Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader and to understand the qualities that are most important to me. I have experience leadership through playing on a school basketball team, being part of groups in for class presentations, and being a youth leader in my church. Of the many qualities needed to be a good leader I have learned and now value the most thru these experiences persistence, courage, charisma and patients. Playing sports in school gave me the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams and taught me the value of persistence. I now realize that even if you fail or lose a good leader does not give up, you still have to get right back up and realize your mistakes and prepare more to benefit the team. When you come back the next time, be mentally and physically prepared, and ready to meet the next challenge. When youths and adults who do not posses this leadership trail and fail at something in their life, they automatically think that they cannot do it, and they give up. They do not possess the trait of persistence and thus they fail as leaders. In the classes where I had to be part of a group to do projects I learned the valuable leadership trait of courage. I try to take the initiative to encourage people to speak up and give ideas to the group and brainstorm to come up with ways that help the group to achieve our goals even if it is against or opposite of what is popular amongst my friends. In these situations I use the valuable trait of charismatic leadership qualities to get to our end goal. Being a youth leader at my church has helped me to become a better leader because it helped me value patience. Some of the young kids I taught do not understand everything I teach. I had to find ways to get kids to understand the bible stories so had to find what games the kids liked

Eleanor Roosevelt Life and Leadership

...Eleanor Roosevelt and Leadership The Early Years Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884 in New York City, New York. Although economically comfortable, her family was very distressed. Elliot Roosevelt, her father, was an alcoholic and was frequently troubled with mental depression. Elliot was also away from the home frequently for business, pleasure or medical treatment; Eleanor’s father entered a sanitarium for alcoholics when she was just a child. Her mother, Anna Hall Roosevelt, was very concerned with keeping the family’s high class reputation in society and as years passed she became very disconsolate trying to balance her responsibilities (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 1998). Eleanor recognized the tension and problems in her family at a young age, taking much of the responsibility for her mother’s unhappiness. Eleanor cared so much for her mother, yet she was embarrassed by Eleanor’s homeliness and continually reminded her of her lack of beauty. Her mother even went as far as to give her nicknames, such as “Granny” for being plain and lacking beauty. When Eleanor was eight years old, her mother passed away, starting the theme of death that she would endure throughout her childhood. Eleanor and her younger brothers went to live in New York with their maternal grandmother. Not long after moving to her grandmother’s home, Eleanor received the news that her older brother had passed away. Shortly before Eleanor was ten, she learned that her father, too...

Leadership Definition

...How would you define leadership? (250 words maximum) There are several ways to define leadership. A process that influences other people to achieve an objective and guides the company or community in a way to make it more coherent and cohesive is called leadership. We can also define leadership as a process of leading people in the right direction in order to achieve goals. Leaders apply leadership attributes such as values, knowledge and skills to implement this process in any organization. Leadership ensures that that the organization works successfully and accomplishes the desired goals. It motivates people to excel in the field they are working. Leadership does not mean yelling at your followers to accomplish certain tasks. Leadership does not mean just imparting instructions to its followers but also striving hard to implement and achieve the desired goals. If you are the boss of a company that does not mean you will have leadership qualities. Leadership makes its followers want to accomplish high goals. Thus, leadership will be aptly defined as a process that encourages the followers to achieve their objectives. Leadership qualities are not inborn but can be developed gradually through education and self-study. Leadership is about awakening the persistence and passion among its followers, colleagues, friends, community members to get the desired result. Some have defined leadership as an ability to transform dream into reality. I see leadership in my late father who is...

...ASSESSMENT THREE – PART A: DEVELOPMENT PLAN Task 1: Identify and evaluate your current leadership abilities. 1.1 Identify your current leadership skills and qualities. Some of the leadership skills and qualities I’ve identified in me, are as follows: * Courage * Self Confidence * Intelligence * Knowledge * Punctuality * Humility 1.2 Rank your current ability in those areas. If I was to rank my abilities, I’d do it as follows: * Courage (5/10) * Self Confidence (4/10) * Intelligence (5/10) * Knowledge (4/10) * Punctuality (3/10) * Humility (5/10) * Commitment (5/10) * Patience (5/10) 1.3 Give reasons for your ranking. I think I have the courage to do things but I lack the self confidence. I believe that I’m a little on intelligence and knowledge but I still lack the punctuality. I’m always humble towards others. If I commit myself to do a work, I dont leave it until its completed. I also believe that I have a lot of patience and am always willing to wait. 1.4 Support the reasons for your ranking with evidence. Courage is what I believe I have, because it was not easy for me to travel to New Zealand, where I knew nobody. But I lack the self confidence which makes me feel somewhat shy to talk to new people. And also, I have good grasping skills and am a fast learner, which I can account into intelligence. But still, I have to learn a lot of new things which are not known to me. And I also...

Wheatley Leadership

...B Oscar Miranda Reyes Crystal Alexander Tashia Orr Lourdes Gonzales Wenchey Johnson Looking back on your business and personal experience, do you have any stories to tell that contrast the “old” and the “new” stories of leadership as Wheatley, describes them? Have you practiced or been informed by either leadership approach? Wheatley (2007) describes the old story of leadership as “a story of dominion and control, and all-encompassing materialism.” It can be explained by analogizing it to a machine; a lifeless object that does not have the capability to think, feel, or make decisions. It, the machine, functions quite like the old story of leadership by where there are many more managers (machines) than leaders. An ideology that she credits to Western culture, which believes organizations, can create processes that people will carry out in a machine-like manner. Wheatley (2007) states that “we would engineer it to do what we saw fit, and we would fix it through our engineering brilliance” (p. 17). Managers utilizing the “old” style of leadership will create processes and expect the people to follow the process exactly as is with little, if any, room for deviation from that process. By contrast, the new story of leadership encourages creativity and deviation from the “status quo”. Wheatley (2007) further argues that, people never behave like machines and often will resist change or “add their own spin” to directions. In the new story “key human traits as uniqueness...

