...I don’t know if it was seeing gay marriage getting legalized in America, or if it was seeing people like Anderson Cooper, Tom Daley or Tim Cook come out as gay, but when I saw how people reacted to all the news with positivity, I saw a glimmer of hope in my future. Although I knew that being gay in society is still difficult, I know that it is not an impossible task to accomplish, and that the future is not as bleak as I had imagined. I started accepting myself for who I am, and not to let others shape me into someone I’m not. I still wasn’t sure how my family was going to react, but I knew Kenny and Stephen would be more open to the news than Mom and Dad. I told them I was bisexual (to test the waters), and they both took the news positively, and kept my secret for 4 years, and for that I will always be grateful and proud to call them my brothers. I also proceeded to tell a few friends about my sexuality, and they were all very accepting, and for the first time, I finally felt like I could be...

...tempered with time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable. An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. Lies are like children: they're hard work, but it's worth it because the future depends on them. Let you hopes, not your hurts, shape your future. Success builds character, failure reveals it. What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Excess on occasion is exhilarating. It prevents moderation from acquiring the deadening effect of a habit. All charming people have something to conceal, usually their total dependence on other’s appreciation. Fools rush in where fools have been before. I generally avoid temptation unless I can resist it. Laughing is the sensation of feeling good all over and showing it principally at one spot. Good taste is the worst vice ever invented. A man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for bona fide stupidity, there ain’t nothin’ can beat teamwork. Men of genius do not excel in any profession because they labor in it, but they labor in it because they excel. There is only real deprivation, I decided this morning, and that is not to be able to give one’s gift to those one loves most. It’s a rare person who wants to hear what he doesn’t want to hear. Throw your heart over the fence and the rest will follow. I don’t have a girlfriend. But I do...

...Briana Moniz Professor Firmender Introduction to College Writing 27 October 2015 There are many factors that shape a person into who they are or who they will become in the future. Not many people can say that they grew up without one of the most important people that will ever be in their life, but unfortunately I did. Imagine not remembering your father, being raised by a single parent, and the worst part of it all, not knowing what its like to have a dad. . For me, my dad passed away when I was just one year old and I believe that is a huge factor in who I am today. It was ten days before I turned two when he passed; I don’t remember anything about him expect his face and that was only from looking at pictures. When I hear the word dad, I most certainly think of mine in an instant, but no memories come to my mind, just his face along with the hope he is up there in heaven. He sang a couple of songs in a band that he was in with a few of my older cousins, which left me with opportunity to get an idea of what his voice sounded like. I have his laugh according to my whole family and my grandma almost cries every time she sees me because apparently, I am a spitting image of my father, who I don’t even know. When I was a little girl I could not bare to be without my mom; I hated going to school and I hated when she went to work, I just never wanted to be away from her because I didn’t know if she would ever disappear like my dad did. I was obsessed with my mom, I panicked...

...what causes unemployment? Do you know who it affects? I do, let me tell you. Unemployment effects everyone, whether it be directly or indirectly. Even if you are employed, the unemployment of people in your community can hit home. As a public relations specialist I work with people on a daily basis to try to get them the assistance they need so that they can get better jobs. There are several causes of unemployment such as recessions, disability, attitude towards employers, willingness to work, employee values, and discriminating factors in the place of work such as age, class, ethnicity, and race. All of these factors and more play a role in the unemployment in today’s society. When you see the downward spiral of joblessness if you are a business owner hire someone to help, if you have connections to great companies let someone know so that we can help decrease the unemployment rate. I hope to supply you with the causes and effects unemployment has on individuals and their families. Discriminating factors in the work place causes unemployment are very much present; it may come in many different ways. They may terminate you from your job because of your age, a lot of employers think that because you have gotten older you may not be able to perform your job as good as you did back when you where younger so they hire a younger individual to keep the work environment young and hip. Another discriminating factor is your ethnicity. If an individual is of a certain ethnicity such...

...answering this question, let’s do an exercise, Everyone shut your eyes, take two deep breaths and picture this scene taking place many years into the future: you are in an elegant dining hall, surrounded by those closest to you (who are dressed beautifully, looking their best). The candles shimmer on every table and the importance of the evening wafts through the air like the aromas from the kitchen. This is your testimonial dinner, an opportunity for the people who know you best to speak about you as a person, your achievements and your contributions to those you love and to society in general. Just for a moment, reflect on what you would like them to say. This reflection my friends; is the perfect life you want for yourself. And how many of us are actually living our perfect life..? There are two competing schools of thought. One says go out there live your dream, be the best, play at your highest potential. And the other says that the purpose of life is to simply enjoy the journey, simply be happy, and live in the moment. When you think about these two schools, you realize that both are equally important, life is all about the balance. It’s important to reach for the mountain top, to keep your eye on the summit to realize your potential but at the same time it’s incredibly important to enjoy the climb up the mountain, to enjoy the journey, to live in the moment. And once you learn to balance these things in your life, my friend this is the perfect life you were all along...

