Give an outline of the various attitudes to the show Boys and Girls Alone expressed in “Letters to the Editor” (text 1) and “I was right to put TJ on TV” (text 2) In the first part of the text “Letters to the Editor” we read how Channel 4 explains to Dr. Richard House that the children are safe and it is all good. How the children’s welfare comes in first place and that the parents can talk to their child whenever they want to and even take them out of the show if that is necessary. The text is all positive and Andrew Mackenzie who writes the letter makes sure that it can’t be misunderstood in any way that the children are safe. The other part of the text is written by Dr. Richard House who is a Senior Lecturer in Psychotherapy. This part of the text is total opposite from the first. Dr. House means the program is “a grotesque social experiment conducted on child guinea-pigs”. It is easy to hear how he is against the program. He thinks it is really bad for the children’s psychology because the program brings the children in the “fake” safe environment. You...

...Letter to the Editor Letter to the Editor In trying to meet the needs of aging adults and the elderly there are many caregivers, and responsible parties to assist with aiding an aging adult. Each individual and each situation has unique circumstances. However there are many people involved in the care and decisions surrounding older adults. Many times when aging individuals begin to need assistance, or help the question is who will take this responsibility, who will protect the elderly? More often than not family members are the first to step and take on the responsibility of elderly family members. Granted family may not always be the best option for taking on the responsibility of another, there may alternate motives, or the family may not be providing the best care. This is why it will really depend because each individual’s situation will differ from another. In some instances an aging adult may not have any family that can take on this responsibility. Therefore in some instances close friends or acquaintance may need to take this role. As stated previously this will depend on the individual circumstance of the aging adult. There may be instances where friends or acquaintance may not be the best option; they may not be protecting the elderly. Additionally there are also times that elderly individuals are not able to make decisions; there may be diminished competency which does not allow the person to make choices for themselves. Hospitals, community organizations, and...

I am going to argue that it is an unfair practice for potential employers to use social networking to disqualify candidates for future employment. 3. Purpose and Thesis: The purpose identifies whether you’re writing to support, refute, or extend the ideas of the publication to which you are responding. The thesis statement lets the reader know what to expect in your letter. To complete your thesis, start with a formula such as “I agree with [topic/issue/author] because…” OR “I do not agree with [topic/issue/author] because…” I do not agree with the practice of prospective employers using Facebook to investigate their employees. 4. Reader/Audience Profile a. Readers’ Expectations: Write down the specific expectations of readers of the publication and how you plan to accommodate them. ...Letter to Editor Dear Editor: On August 8 in 2007 Barry Bonds broke the Major League Baseball (MLB) home run records by 31years. However, most major newspapers and magazines columns were indifferent and negative to his home run record. The expressions from them are very different from wild enthusiasms and cheers when he broke Mark McGwire’s single season home run record because Bonds is under suspicion for steroid use. Beside in these cases, major leaguers’ performance enhancing drugs stories rise out many different way such as Jose Canseco autobiography, Mark McGwire admits he uses the steroids and goes on to hit a then record 70 homers. According to the MLB official site, the investigation of MLB organization found that 5 percent to 7 percent of 1438 tests were positive about performance enhancing drugs during the 2003 season. The Major League player were used performance enhancing drug and even existence of the drug policy keep under suspicion about it nowadays . So, I think MLB need to improve current performance enhancing drugs policy. According to the MLB official site, Major League Baseball’s drug policy joint drug prevention and treatment program is established by agreement after the 2004 season between the MLB Players Association and the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball in order to ban baseball players’ performance enhancing drugs including anabolic steroids and other illegal drugs. There was one unannounced mandatory test for...

...Kirsty Archer RE: ”Sydney cyclist loses function in hand after collision with car” I write to you in relation to the before mentioned article you have written in the Sydney Morning Herald. Though I do feel for those who were injured in this collision, it begs the question; should they be on our roads at all? In Sydney alone, tax payers have facilitated a bike path plan at the cost of $5.4 million that will now be removed. In its place the government has proposed spending an unimaginable $76 million on a European-style cycle way. So in a city already crippled by congestion, we have decided to narrow roads to assist cyclists? Yet they pay no registration, no green slip, have no motors, no indicators or mirrors and weigh a mere 9kg on average more than the pedestrians (weight of bike) we do our best to shelter on footpaths? In the article it is suggested that bike lanes be installed on the stretch of road where the collision occurred, where does it end? The common complaint amongst motorists about cyclists is that they ride in large groups. Instead of being in a single file formation, they resemble a cluster and ride dangerously close to road lanes. I frequently observe cyclists on the wrong side of the road, ignoring traffic laws, going through red lights and often fail to indicate their intention of turning. I strongly believe that something needs to be done in order for this unfortunate situation to not be repeated. If cyclists want to be treated like a motorist...