Leadership Audit 1

...Maxwell, “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” That is especially true when you are looking at church leadership-past and present. From David to Nehemiah to church leaders of today, these leaders exercise some type of influence over the people they have lead or are leading. Aubrey Malphurs takes the definition of leadership and turns it up another notch. Leaders just don’t have influence over the people they lead. They use their influence “to influence people in a particular context to pursue their God-given direction”.[1] In other words, it is the church leadership’s job to help the people they lead to see God and His work in their lives, to understand their purpose, actively pursue God’s plan for their life, and carry that plan out effectively. Because of the heavy mandate that all church leadership carries, it is imperative for anyone who is in a leadership position to know their leadership style and their strengths and weaknesses as it pertains to leadership. The best way to do this is to do a self-elevation or use resources that will help you survey the effectiveness of your leadership. During the first half of this course, I have been given the opportunity to read about qualities that a leader should possess. Along with the reading, the author has provided audits that when taken would help me to survey my leadership style and determine to what degree I possess these qualities. This leadership audit is...

...Hunter Dixon Sports Management Mr. Fuhrman 9 May 2012 Leadership Paper Over the course of my life, there have been many influential people that have influenced me and made an impact on my life in some way. However, of all these people, there is one person that stands out in my life as more influential than any other. This person is my dad Jerry. My dad has been influential in my life because he has always been there for me every step of the way and has always encouraged me. Simply put, my dad possesses many qualities of a leader. One leadership quality that my dad possesses is that he is intelligent. He has demonstrated this quality to me because I have taken notice that he always makes the best decision possible when he is confronted with a problem. He also helps me to make my own decisions when I have a problem of my own. A second leadership quality that my dad has is that he is cooperative and works well with others. For example, my dad and I are always working together on things around the house. I know that my dad has good cooperative leadership skills because he is always working with others during his job, and he works well with others to complete his tasks at work. Third, my dad has initiative to complete his work. Instead of someone having to tell him what needs done, he just goes out and does whatever work needs to be completed. This has had a major impact on my life because I also take initiative to complete my work. I feel that a good leader has to have...

Situational Leadership Theory

...SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP THEORY The situational leadership theory, is a leadership theory developed by Paul Hersey, professor and author of the book Situational Leader, and Ken Blanchard, leadership guru and author of The One Minute Manager, while working on the first edition of Management of Organizational Behavior (now in its 10th edition).[1] The theory was first introduced as "Life Cycle Theory of Leadership".[2] During the mid-1970s, "Life Cycle Theory of Leadership" was renamed "Situational Leadership theory".[3] In the late 1970s/early 1980s, the authors both developed their own models using the situational leadership theory; Hersey - Situational Leadership Model and Blanchard et al. Situational Leadership II Model.[4] The fundamental underpinning of the situational leadership theory is that there is no single "best" style of leadership. Effective leadership is task-relevant, and the most successful leaders are those that adapt their leadership style to the maturity ("the capacity to set high but attainable goals, willingness and ability to take responsibility for the task, and relevant education and/or experience of an individual or a group for the task") of the individual or group they are attempting to lead or influence. Effective leadership varies, not only with the person or group that is being influenced, but it also depends on the task, job or function that needs to be accomplished.[5] Blanchard, Kenneth H., Patricia Zigarmi, and Drea Zigarmi. Bible Integration

...Abstract Servant-leadership is widely researched and discussed from a secular and Christian worldview (Fischer, 2010; see also Blanchard & Hodges, 2005). A Christian is called to follow God in all he does but life experiences can be conflicting in dealing with the spiritual and secular context; however, Christ wants his followers to operate within the context of the secular world. True servant-leadership is to emulate how Jesus led those around him - with complete selflessness and by serving others. Moreover, it is challenging for humans to be servant-leaders as they often desire personal recognition in life; yet, dedication to the Word and quiet reflection in God can help one to lead like Jesus. Larry Spears labeled Greenleaf a Grandfather of empowerment movement in business leadership (Greenleaf, 1996) because of his zeal toward servant-leadership. Greenleaf’s viewpoint, though commendable, conflicts with biblical principles. Thus, this paper analyzes Greenleaf’s work from a Christian worldview and institutes a biblical basis for servant leadership. Keywords: servant leadership, biblical perspective, gifts, loving, individual   Introduction Servant-leadership is widely researched and discussed from a secular and Christian worldview (Fischer, 2010; see also Blanchard & Hodges, 2005). Paul encouraged believers to be imitators of Christ in this area when he said "[f]ollow my example, as I follow the example of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1, NIV). Although life can be challenging...

Sharpening Your Leadership

...Chapter 2: SHARPENING YOUR LEADERSHIP 1 It’s a good thing to aspire to leadership, but we must always do a quick heart check. As we consider the kind of leader you need to become, let’s check your motivation for leading others. Appropriate Motives for Leadership 1. Serve Christ “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24 2. Bear fruit in your life “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” John 15:8 3. Keep watch over (shepherd) others “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” Acts 20:28 4. Be an example to the body “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” 1 Peter 5:2-4 5. Use your gifts to serve others “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body...
