Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
A library is a collection of books, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use," and in this sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics, and biology.
This research is intended for public, institutions and researchers’, use as their resourceful information. In particular, this study will help the library personnel or the librarian in monitoring the books accurately. Further, the use of cataloguing will be made easier through an advance system provided by this study.
The librarian is encountering problems in doing transactions like borrowing books, checking the availability of books, returning and accessioning of books because all the transactions are being done manually. The process is time consuming.
The proponents decided to propose this system to help Tomas Claudio Memorial College enhance the daily transaction in library. This proposed system will provide their library a computerized system making it more organized and easy to access. The advantage of this study is to make their current system more effective and efficient.

Objectives of the Study

This study is design to develop a computerized Library user’s statistics to eliminate the manual process of gathering data from students, faculty, and faculty every time they enter the library.

General Objectives

The proposed system aims to minimize paper works, manage and organize the data, save time, increased productivity and have efficient and accurate data of students, faculty, and employees that use the Library.

Setting of the Study
This Study was conducted at Tomas Claudio Memorial College.
Founded on August 15, 1950, Tomas Claudio Memorial College is one of the pioneering private higher education institutions, particularly serving the people along the lake-shore towns of Eastern Rizal. And it is doing great despite the challenges of globalization and the economic slowdown worldwide. It was named in honor of Tomas Claudio, a national hero from Morong, who died during the First World War as an Allied soldier fighting for the ideals of democracy.
The Tomas Claudio Memorial College Library (TCMCL) is committed to provide adequate and relevant information necessary for the conduct of research and studies by the students, academic personnel and other constituents of the province of Rizal and neighboring communities.

Specific Objectives
•To be aware of the policy NO LIBRARY CARD, NO ENTRY Students will always bring their cards every time they will enter the Library and strictly adhere to the rules and regulation of the school. •To eliminate the manual recording system of time in/out and attendance of the student in campus. •The system keep the student records (name, course, year, student number, picture and time in/out) using database. This will be determine and update the student whenever entering the Library.
•To improve the existing Library system of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The study entitled Library user’s statistics of the College library of Tomas Claudio Memorial College was conducted at Tomas Claudio Memorial College,
Morong, Rizal during school year 2013 – 2014.
The proposed system is limited to all college students, employee, and administration of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.
The Library User’s Statistics is mainly concerned with the collection of data upon entry of user’s in the library and have efficient and accurate delivery of information. This system perceived time saving and improved the quality for providing more complete information.
The study does not include the student’s from basic education department, and user’s from different schools.

Significance of the Study
The study will be beneficial to the following:
Administration. The result of the study gives them computer program in the school and will have secured records.
Librarian. The Study will help the Librarian in terms of reducing the paper works and will have a reliable database.
Faculty and Students. They can easily Log-in and Log-out by simply scanning their library cards.
Future Researchers. This study will guide the future researchers that will conduct studies that is concerning with library system.

Conceptual Paradigm
The Figure 2 on page __ shows the Conceptual Paradigm of Library User’s Statistics System of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.
The First frame which is the input phase refers to the respondents of the study to perceive the level of acceptability in terms of accuracy, applicability, user-friendly, completeness, portability and modifiability.
The second frame focuses on Process phase to conduct interview, preparation, validation, distribution, gathering information, designing and testing of software, distribution of questionnaire, tallying, tabulation, analysis of data, and interpretation of the result.
The third frame is the Output phase which includes the developed software Library User’s Statistics System of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.
The Feedback includes the proposed implementation of the develop software based on the conclusion and recommendation of the study.

Context Diagram
Figure 3 on page __ illustrate the context diagram of Library User’s Statistics System of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.
The Proposed system intends the students and faculties profile into the system and the information must be search into the database and User’s Statistics Records.

Existing Data Flow Diagram
Tomas Claudio Memorial College uses manual recording of Log-in and Log-out of students and faculty in the Library. The students and faculty has to write their names and time when they enter the library, and will write again the time when they went out.
Figure 4 on page __ shows the Existing Data Flow Diagram of Library User’s Statistics Records of Tomas Claudio Memorial College.

Proposed Data Flow
The Figure 4 on page __ was the Proposed Data Flow Diagram of the study. It shows the process of how the study works starting from the students and faculties giving the information needed going to the User’s Statistics record then, will be recorded and updated to the database.

Library System

...A Library System 1. Inception We have been asked to build a computer based library system that will handle the bookkeeping aspects of a library and provide user browsing facilities. The first thing to do is to go and find out about the target library or libraries to see what they do now and what they would like to be able to do. We get the following data: 2. Requirements Books and Journals. The library contains both books and journals. It may have several copies of the same book. Some of the books are for short term loans only. All other books may be borrowed by any library member for 3 weeks. Only members of staff may borrow journals. Members of the library can normally borrow up to 6 items at a time, but members of staff may borrow up to 12 items at a time. New books and journals arrive regularly and sometime disposed of; the catalogue needs to be updated. The current year’s journals are sent away to be bound at the end of each year. Borrowing. It is essential that the system keeps track of when books and journals are borrowed and returned. The new system should produce reminders when a book is overdue. It may be desirable to allow users to extend their loans if the book is not reserved. The system enforces the rules for borrowing given above. Browsing: The system should allow users to search for a book on a particular topic or by a particular author etc. The user should then be able to check if the book is on loan and if so to reserve the book. To...

...distinction with data and information in the context of information systems. Data are collection of facts and figures which relay something specific but which are not organized in any way and which provide no further information regarding patterns and context. For data to become information, it must be contextualized, categorized, calculated and condensed (Davenport & Prusak, 2000). Information thus paints a bigger picture; it is data with relevance and purpose. It may convey a trend in the environment, or perhaps indicate a pattern of sales for a given period of time. Data, information and knowledge can all be viewed as assets of organizations. Many organizations realize they own a huge amount of knowledge and that this knowledge needs to be managed in order to be useful. There are two types of knowledge: namely explicit and tacit knowledge (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995). Tacit knowledge was originally defined by Polanyi in 1966. It is sometimes referred to as know-how (Brown & Duguid, 1998) and refers to intuitive, hard to define knowledge that is largely experience based. Tacit knowledge tends to reside within the head of the knowers, whereas explicit knowledge is formalized and codified, and is sometimes referred to as know-what (Brown & Duguid, 1998). It is therefore fairly easy to identify, store and retrieve (Wellman 2009). This type of knowledge most easily handled by Knowledge Management System, which are very effective at facilitating the storage, retrieval...
