Dear: Freshmen First of all, congratulations for making it into an amazing high school where your opportunities is determined by your actions. A few things that I believe you need to know before coming into arrowhead is that you are not special. Just because you come here doesn’t mean that things will be given to you. You don’t get an A+ or an F-, you deserve it. You came here because you know that it will help you be better not that things will be given to you. You work for it hard enough, you will get it. Don’t over work yourself, because for teachers, less is more, dependent on the teacher. One phrase a teacher told me was, “KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.” Don’t do more than you have to because you will not have time. Now I am not saying

It is utterly important to get the meaning of what we are reading otherwise it would be meaningless. It will be like staring at words without knowing what it is about. Reading without comprehension is also like listening to a person talking to you without understanding what he or she actually wants to convey”, Riley Johnson (2010). Reading is indispensable and one of the most important aspects of learning. It is also one of the most essential parts in student’s life. It is necessary to determine the possible problems that the students are facing in relation to their comprehension skills in reading, to come up with the most appropriate strategies in reading suitable for the leaner’s ability to understand the text. Writing Papers in 3rd

...Converting Ideas to Third Person for College Level Writing by Professor Adri-anne Jones In most instances, college freshmen enter college knowing how to write their ideas in first person, I and second person, you but have had little if any experience with third person writing. Therefore, many first-year college students are not prepared to write the typical academic essay and research paper. For the most part, the purpose of writing in the academic environment is to inform, to report, and to persuade. Therefore, the writing style is expected to be formal since students will be engaged in writing research papers, essays, book reports, critiques, proposals, and responses to literary writings. In these formal and academic writing situations—in most cases—the focus is on the subject and not the writer. Therefore, it is crucial that college freshmen learn to master third person writing before they complete their course requirements for freshman composition. Even though argument and persuasive writing is based on the writer’s personal opinion or position on an issue, the writer’s opinion is most often presented in third person. Rather than to write I think . . . or I believe . . . or I feel . . ., the writer should simply state his or her opinion without making a first person reference. For example, the academic writer should avoid such statements like I feel that the restoration of prayer in public schools could likely remedy the lack of discipline in classrooms...

Cameron Okeke: Safe Spaces Got Me Through College

...In the summer months of the progressive year of 2016 one college did the absolutely unthinkable, it attacked safe spaces. The University of Chicago sent a letter to its incoming freshmen telling them that their campus was a hive of intellectual debate, reason, and free speech, scandalous. The blowback from this decision was immense. Tons of Millennials were offended and triggered by the fact that they may have to hear the opinions of people who disagree with them or hear facts, statistics, and jarring world history without trigger warnings, how weak, right? Cameron Okeke on the other hand, paints a different picture of these so called “weak Millennial snowflakes”. In his essay “I’m a black UChicago graduate. Safe spaces got me through college.”...

Nullam Mauris Community Analysis

...and knowledge in diverse fields of study up until the middle school, the high school education in Nullam Mauris is more based on each student’s career interests and preferences. Students can themselves choose their fields of study as their grade levels get higher. Specifically, Nullam Mauris high school curricula can be divided into two groups, which are freshman and sophomore year education versus junior and senior year education. The main difference between two groups of curricula is that freshmen and sophomores continue to learn basic skills and knowledge while juniors and seniors would get more career-based education by requiring them to take elective courses to prepare them for the future. Also, instead of simply measuring students’ ability based on standardized tests, teachers would determine each student’s performance. Rather than just giving the letter grades on each assignment, teachers would give a comment and feedback on students’ works. This feedback mechanism, instead of the letter grading system with standardized tests, would be more helpful for students in learning because...

...about themselves. It showed how and where each of them grew up. It showed how the recruiters kept trying and trying to get them all to come and play for the University of Michigan. Juwan Howard was the first one to sign to play basketball there. As the movie goes on, it shows how they get the starting line up. It was a huge step for the University of Michigan because 5 freshman were on the starting lineup and almost every game. After they lost to one of the hardest schools, Duke, they went on a little vacation to Europe to help get their minds off the tough loss. They played a little basketball there. They also had some team bonding while they were in Europe. It was well needed because some of the upperclassmen were being rude to the 5 new freshmen. The Fab Five started to complain about how they can’t work because of all the time and effort baseketball takes up and they need money for gas, food and other necessities. The movie ends with Chris Webber and the trial. The trial happened with the Grand Jury because Chris Webber was accused of accepting a lot of money from booster member Ed Martin. Ed Martin was illegally gambling, them giving the money to all the boys to help with their needs. He was hoping that they would eventually return all the money he loaned to them when they went pro. Obviously that didn't happen and they all got caught. When Chris Webber wouldn't talk to the president of the school board, they took away their titles and took the banner out of the gym. ...

...Brie Meadows Social Research Design Dr. Humphries 11 December, 2014 Final Examination 1. What are the differences between obtrusive and unobtrusive research methodologies? Please use examples. Give examples of content analysis and life histories. What are the data sources for this type of research? Obtrusive research methods are those methods of studying where the object of study is aware they are the focus of a study. Examples of obtrusive research methods would be surveys, interviews, and questionnaires, etc. Unobtrusive research methods are those methods of studying social behavior without affecting it. There are many different types of unobtrusive research methods. However, the three dominant methods are through content analysis, analysis of existing statistics, and historical comparative analysis. These factors are all extremely important when considering what constitutes as good research methodologies. Content analysis is when researchers examine a class of social artifacts such as newspaper editorials and articles, but moreover, we find that it is the study of recorded human communications. Web pages, magazines, books, speeches, letters, and other forms of communication are all possible venues for content analysis, and these types of media have much further reaching effects than one might think. These data sources provide every day examples of the information that a researcher is looking for without being too obtrusive, which can skew data. Looking at the trends over...

Honors University Contextual Analysis

...This past week in Honors University Perspective, we discussed the not-so-secret weapon called office hours, how to argue for a grade, and approaches to studying. The topics we discussed are heavily prevalent in students’ lives, especially freshmen. What this class teaches me is valuable information that will stick with me for the rest of my life; it can be applied not only in an educational setting, but a professional setting as well. I had previously been weary of office hours, mostly because professors seemed too sophisticated and busy for me. The points presented arguing why office hours are crucial to a student’s success convinced me that I was the only one in control of my learning, and the only thing stopping me from forming personal...

Applied Education

...May 1st, 2015   Michelle Kyriakides Career Services Director, Experimental Learning Saint John’s University 8000 Utopia Parkway Queens NY 11439  Dear Ms. Kyriakides, It is in the nature of Saint John’s University to always enhance, educate and strive for excellence in all aspects. Career Services is a vital department of the university that is not being used to its fullest potential. While a number of students are continuing to graduate with a diploma of academic success, many still are not prepared for the real world. Majority of students spending an entire semester absorbing lectures and solely taking notes, to simply be tested. This does not qualify as a complete educational experience. While learning through lectures and studying is important, it should not encompass a hundred percent of a college semester. This repetitive form of learning is not thoroughly benefiting students. There is a significant piece of the puzzle that is absent from the university: Experience. I am calling this issue to your attention because a project of this scale would need funding from the department. Using the program “Applied Education”, designed to combine coursework and fieldwork into a holistic educational experience could be a benefit to you. I understand that you assure SJU students are receiving the best advice to compete in today's global marketplace. It was through your innovative new model, that the university has significantly increased student engagement with Career...
