, or Sheriff, of the County. As time went on the tything man became the Constable, or Come-stable, and the Sheriff would be the Justice of Peace. The constables would have paid able men to walk the streets and keep the area safe. These men would be called the Watch. In the eighteenth century times changed and this system began to fail. After many years and studies of the accomplishments and fails of the system, Sir Robert Peel pushed for police department to be formed. In 1829 the Metropolitan Police Act was agreed and the Metropolitan Police was recognized. The complete formation and unity came in 1839 when...

...NT1430 12/15/13 Chapter 1 #1, 4 1. Free software is software that users have the freedom to distribute and change. The three main characteristics of free software are: The source code has to be distributed with the program, users must be allowed to redistribute modified versions under the same terms/licensing, and you can not restrict people from redistributing/modifying/using the software. 4. GNU stands for "GNU'S Not Unix", and it was designed to be a UNIX-like operating system developed by Richard Stallman. Linux is the name of operating system kernel developed by Linus Torvalds. GNU's tools aside the Linux kernel make the operating system known as “Linux” aka “GNU/Linux”. Thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of people helped refine the operating system because it was distributed freely online. Chapter 2 # 1 1. Installing Fedora/RHEL uses the process of copying operating system files from a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive to the hard disk on a system and setting up configuration files so Linux runs properly on the hardware. Several types of installations are possible including fresh installations, upgrades from older releases of Fedora, and dual-boot. Chapter 3 #1, 4, 8 1. A live system gives you a chance to preview Fedora without installing it. It does not write/install to hard disks. 4. Put /boot at the beginning of the drive (partition 1) so that there is no issue of Linux having to boot from a partition too far into the drive. 8. When the system...

...of the title characters from childhood to adulthood. Many commentators have examined the nature of Romeo and Juliet's love for one another, concentrating on its brevity and the extent to which it was lustful. Ronald B. Bond states that Romeo's love for Juliet is ocular and is based only on satisfying his senses. Bond claims that even in death their love is "devoted to the flesh" and that the play is about "the intensity of youthful love." However, Marjorie Kolb Cox distinguishes between the Nurse's interpretation of the romance in terms of lust and Juliet's stress on abiding love, maintaining that Romeo and Juliet's love does not fit the Elizabethan Courtly Love model because it is realistic, normal, and attainable. Conversely, Leonora Leet Brodwin develops the argument that Shakespeare did indeed create a Courtly Love Tragedy. Critics have also questioned whether the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues can be considered the primary cause of the disasters that befall the young couple. Many scholars have suggested that the feud is not the cause of...

...‘What is the importance of this section in the whole of The Miller’s prologue and tale?’ This section of the story is crucial for later development of the story and how it concludes. Chaucer, through the narrator of the Miller, describes the character of Absolon proleptically (achieved through language and imagery) and these certain - rather outlandish - qualities also have a part to play later making the tale humorous. However, the description of the character is not significant in the prologue since Absolon is not mentioned explicitly; and reduces the overall importance of Absolon in ‘The Miller’s Tale.’ There are two possible reasons why Absolon was not mentioned in the prologue but both intentional by Chaucer. The Miller does not include Absolon before he telling his story in the prologue. This can be explained in two ways; both very important (especially the first) because it reveals not only the character of the Miller (who is used as a mouthpiece) but of Chaucer’s devices for making this play more realistic. One reason why the Miller omits mention of this character is Chaucer’s use to increase the realism of the tale. The Miller is known to be a man who ‘was of brawn’ and had ‘a werte’ which sprouted ‘a toft of heris’; he later describes Absolon who was ‘smal’ and ‘clippe and shave’. Chaucer makes this a strong contrast. Perhaps it is natural for the Miller not to talk about Absolon: he is not worth mentioning since he is not manly enough. The other reason, this one...

INTORDUCTION Structural members subjected to a system of stationary loads are easily to analysis and determine completely the maximum design loads, deflection and rotation at supports of the member. However, in some members, such as bridge girders and crane gantry, which are subjected to moving loads, it is not easy to analyse since the maximum design loads and deflections depends on the position of the applied load(s) with time. An analytical procedure which deals specifically with the determination of the location of the moving load that will produce the design loads of the highest magnitude in the members was reached by using influence lines. Influence line can be defined as a graphical representation of the variation of internal member force or deflection in a fixed member section due to a unit load moving along or traversing a member of a given structural. It may also be defined as a response function of support...
