More current examples of neglect is Leonard Peltier, and the mascot controversy. Leonard Peltier is an American Indian activist from the American Indian Movement (AIM), who was wrongfully jailed for the murder of two FBI agents. Prior to the incident 60 American Indians were killed on the Pine Ridge reservation, allegedly by paramilitary squads connect to the tribal government, without any justice. Relationship with the Native American activist group were strained, with accusation that the FBI did nothing to protect the reservations. The incident occurred when two agents entered the reservation with an arrest warrant, when an exchange of gun fire took place. The agents were killed at point-blank range, and soon the authorities arrested two …show more content…
Although Leonard telex message was different than the gun used, the government dismissed it saying that he had “aided and abetted” the killings even if he didn’t pull the trigger. Leonard is now 70, and has held a parole hearings, but could never get parole because he never accepted responsibility ("Leonard Peltier"). Bill Clinton had the opportunity to pardon him, but didn't, even though he had the most pardons when leaving office. The recent mascot controversy has spark in the media recently. The offensive names and caricatures are not illegal, but are very disrespect to American Indian. It is seen as mocking them and profiting off their heritage negatively. The “Redskin” name is offensive as it is seen as somewhat of a racist slur (Waldron). The caricatures that the Cleveland Indians, and Atlanta Braves use, paint Natives in a negative light (ICTMN). Many fans come to the games in war gear and sacred headdresses, pretending to act like savages. These teams are perpetuating stereotypes and not honoring them in anyway.