...The Honorable Gregory A. Ballard Mayor of Indianapolis 2501 City-County Bldg. 200 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN 46204 Dear Mayor, Today with the advanced progress of medical science and the health system capacity, the population‘s health care seeking behavior is much more improved. However the fact that people’s access to good health care should or should not depend on social factors such as their level of income or social status has so far aroused much concerns. As far as I am concerned, all people should be allowed to access health care services[->0] regardless of their social backgrounds. Good care access is considered as one of the essential human rights. This matter has become far more pressing in this modern society. People day by day suffer from inevitable new threats that strongly affect their length of life such as terminal illness, accidents, epidemics and other emerging diseases like stress and so forth. Health care service is therefore very important to ensure people’s survival first, and then step by step improve people’s quality of life. Getting accessed to health system[->1] for all people is one of the effective solutions to narrow down the gap between the rich and the poor. As the poor are offered chances to improve both physical and mental health, they are more likely to get jobs and work more efficiently. In this way, they are able to escape the overwhelming poverty and explore their potential capacity. Throughout so many years...

...Sir Editor Washington Post Dear Sir: In response to the published press release, NAACP Report Reveals Disparate Impact of Coal-Fired Power Plants, I would like to offer some food for thought. There is no doubt that burning coal can be harmful to the environment and the health of humans that are exposed to it, but the manner in which the NAACP manipulates the issue to paint a picture of power companies taking advantage of the poor and minorities to create a racial and social status issue is unethical. No one disputes the fact that something needs to be done to minimize toxic emissions from power plants. According to Patterson, old, dirty coal plants are poisoning our environment (189). We are in an age of advanced technology where brilliant minds come up with amazing things. We have the ability; we only lack commitment from our government to make it happen. As Jealous believes, coal pollution is literally killing low-income communities and communities of color (189). Although the statement may be true, he is missing the root cause. Power plants did not build low-income housing around their facilities. Real estate developers seized an opportunity. They are the ones who should be held accountable for unscrupulous motives. Regardless, that fact does not help our current situation. Our government must work with power plants to convert to clean energy to make us a better country as a WHOLE. I believe the NAACP could gain a lot of credibility if they acted on behalf of Americans...

...JUAN MAGGIE FOX Dear Editor, In the article, “First Lady Proposes Bon on Junk Food Marketing in Schools” from nbcnews.com states that Michelle Obama is against fast food advertising in school campuses. “Our classroom should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food”, where her exact words in the white house. School should be a place where kids study and interact with healthy and educational material and not a marketing place for junk food companies. “If you can’t sell it, you ought not to be able to market it”, said U.S. Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack. Vilsack mentions as well that there are hundreds of millions of dollars spend a year in just marketing foods and drinks to kids in school. I strongly believe that all this should be banned since advertising persuades kids to buy more junk food and that is unhealthy for kids especially since kids spend forty hours in school a week. Mrs. Obama does right in proposing that junk food advertising should be banned from school, as I grew up most kids around me in school were not overweight but this was in the early 2000’s. However now things are very different, as I drive by school I see many kids who are eagerly eating unhealthy food such as chips and the bad thing is as they’re coming out of school, most of these children seem overweight. Sincerely, Juan Morales Juancm.03@gmail.com Reference page First Lady Proposes Ban on Junk Food Marketing in Schools - NBC News. (n.d.). NBC News...

...The letter to the editor is addressing the environmental extremists who, in her view, and taking away her country to make monuments instead of allowing them to enjoy the forests. The writer is responding to the publication on how they want to, “[save] this or conserving that.” She makes the point about saving humanity instead of saving every bit of land on the face of this earth. The writer completely disagrees with what and why the environmentalists want to save all of the land. Her tone is very annoyed and disagreement towards their ideas. I believe that the writer did not think clearly about what their are writing about due to the lack of evidence and analysis. For example, she jumped back and forth between why we shouldn’t save the...

