...of sources for indication. They often listen to their own beliefs and values but those views can be shaped by other considerations. First of all, members of Congress have always constituents in mind. Constituents are the people who live and vote in the same district or state. Legislator will not vote against the wishes of his constituency. But guessing how voters feel about any particular issue often is not easy. If an issue affects the constituency, a representative often will try to determine how the people feel. Staff members often send a lot of letters and make huge amount of phone calls for and against a policy that will be voted on soon. Studies by political scientists show that members vote in conformity with prevailing opinion in their districts about two-thirds of time. The other sources for voting cues are the opinions of one’s colleagues, especially those who belong to the same party. This tendency is observed concerning items of little concern to people back in the district or for which the legislator has little knowledge. The members turn for advice to colleagues who have served on the committee that handled the particular legislation. On issues that are of little interest to a legislator, logrolling, or vote trading, often occurs. Another important source of influence are political parties. Many members of Congress elected on partisan ticket feel the obligation to their party and to the president if he is of the same party. It is clear that when it comes to...

...course. The groups ensured that most individuals in Toronto are aware of the campaign, and what it entails. They also coerced councilors to make legislation in opposition of the intended casino in the city. In their campaign, the advocacy groups ensured that councilors did not have a wide room for voting in favor of the casino. Conflict expansion is the rigorous use of lobbying and advocacy to manipulate legislation, without giving legislators much of a choice. This essay will evaluate the efficacy of conflict expansion, in regard to No Casinos Toronto Campaign. The advocacy groups in the “No Casinos Toronto Campaign” first contacted the legislators in the city regarding their opposing views on the proposed mega-casino. They wrote to the relevant authorities, regarding the upcoming effects of the casino on the public, the businesses and the Toronto society in general. They tried to convince the councilors to legislate in opposition of the mega-casino proposition (TogetherToronto, 2013). After communicating their stand with the legislators, the advocacy groups then launched and online campaign. The online campaign was to get the public opinion against the mega-casino. This public opinion intended to force councilors to vote against the authorization of the casino (Criger, 2012). The advocacy groups in “No Casinos Toronto Campaign” ensured that the public is well equipped and informed concerning the casino. The advocacy groups availed information concerning...

...responsible citizen. Texas Transportation Code 521 requires that ‘A person, other than a person expressly exempted under this chapter, may not operate a motor vehicle on a highway in this state unless the person holds a driver's license issued under this chapter.’ So the legislators are telling us that you need to have a drivers license in order to drive in and around the State of Texas. Also in this chapter, it requires the license holder ‘shall notify the department of the change (of address) not later than the 30th day after the date on which the change takes effect and apply for a duplicate license or certificate as provided by Section 521.146. The duplicate license must include the person's current residence address.’ Not everyone follows this law and they often leave an outdated address on their license. When the state notifies someone of their requirement to pay surcharges, they mail that notice to the address on file for their drivers license. If the person does not get the letter, they may not know that money is due and their license has been suspended. This part of the ethical dilemma is the responsibility on the individual to update the state with where they are located. Our elected legislators also have a responsibility, and that is to the public and the public interest. We vote and elect people into office to which we feel has similar ideals as our own. With these votes of confidence, we rely on them to make sound decisions and pass legislation that will benefit...

...Q. Why has the analysis of crimes of the powerful been such a growth area in criminology over the past century? It is tempting to give a simple or even simplistic answer to the above question: it is tempting to say that analysis and theory of crimes of the powerful have grown so quickly in the last century because the quantity and diversity of such crimes have themselves exploded outwards. As the number of crimes committed by the powerful have risen exponentially across the years and continents, so the police forces, crime-prevention agencies and legislators of the governments charged with halting these crimes have had to evolve into larger and more complex organizations also. For instance, amongst myriad forms of organized crime that developed in the twentieth century, one pertinent recent example is the efflorescence of high-tech and internet crime, where professional and international gangs manipulate technology to extort or steal large sums of money from the public. High-tech crime is of course a recent phenomenon; it did not exist at the turn of the last century. Therefore analysis of such activities by law agencies has grown to respond to this new threat; moreover, the analysis and prevention of such crimes has had to grow in sophistication and size just as the crimes themselves have done. Organized crime - be it narcotic trafficking, prostitution rings, corporate crimes and so on - has become a massive international business, and it has required larger agencies equipped...

...Nurse as an Advocate Nursing Leadership Health Policy Advocating for Health Care Policies. Nurse’s Vital Role as Policy Advocates Introduction “I’m not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward” Thomas Edison (1847-1931). In today’s healthcare system, nurses are aware of the inconsistencies and the troubles that the healthcare system faces, and a need for a change. Expert nurses and nurses with vast experience are stepping forward and motivated to take part in advocacy roles. This movement is initiating a great wave of change in nursing world and how nurses influence a change in policies, regulations and law that oversee the health care system. Nurses stepping into this arena requires great deal of courage and knowledge on how the policies and politics interchange hands to implement a major change in health care system. The nurses who step up into this role should have the will, power and with power comes responsibility to negotiate through the legal system. Methods to advocate for health Nurses taking part in advocacy is not new anymore, but what advocacy means is still a mystery in nursing world. Great theorist like Florence Nightingale and her efforts, did influence other nurses throughout the nursing profession to step out of the box and shape the health system, where discover, heal and teach remains the core motto. Nurses throughout the world in some shape or form initiated policy recommendations, represented their view...

...constituent outreach. About the Office Constituent outreach in the office made up a large part of what we worked on. Although this work was a bit tedious at times, it was also really fun. Each intern in the office was assigned two counties as we were supposed to find five-ten constituents to reach out to each week within those counties. Most of these constituents were people who were highlighted in the newspaper for a number of accomplishments. This means that on any given week, Senator Donovan was writing 35-70 handwritten letters for constituents. I think that sometimes legislators, especially those who hold safe seats, get wrapped up in the work and forget about the constituent communication aspect of their jobs. Communicating with constituents is one of Senator Donovan’s strength and also one of my favorite reasons to work for her. I think that the Senator genuinely cares about what her constituents have to say and is a very people-centric legislator. Not only does Senator Donovan genuinely care about her constituents, she was also really dedicated to making sure that her aide and interns were happy. Prior to her time as a Senator, Donovan was a teacher. In many of her interactions with us, this was very apparent. Senator Donovan was always willing to take the time to explain things to us in a way that was understandable and interesting. Senator Donovan seeks to understand all the bills and was happy to explain the importance and reasoning of each bill, or just answer general...
