Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome: overview and treatments There are several different types of epilepsy. They range in levels of curableness as well as menace. Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) is one of the most interesting types of epilepsy, because no one knows much about it. Many different types of doctors have tried different treatments. Within my research I have found several facts about LGS and some treatments that have been tried. LGS can begin in childhood, characterized by development delay or mental retardation, slow spike and wave discharges in the EEG, electroencephalogram. (Devinsk) LGS typically starts at the age of one, but it can start earlier. Some signs of LGS in a 6 month would include: they would stop their baby talk, lose…show more content… When these seizures start, they are sudden and without warning. (Freeman, Pillas and Vining) They can last from 10 seconds to 20 seconds, but they usually never go past 20 seconds. (Devinsk) When the seizure ends, the patient does not know what happed. Generally they continue doing what they were doing before they had a seizure. In the diet you can only contain 75 to 100 calories for every 2.2 pounds of the body weight. You can take in 1 to 2 grams of protein for 2.2 pounds of the body weight. The type of foods that a patient will mainly eat are butter, heavy whipping cream, mayonnaise and cooking oils. The only way to start this diet is in the hospital. If they decide to put a patient on this diet, they have to fast for 12 hours. Then they slowly increase their calorie intake. When this is happening they have to monitor the patient to make sure this process does not cause any seizures. This diet can reduce 50% of the seizures in children and some children 10-15 % become seizure free. (Sirven and