...learn together. It was when I was only twelve years old, my father moved to another city for his career. I became accustomed to only relying on my mother and siblings; that is until my older siblings had developed their independence causing each to move out one after another. I was left with my twin brother and younger sister. My parents became aware their relationship was no longer able to withstand the turmoil and each had cheated on the other. The divorce was finalized and my mother had decided she was no longer needed by my twin brother or myself. We arrived home after school one day to find she was packing her belongings to move to another state. I worked hard to find myself what I could to create a sustainable lifestyle, but I couldn't let go of what emotions had been left inside. My depression grew deeper, eventually leading to self-defeating behavior. My world was altered in a way that I could never get back, but it led to making me the person I am...

...Abuse in the U.S. College Composition 2 CM220-1107 Stephanie Singh In the United States, abuse is a huge issue that needs to be recognized. Abuse is one of the most under-reported crimes with such cruelty and so little is being done to put this matter to a halt. Children and adults should never have to be put through anything like this, and it is a shame anyone has to be a victim. Not many people look at the statistics of abuse and try to find ways to help those in need of help. The more people come together, the better this world would be. We need to reach out to our victims and prove to them there are places we can be safe. Sadly to say, we may never be able to put abuse completely to a stop, but we can help those who have to deal with this issue and make sure everyone knows that nobody is alone. In the United States, there needs to be systems, such as classes in schools and groups to better educate those who are or may become a victim of abuse. Thinking about all of the stories there are out there in our world today that we hear and read about, the number of inmates is quite low for this matter. In the United States itself, there are four-thousand five hundred and seventy-five prisons with 2.2 million prisoners. Only 1.2 percent of them are rapists or child molesters. “One in five violent offenders is molesters and only about 6 percent of rapists serve time in jail. Rape and child molestation is one...

...Jacklyn Marcus, Ph.D 2225 Broadway Suite B Santa Monica, CA 90404 310-714-8809 Unrealistic and Unspoken Expectations Harm Relationships By Jacklyn Marcus, Ph,D Certified Life Skills Coach We all create expectations for ourselves. It is a basic human trait to project our desires and thoughts onto those we are closest to. We tend to expect significant people in our lives to behave in a manner envisioned in our mind. Expectations in relationships can be harmful when unspoken ideals are projected onto the other person. Unspoken assumptions and unrealistic expectations commonly sabotage relationships. How many times have your feelings been hurt because you mistakenly assumed someone else knew what you thought or expected? Do you ever become annoyed or angry with someone who acted differently than you expected? Have you found yourself saying: “If you really loved me, you would…” “Why didn‟t you…” “You should…” It doesn‟t matter what kind of relationship you are in. Each person‟s expectations plays a large part in determining the health of the relationship. Perceptions of a relationship change when there is a contrast between the ideal and the real. The partnership strengthens when one begins to see the relationship for what it really is. Having unrealistic or unfulfilled expectations is a sure way to ruin a relationship. When an individual has a strong desire that their partner meet their impossible expectations they become blinded...

...Regarding significant musical movements throughout history, especially the twentieth century, few had more of an influential impact or were more important than the folk revolution that took shape in the mid-nineteen hundreds in the United States. One of the leaders of this revolution was Robert Allen Zimmerman, known by his stage name, Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was a major influential musical icon for today’s artists as well as future artists to come. His music was embodied by historical context and spoke about what was going on throughout history in the past and present. He knew his music was shaping the industry which he worked. “I’d either drive people away or they’d come closer to see what it was all about. There was no in-between. There were a lot of better singers and better musicians around these places but there wasn’t anybody close in nature to what I was doing. Folk songs were they way I explored the universe, they were pictures and the pictures were worth more than anything I could say” (Dylan, 18). He made numerous contributions to his genre and embodied the spirit and sound of the 20th century. Born in 1941, in Minnesota, Dylan grew up with a very different childhood then other famous singers. He was brought up Jewish and spent most of his time around family since they were the majority of the Jewish people that were in town. He seemed at an early age to develop a natural talent for writing poetry. Dylan took a deep interest in listening to the radio and admired the...
