Let There Be Light

What kind of world would it be without light? A horrible one. The light bulb is a world-changing invention because of this. If it wasn't invented, many world would be dark. The light bulb has given us more than just light though. If taken away, none of or lives would be the same.

The light bulb was invented on October 22, 1879 by a man known as Thomas Alva Edison. This brilliant man has made many more inventions, his important of which is possible the light bulb. Though he technically didn't invent the light bulb, due to his work the where not tossed away as a failed experiment. He later made a company which distributed electricity to the cities and made other items. He then had competition for the distribution of electricity. He later combined his company with another one to for General Electric.

Without the invention of the light bulb, many other fantastic items could not exist. Such items include the TV, computer, and the movies. These items would make our lives not as enjoyable and would destroy the entertainment industry. These items brighten our day up and allows several companies to thrive. There would be no headlights for your car, there would be no Christmas decorations or any form of flashlight. The world would be dark.

The light bulb works by taking just enough electric current to make a piece of metal glow brightly enough to give out visible light yet not get so hot that it melts and breaks. The piece of metal is called a tungsten filament. Experiments were made with different materials to use as the filament, including natural fibres, pure metals and alloys of different metals, to find the material which had the longest life whilst glowing brightly enough to give out visible light. The metal Tungsten was found to be the best. Also experiments were made trying a vacuum or different kinds of gas inside the glass bulb to

Analyzing Paul Bogard's 'Let There Be Light'

...Paul Bogard’s “Let There Be Light” he gives many ways how to preserve natural darkness. He gives examples on how artificial light hurt humans, wildlife, and our ecosystem. “Little darkness meaning too much artificial light at night spells trouble for all.” Bogard successfully proves his argument by the use of data, figurative language, and solution.     By the use of data in his article he got to prove his point of how light affects humans. Paul Bogard states “Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin, which keeps certain cancers from developing, and our bodies need darkness for sleep.”  This proves that with having harmful light no one can get enough sleep. Also the hormone melatonin prevents certain cancers which could save...

Amen INVOCATION TO END SUPRESSION OF WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE EAST Oh Great and Holy Mother of us all, Divine One, Who holds us all, not only in the palm of Her hand, but the softest place in Her heart. I come to You this day, entreating and invoking Your direct aide and assistance in ending something on earth, which I find to be offensive and very painful to You. Oh Dear Mother, won’t You help us to overturn this terrible custom of suppression of Your own daughters, especially in the area of the Middle East, where barbaric customs are still continuing till this day. Oh Dear One, I need not remind You of these things, for You are She, who is feeling every one of them directly on Your own body. So I only want to let you know that I am here as Your daughter (and son if you are a man decreeing), and we are here to pledge our commitment, asking that you please help us to do whatever we can to end this thing, once and for all. We call for the stripping away of the veils that have been placed upon You in millions of cases and for centuries now. Let that be done! Let that be done! Let that be done! ...food products to explore using spectroscopy as your technique for analysis. A variety of factors can affect the calculations intensity of the color of a result. In this investigation you will explore some of these factors. Materials In order to test the intensity of light, there are several different materials needed. Those materials are as follows; colorimeter probe (spectrophotometer), red food color solution, blue food color solution, green food color solution, deionized water, test tubes and rack, pipet, and a timer. Procedures: Part 1 The first part in the experiment is to pour each colored solution into a vial, then calibrate the spectrophotometer. The calibration steps are to set it on the 430nm wavelength, and to place a vial of de-ionized water inside, then press the calibration button and letting it calibrate for 10 seconds. The spectrophotometer should show a percent transmittance of 100% since it is pure water being tested. Calibration is needed before every test is completed. After the spectrophotometer is calibrated, place the vial containing the red food color solution into the machine with the ridged sides pointing to the left and right, then close the lid. Press the start button and let the data collect for about 30 seconds, then press the stop button. Once the test is completed, collect and record the data. Calibrate the spectrophotometer again with the...

