Letter to the Brown family
In august 2014 a black boy named Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer. His family was sent a letter from a family with a likewise situation. Sybrina Fulton wrote this letter to show that the Brown family isn’t alone, and to give advice. With crimes like these, it’s hard to know what to do. Fulton writes that her only helping advice is to “pray for you then share my continuing journey as you begin yours.” With such a sentence it shows, how much these two families have been going through.
Sybrina Fulton creates a certain personal credibility when she starts her letter with “I wish”. The way she compares herself with the victim family also creates a feeling of ethos. It is impossible to read this without getting a lump in the throat. It is clearly to see that all of her words are wisely chosen to give a certain feeling. With her enormous vocabulary it’s a matter of course that she has a big knowledge about the subject. Again, with her special chosen words it gives us a vision about who the writer is. Without her introducing herself it would be not very hard to inspect where she comes from and what her background of this text is. It gives us as the audience a sense of the writers’ authority.
Her intention of this letter is neither to attack nor to defend somebody. It is a letter of knowledge. A knowledge that gives the reader a special kind of information. It is a text written to neither exhort nor dissuade nor to praise or blame. It is a letter written to teach, delight and persuade. Her intentions is wake up an audience to make this stop, but she tries simultaneous to give the Brown family some kind of a reason to believe in the good things instead of concentrating on the bad things that happens too often.
