Let1 Task 1
The expectancy theory of motivation is consisted of three parts: Expectancy (Effort-Performance), Instrumentality (Performance-Reward) and Valance (Rewards-Personal Goals). This theory is based on the argument that a person will be more motivated to do a better job if they believe that those efforts will result in a higher performance and they will receive better rewards for the work they do.
Part A
Expectancy (Effort-Performance)
The first part of this theory is expectancy where this focuses on the effort-performance relationship. This perception is that an employee will think about how much effort they should put into a project or work and if that effort is going to result in them gaining that performance. An example of this is thinking is if I put more effort into my work does that mean I will out-perform my coworkers?
Instrumentality (Performance-Reward)
The second part of the theory is Instrumentality, where this focuses on the performance-reward relationship. Now what this relationship and thinking is what is the likelihood that if I achieve the performance level that the result will end in a reward. Now again an example of this is for all the effort that I put forth am I going to be rewarded for it or will it go by the wayside and the rewards will go based on how long someone has been there and not how much effort they put into their work.

Valance (Reward-Personal Goals)
The last part of this theory is Valance where the focus on the value the individual will associate with the outcome (rewards) of their actions. What this is based on is does the rewards match how much effort should be given or does it not matter how much effort is given since the reward will still be the same. Now this theory doesn’t even always have to do with work an example of this is “How much do I really want that A or should I just slack off?”
Part B

...Expectancy Theory is a widely excepted explanation of motivate in which it is believed that there are three main elements of relationships. Effort-performance relationship (Expectancy) which is the perceived probability by the individual that exerting a given amount of effort will lead to performance. An example, if I give my maximum effort I will be recognized in my performance review. Performance-reward relationship (Instrumentally) in which the degree to which the individual believes that performance at a particular level will lead to a desired income. An example of this would be if one gets a good performance review they will get organizational rewards. And Rewards-personal goals relationship (Valence) in which the degree of organizational rewards satisfy an individual’s personal goal or needs and the attractiveness of those potential rewards for the individual. Here, one would ask that if rewarded, are the rewards ones I find attractive? In the given scenario I would apply the three expectancy theories to satisfy the employees and boost motivation, quality and performance. I would start with training. Some employees under Supervisor A believe they cannot be successful because it requires more dexterity than they believe they are capable of. With enough training and hands on experience these employees that are having difficulty achieving their goals will feel more comfortable with the new process and will work harder because they have confidence in themselves that it really...

Finding Inner Peace

...love yourself 100%. Though this sounds easy, its not when you have a society that has made an image of what they consider a perfect male or perfect female. God has made every human on this earth have distintive features. And in his eyes they are all beautiful. If you are one who deals with self esteam issues, every morning look yourself in the mirror and say God does not make mistakes. Our first and last love is self love. The second step is accept what it is. There is only so much that we have control over. If we are presented with a situation that we can not change or affect then just let it be. "It is what it is" is something i like to say. For example say your going to be late for work becasue there is traffic and there is only one route to your job, instead of getting stressed out about being late for work understand that you can not physically pick up the cars and move them so just let it be. Obviously there is nothing you can do about traffic so don't think about it just wake up alittle earlier the next day. If you practice this on small situations, as big obstacles come in your life you will have a stressless approuch to alot of things. Finally never lose hope. Hope is what gives you a path to peacefulness. If you get to a bump in the road, feel in your heart that everything will be ok. Struggle is always only temporary. Knowing that whatever your going through will be over soon lifts all the negative energy off of you. There...

Unit 2 Activity 1

...1. What are Jim’s options? a. In this situation, Jim has a couple of options before him. He could request the meeting be postponed due to the absence of his partner, without whom he cannot complete the presentation. He also could let it be known that he saw Sara at the gas station on his way to work this morning and discredit her. Another option would be for Jim to pick up the slack and put together a presentation with the material he has. 2. What does he actually know and what does he think he knows? Does it matter? b. Jim knows that Sara called out sick and that he does not have her slides for the presentation. He also knows that he is to give a big presentation to the CEO today. He thinks he knows that she isn’t actually sick, but rather skipping the presentation. This matters only if Jim lets it distract him from the task at hand. 3. How could he apply the character qualities you’ve learned about so far (persistence, enthusiasm, optimism, and self-control) in this situation? c. Jim could be persistent and enthusiastic by putting together a presentation with the time he has so that the meeting will not have to be rescheduled. In doing so, having optimism, perhaps the CEO will see that Jim had pulled off the presentation even with his coworker being absent, which could potentially lead to a promotion. Jim needs to show self-control in that he should not mention seeing someone who looked like Sara at the gas station. That information is irrelevant...

My Personal Leadership Philosophy

...MY PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY “To Lead with STRENGTH” My ultimate purpose in writing this is to share to everyone my personal leadership philosophy – what I believe to be important as we go on with the service. I believe that in imparting this set of guidance, you will come to understand who I am, what rules I live and work by, what you can expect from me and what I expect from you, and how I will evaluate your performance. In view hereof, I hope you will learn to trust my actions and know where I am heading. As I round up my values in life, I found out that the foundation of all my feats as I go up the ladder of my career is my STRENGTH. It always gives me the direction; it serves as my compass. The STRENGTH that I’m referring to here is neither physical nor psychological, but rather the energy to organize myself to effectively and efficiently perform my tasks, and the power to unite all of us so that we are able to attain the Army’s Vision of becoming “a professional, capable and responsive Army that is a source of National Pride.” And being your leader, it is my primary duty to impart this STRENGTH so that each of us here will have a moral compass to guide us through the maze of intellectual, philosophical and emotional issues that encompass our lives and the Army. STRENGTH outlines my character and translates to: Selfless service, Trust, Respect, Empowerment, Nobleness, God, Teamwork, and Humility. Selfless Service: When I speak about selfless service, it...