...Unit 4 Project: Letter to the Editor October 24, 2009 The Washington Post 1150 15th Street NW Washington, DC 20007 Dear Editor: I am writing this letter in response to the article by Alan K. Simpson entitled, “A Sentence too Cruel for Children.” Simpson’s discussion concerns the decision that will be rendered during the oral arguments held by the U.S. Supreme Court on November 9th with respect to two cases; Sullivan vs. Florida and Graham vs. Florida. The deliberation will determine whether it’s cruel and unusual punishment to sentence a 13 year old and a 17 year old to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a crime that did not involve the taking of a life constitutional. His position is illustrated in a re-visit to his early childhood; he confesses to being on probation at the age of 17 for destroying federal property, yet reveals the admiration he had for the parole officer’s genuine concern expressed in his ability to listen. The turning point was at the age of 21 when he spent a night in jail for hitting an officer; again he was given the opportunity to turn his life around, and he did. Sullivan is now a lawyer who works with juvenile offenders, and parents who are aware of his history also request his help with their children. He narrates his personal experience in an effort to plead with the U.S. Supreme court to decide in favor of giving other young people the same second chance. Simpson effectively argues his position through...

...Letter to the Editor on Children of Divorce In the article of “Is Divorce Bad for Children?” by Hal Arkowitz and Scott O. Lillenfeldm, talks about how children are affected, when their parents are going to split up. I had felt so many things, when my parents split up, luckily I was old enough to understand, but yet I felt all kinds of pain and emotion’s going through my head. I know how it feels, when I see children go through so much mixed emotions. Growing up with my nephew’s who lived with me for 20 years went through their parents divorcing. From what I know, divorce is a bad separation, because it can cause children to have bad grades, they can be affected emotionally, and mentally. Everyday the divorce rate is growing rapidly. Which means that half of American families are likely to split up, and more than half of the kids from these families are likely to be depressed and poor academic in school. First, American families are likely to split up, and more than half of the kids from these families are likely to be depressed, and poor academic in school, has become a major issue in today’s society. Today, many people see divorce as a bad or good thing. I personally think it is bad for every child to go through this. Although couples that are divorce, benefits them because they are no longer suffering from each other and their children can stop seeing them argue. And “a separation may be in the best interest for the child in the long run, but tangible change is difficult...

...Letter to the Editor Wall Street Journal Slow Economic Growth affects the efforts to fight poverty Dear Sir, As a business student, the article by McKay (2016), Slow Growth Clouds Fight Against Poverty caught my full attention. This is because I found the article to be very informative and it enlightened me so much. I therefore write you to concur with the comments of the writer. I want to point out some of the points that I found very informative in the article. It is true that slow growth of the economy affects the fight against poverty and that the impact that the growth of the economy has on poverty has been documented. Kasen (2008) argues that the factors that really impact the efforts of poverty eradication lie in the economic inequalities that are present in the economy. This is because one cannot measure the poverty that is present in the developed economies in the same manner as measuring the poverty level that is present in the developing economies. The main reason as to why one cannot use the same measurement indicators in the two economies is because the definition about poverty varies in the two economies. When there is a slow growth in the economy, the numbers of people that will benefit from it are just a few individuals who are able to meet their needs despite the performance of the economy. The people who are really affected by the slow growth of the economy are the poor people. Efforts to eradicate poverty in a slow economy are hindered because the state...

...The editorial piece ‘The good, the bad and the ugly’ written by the editor, published in ‘The Daily Tribute’ 16th July 2009, is written in response to this “puerile cultural vandalism”. The editor slams council officials and the local government for “[dragging their] heels for months” and then “[refusing] to offer support” to local businesses and individuals. One day after the publication of this editorial piece, Michaela Whitehouse, a member of the East Park council, writes in response to the article. Whitehouse intends to set the facts straight and to “address [the editors] less enlightened remarks” through her angry yet controlled tone. The editor presents his article with the bold, cliché title ‘The good, the bad and the ugly’ capturing the attention of ‘The Daily Tribute’ readers. Accompanied by a picture dominated by “lurid and tasteless sexual diagrams and obscenities”, the editor is able to establish the demoralising effects of graffiti. The graffiti resembling the “ugly” from the title, demonstrates that these “thugs” are not interested in what their finished product looks like; they will continue to “desecrate” properties at their own accord. The opening paragraph of the editorial embeds strong and attention grabbing language enforcing the difference between hardworking “entrepreneurs” and “dual-mortgage bearers” and “thugs” who “desecrate” the freshly painted wall of “heavily pregnant” women.