...| The Book of Genesis | Analysis | | | | “God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light.” What an impressive way for the world to begin. Could you imagine witnessing something so powerful? I know I could imagine witnessing something so dynamic. The book of Genesis starts the creation of the world. It begins off with God, a spirit, creating heaven and earth, who then hovers over an empty and dark place, which he called earth. Hovering over the earth, He says, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Isn’t that very extraordinary? How many people you know can do that? It goes on to say he called the light day and the darkness night, then evening and morning came and that was the first day of creation. Now, its 24 hours in a day and all God did was say, “Let there be light,” I wonder what He did for 23 hours 59mins and 50secs? Then He said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water”, and it happened and he called that vault heaven, and evening and morning came again and that was considered the second day of His creation. See, what is this man doing with the rest of His day? So I’m guessing the next day is the third day? God then goes on to say, “let the waters under heaven be gathered into one place, so that dry land may appear”, and following He said, “Let the earth produce fresh growth, let there be on earth plants bearing seed, fruit trees bearing fruit each with seed according to its kind”, and apparently all that He...

...miracle. Since God is beyond our understanding, I believe that God has given us scientific evidence, which supports creative design. The model presented in “The Creation Narrative” coincides with scientific theory. The Big Bang Theory states the universe was started from a void by a supernatural force and universe expanded in a great light. Genesis opens with the earth was formless and void, God (a supernatural force) said “let there light,” and there was light. The first age. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe fusing with oxygen water was formed and became comets and ice. And God separated the waters and the sky. The second age. Dense regions of interstellar clouds and dust formed into stars and the residual gas and dust slowly congregated and formed planets. And God gathered the waters into one place and called the dry ground “land” and the water “seas.” And said “let the land produce vegetation…” Then God said “let there be lights in the sky…” The third and fourth ages. The fossil record indicates that marine invertebrates appeared first, then fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and humanity. And God said, “let the water teem with...

...and the conductor at rest, there arises in the neighbourhood of the magnet an electric field with a certain definite energy, producing a current at the places where parts of the conductor are situated. But if the magnet is stationary and the conductor in motion, no electric field arises in the neighbourhood of the magnet. In the conductor, however, we find an electromotive force, to which in itself there is no corresponding energy, but which gives rise—assuming equality of relative motion in the two cases discussed—to electric currents of the same path and intensity as those produced by the electric forces in the former case. Examples of this sort, together with the unsuccessful attempts to discover any motion of the earth relatively to the “light medium,” suggest that the phenomena of electrodynamics as well as of mechanics possess no properties corresponding to the idea of absolute rest. They suggest rather that, as has already been shown to the first order of small quantities, the same laws of electrodynamics and optics will be valid for all frames of reference for which the equations of mechanics hold good.1 We will raise this conjecture (the purport of which will hereafter be called the “Principle of Relativity”) to the status of a postulate, and also...

Lamp on a Stand Parable

...“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (English Standard Version Study Bible) The Lamp on a Stand is a short two verse parable in the Gospel of Matthew, part of Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount is the first of five major discourses in the Gospel of Matthew (English Standard Version Study Bible). During this Sermon, Jesus is talking to His disciples (5:1) about the Kingdom of Life and how it applies to their everyday world. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus expounds on how a Christian, who believes in Christ as their Lord and Savior, ought to live in this life. These teachings are challenging, but they are also practical and ethical; providing a framework for His followers. In the beginning of the Sermon, Jesus provides His disciples with the beatitudes, following with a commission, which includes the Lamp on a Stand parable. Before the Lamp parable is the comparison with salt (5:13); Jesus says that his disciples are the salt of the earth. He uses salt because salt is beneficial for many different things, which is how the disciples are going to influence the world. Jesus says that salt that becomes dull is useless except to be thrown out and trampled down...