Inaugural Speech of Obama

...Obama Inaugural Address  20th January 2009 My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics...

There weren’t taken seriously because they didn’t make it known that they were just as important. I think the team would have reconsidered their position if Mark and Betty would have stood firm. My Birthday Slip

...My Birthday Slip This was my seventeenth birthday and I couldn’t wait for it, although I was going to be in school for it. I was looking forward to all of the birthday wishes, hugs, and gifts. It always happened that way every year, so I shouldn’t have been that much excited; I guess it was because I was turning a year older. The morning of my birthday, I had gotten up and picked out my birthday outfit. I picked skinny leg khaki pants, a white collared aeropostle, shirt, and brown baby doll shoes. To let it be known that it was my birthday, I added a pink birthday stash that read “Birthday Queen” and a pink and silver crown. I made my hair so pretty, with little tight curls and even did my makeup a little. I like to go all out, so of course I had a brand new brown and cheetah print backpack that was similar to my brown baby doll shoes. I was ready to go. By time I made it to my bus stop down the street from my house, I had already received 3 different sets of balloons and a couple of gifts. The whole ride to school I got phone calls and text messages, so I was beyond happy! All of my balloons were in the aisle and in everyone’s way so it was also a difficult ride to school. Still, I didn’t care because it was my birthday. I couldn’t wait to get to school for two reasons: first, to get off the bus with all of my balloons because I started to get a bit annoyed with them and second, to get more birthday wishes, gifts, and attention. Finally, I had made it to school. I was...

John Brown - Notes on Final Address

...John Brown’s Address John Brown Primary Sources Lesson To the Virginia Court, when about to receive the sentence of death for his heroic attempt at Harper’s Ferry, to give deliverance to the captives, and to let the oppressed go free. [Mr. Brown, upon inquiry whether he had anything to say why sentence should not be pronounced upon him, in a clear, distinct voice replied:] I have, may it please the Court, a few words to say. In the first place, I deny everything but what I have already admitted, of a design on my part to free slaves. I intended, certainly, to have made a clean thing of that matter, as I did last winter when I went into Missouri, and there took Slaves without the snapping of a gun on either side, moving them through the country, and finally leaving them in Canada. I designed to have done the same thing again on a larger scale. That was all I intended. I never did intend murder, or treason, or the destruction of property, or to excite or incite Slaves to rebellion, or to make insurrection. I have another objection, and that is that it is unjust that I should suffer such a penalty. Had I interfered in the manner, and which I admit has been fairly proved, -- for I admire the truthfulness and candor of the greater portion of the witnesses who have testified in this case --had I so interfered in behalf of the Rich, the Powerful, the Intelligent, the so-called Great, or in behalf of any of their friends, either father, mother, brother, sister...

Let America Be America

...quotes of a protested poem, how America isn’t what it used to be. Everything will revolve around a poem called “Let America be America Again”`, by: Langston Hughes. “Let America be America again. - Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain. - Seeking a home where he himself is free. Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed - Let it be that great strong land of love Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme - That any man be crushed by one above.” In this section the author is introducing the idea that America isn’t what it used to be. America was simple a great dream like pioneers on the plain. It seems like the author is saying that America has changed to something that is unfamiliar and new to society. America was a place of love and romance; a place where no king was up to schemes or no man was better than another. “O, let my land be a land where Liberty - Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, - Equality is in the air we breathe. (There's never been equality for me, - Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")” By the author saying “let my land be a land where Liberty – Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath”. The author is saying give everyone the opportunity to live the American way and not have double standards for certain race or groups of people. Let Americans live the good American way without judgments or harsh radical. The opportunity for freedom is available...

Enoch Arden

...Search Enoch Arden by Lord Alfred Tennyson Published 1864 Long lines of cliff breaking have left a chasm; And in the chasm are foam and yellow sands; Beyond, red roofs about a narrow wharf In cluster; then a moulder'd church; and higher A long street climbs to one tall-tower'd mill; And high in heaven behind it a gray down With Danish barrows; and a hazelwood, By autumn nutters haunted, flourishes Green in a cuplike hollow of the down. Here on this beach a hundred years ago,
Three children of three houses, Annie Lee,
The prettiest little damsel in the port,
And Philip Ray the miller's only son,
And Enoch Arden, a rough sailor's lad
Made orphan by a winter shipwreck, play'd
Among the waste and lumber of the shore,
Hard coils of cordage, swarthy fishing-nets,
Anchors of rusty fluke, and boats updrawn,
And built their castles of dissolving sand
To watch them overflow'd, or following up
And flying the white breaker, daily left
The little footprint daily wash'd away. A narrow cave ran in beneath the cliff:
In this the children play'd at keeping house.
Enoch was host one day, Philip the next,
While Annie still was mistress; but at times
Enoch would hold possession for a week:
`This is my house and this my little wife.'
`Mine too' said Philip `turn and turn about:'
When, if they quarrell'd, Enoch stronger-made
Was master: then would Philip, his blue eyes
All flooded with the helpless wrath of tears,
Shriek out `I hate you...

But there still record stores out there and when you find one it is like a diamond in the coal. I arrived \ on a less then pleasant day the weather was cold and rainy so before I left the safety of my car I turned my collar up to face the cold and made a bee line to the store so fast it would but Usain Bolt to shame. When I walked in the store I was greeted by the smell of coffee and sound of The Rolling Stones song Monkey Man playing over the store speakers with the owner of the store john singing along to the song and throwing his arms up like a monkey. As soon as you walk into the store your face to face with a giant rack of used DVDs ranging from Driving Miss Daisy to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre I was immediately welcomed by john who sitting down in front of this cash register with a sign on it that read “No Personal...
