Personal growth is a self-improvement characteristic that should be continually worked on, there is always room for growth no matter what a person's status, education, or culture. Nurses should always be learning; nurses communicate with others daily emphasizing the need to make every effort to enhance communication skills on a continual basis. Below are some examples of growth opportunities in written, oral, and nonverbal communication skills.
Written: written communication among nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. To communicate effectively using written communication among health care professional the message needs to be clear, relevant, and complete. To achieve this the health care system has come up with electronic charting, e-prescriptions and are now using emails, and texting. Doctors can use e-scripts to prevent medication errors, nurses can chart electronically and other nurses and doctors can understand what is charted and follow with appropriate nursing care. For example, written communication is one form of communication I often use. E-mails are used more often to communicate with other nurses in a home health setting. Calling and giving verbal orders is difficult when phone reception is bad, background noise is too loud, and the absence of non-verbal communications made it more difficult to communicate. Currently we use e-mails and texting quite often. One way that would make this communication better would be to add passwords to e-mails before they can be open to prevent HIPAA violation.