...I want to explain the meaning of the COR candle which is the symbol of the weekend. I want you all to think of it as not just an ordinary candle giving light but light which represents Christ, the Light of the world. Light has very special significance, Christ recall that Jesus said “I am the light of the world, no follower of mine, shall ever walk in darkness; no he shall possess the light of life” (John 8:12). Therefore the light is a symbol of faith, truth, wisdom, virtue, grace, the divine life, charity and the sacred presence which flows from Christ himself. So as the candle burns itself out to give light-that is it gives of itself for others so too we must give of ourselves in love to others. I want to tell you the story of the Prophet of Elijah, who was told by an angel to go up to the mountain of Horeb. The angel told Elijah “Yahweh, God wants to speak to you.” When he reached on the mountain he experienced a terrible thunderstorm. But God did not speak to him in the thunderstorm. Then he experienced a great earthquake. But still God did not speak to him. Then there was a raging fire----------but still God did not speak. Finally there came a sound of gentle breeze and God spoke to him then. Just as for Elijah, when we focus on the noise and the tumult of life in this world, we may get our eyes off of the LORD. However, if we listen for His still, small voice and walk in obedience to His Word, we find victory and reward. This is why occasionally we need to retreat and...

The Light

...Light Is this the light at the end of the tunnel? I wait like a lion waits for a prey to eat, when you look in my direction my feelings reach a peak. I sit in silence sadly staring waiting to see your face. SIGH, I wish you weren't such perfection. We fight and argue. I sit like a statue as you speak harsh words, you are a fire breathing dragon and I am a donkey. I act like I dont care and POOF! your gone, im now heartbroken singing my sad somber song. Is this the light at the end of the tunnel? You come right back, you make me laugh, you make me cry, I wish this was as easy as pie. Your like a mathematical equation, I want to figure you out, but your complication doesn't let me have concentration. A roller coaster is what our ''relationship'' is. Our love speaks a language that most people don't understand, it has its flaws, most beautiful things do, I wouldn't kick our relationship like a old pair of shoes for something new. Is this the light at the end of the tunnel? Waiting for you is similair to sleeping for 1,000 years expecting to not drool when you realize its time to wake up. My feelings are deeper then the ocean although, they cause various fights that make you want to leave and take a hike. When we agree, which is almost never I can't help but to hope that its not a joke. We agree to disagree. You are the barking dog and I am the aggrevating flea. I dislike when your around but, I can't help to miss you when I'm...

Light vs Dark

...Light VS Dark XOXOXO ENG/220 October 30, 2014 XOXOX Light VS Dark “Light beer has no flavor”, “dark beer is too heavy” common arguments that are made in the ongoing battle of light versus dark beer. With a recent boom in the craft beer breweries and mega breweries that have been known for years, there are more choices now than ever. Some people choose to have a cool, refreshing light beer, while others choose a bold, flavorful dark beer. The truth is, it is all relative to a person’s personal preference. There are many differences between the two types of beers, but three of the main differences are the way they are brewed, marketed to the public, and the culture associated with each beer. The Brewing Process It is the grain that really makes the difference in the color of the finished beer; this is true whether the beer is made in a large scale brewery or in a mom and pop outfit. Of course, most beer is made from the same grain (barley), though others are brewed with wheat, oats, rye, rice, quinoa and virtually any other grain available, all of which impart their own character to the brew. However, how darkly the malt has been roasted is what gives color and body to the beer. The darker the roast, the darker the beer that results from this ingredient. The roast affects the color of the finished beer as well as the body and many of the flavors in the brew as well. For example, a dark beer tends to have a deeper, more complex set of...

Death Be Not Proud

...Newton a phycisian that discovered the color spectrum used a glass prism to show us how it works. He darken up his room and opened a little whole and let the light come through it, there then he placed a glass prism and let the light hit it. As the light hit the prism rainbow colors appeared he then called it “color spectrum.” Isaac Newton was the first one to discover that colors come from a white color. Hypothesis We believe that as the light hits the glass it wont show as much of the colors of the rainbow. But it will show enough to the point where it helps us know that the white light does creat multicolors. Materials Materials needed for this experiment would be: * Dark room * A flash light * A glass prism * And a white board (for the colors could be seen) Procedure First you will need to turn of the lights in the room where you are at. As soon as it is dark you get the glass prism and the flashlight facing it to a white board. Once it is faced on the white board you placed the glass prism in front of the flashlight, then if you pay close attention you could see the colors of the rainbow appear in the white board. Conclusion Our hypothesis was right not all colors appeared but some of the rainbow colors appeared in the white board. Isaac Newton did a great job finding out that a white light can be created into...
