... By- Anton Chekhov- Know the author- Anton Pavlovich Chekhov ( 29 January 1860– 15 July 1904) is a major Russian playwright and master of the modern short story. He is a literary artist of concise precision who explored below the surface of life, laying bare the secret motives of his characters.. Concentrating on clear insignificances, they create a special kind of atmosphere, sometimes termed lasting or emotional. Chekhov describes the Russian life of his time using a dishonestly simple technique devoid of prominent literary devices, and he is regarded as the outstanding representative of the late 19th-century Russian realist school. His famous works are: “Three sisters", "The Cherry Orchard", "The Lady with the Dog" and others. SUMMARY The story opens on Christmas Eve with Vanka, a poor orphan of age of nine, sitting down to write a letter to his grandfather living in a unknown village in Russia. After his mother's death Vanka is transferred to new masters in Moscow to live with family of Alyahim the shoemaker. Alyahin and his wife oppress the little orphan, who grows frustrated with the situation and tries to contact his grandfather to ask him for help. As he writes the letter, Vanka recalls his grandfather and his life at the village before he was apprentices to this new home. After the letter is finished, the little boy puts down the name of his grandfather,Konstantin Makarich, and as address he writes down "the village". He is also not aware of the fact that...

...Texting and Driving Is Never Safe When it comes to the topic of texting and driving, most of us will readily agree that it can be a dangerous activity. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of when people should be allowed to use his or her phone while driving. Whereas some are convinced one quick glance at the phone screen will not cause any problems, others maintain that texting and driving causes too many distractions behind the wheel and those distractions can lead to death or serious injuries. The current law in California is that all texting and driving is banned for all drivers, but the law is poorly enforced. My position is that driving and texting is one of the most dangerous activities in America, and needs to be stopped and enforced more strictly; when driving a person should put his or her phone on mute or completely ignore the phone when it rings or vibrates. Texting while driving can to lead to death and injuries from car accidents caused by distracted drivers. According to Cohen Children's Medical Center, more than three thousand teen deaths nationwide are caused by texting and driving. These statistics now show that teen drivers' leading cause of death is texting behind the wheel. It can be seen that many deaths occur because of texting and driving, but those deaths seem so avoidable if drivers just paid more attention to the road. Furthermore, drivers do not truly understand how distracting their phones can be. Drivers cannot give...

...American Dream through Biff’s epiphany, Happy’s delusional success, and Willy’s funeral. While Biff flees Oliver’s office, he comes to a sudden realization that he’s been lying to himself his entire life and that Willy’s outdated version of the American Dream is unachievable for Biff and has caused him to fail. To reiterate this, Miller uses the “sky” (Miller, 1520) as a symbol for Biff’s possibilities. This is ironic, because Biff is running through “the middle of the [office building] and [he saw] the sky” without there being any windows mentioned. The “sky” (1520) that Biff sees isn’t the real sky, but the open-ness and the freedom that it grants. The sky also represents Biff’s chance to escape the web of lies that he has entangled himself in since high school, as its vastness is open and clear. The next way that Biff’s realization shows that the old American Dream has been demolished is that he denounces himself and his father of faking their way through life. As Biff and Willy argue, Biff admits that “[he is] not a leader of men” (1520) and that Willy is not either. While Willy denies this, Biff insists that “[he’s] not bringing home any prizes anymore” (1520) and that Willy needs “to stop waiting for [him] to bring them home” (1520). Biff grasps that he cannot win the game of life in the business world, and that his father must let the dream of his son rising to the top in Corporate America die. Biff knows that the reason he “never got anywhere...

...belts are fastened and ready for takeoff. Aptly and Charr stare absently into space while the latter yawns. Bloss, sitting between them automatically follows the Stewardess’ instructions as she continues telling the passengers to fold away their tables and put their seats in the right position and their mind in a closed one. Aptly glances at Bloss who stops paying attention. More instructions follow, telling people that in case anyone is still conscious, the tone in which the message is spoken might help them lose attention. The message goes on about the card showing aircraft safety procedures and Bloss automatically moves to look for it. Once again, Aptly glances at him and he stops. Yet again, the stewardess informs the passengers to ignore her messages, proclaiming that the failure to do so might result in making one look nervous or inexperienced in the eyes of other travellers. Aptly and Charr open their newspapers and instantly become absorbed in them, as soon as they hear that the cabin attendants, who are not training in mime or the use of theatrical properties, will begin to demonstrate the use of the aircraft’s emergency oxygen masks and life jackets. Seeing as the stewardess tells people to obscure their faces using newspapers and not pay attention to the profoundly embarrassing performance, Bloss quickly follows suit. In the background, the emergency oxygen supply is explained and Bloss sneaks a peek over the top of his newspaper. He does a double take and his mouth...

...mind, of his noble heart, nothing remains nothing but a memory”(94-95). The Intended seemed to worship the ground Kurtz walked on, for she says “‘I would have treasured every sigh, every word, every sign, every glance’” (95). This symbolizes the way the naivety of the Europeans towards the actions that were being made in Africa. The mysterious woman of the Congo is Kurtz’s mistress. She symbolizes the incarnation of Africa and its dark mysteries: “draped in striped and fringed clothes, treading the earth proudly,[...] She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and magnificent; there was ominous and stately in her deliberate progress.[...] The colossal body of the fecund and mysterious life seemed to look at her, pensive, as though it had been looking at the image of its own tenebrous and passionate soul.”( 77-76). The way the mistress is dressed corresponds her role as a mistress and a person of the African continent. As a mistress, she is full of life on the other side she has a dark mysterious life. The passionate kind of life that has vanished from Europe and all the surrounding cities and the mystery life is all the mysteries that are for taking throughout the story. She is what the Europeans needed, the rebirth of new life in each other just like Kurtz needed her to give life to this side of his personality. The wealthy and influential woman is Marlow's aunt. During this time in the European society, there was gender based sexism. “Its queer how out of touch with truth women are....

...Introduction: Shinto, a Japanese based religion, is also considered an ethnic religion. It is so because of the roots of the religion as they connect with Japanese culture and its ability to coexist with other religions, predominately Buddhism (Religions-Shinto at a Glance, 2017 ). It is not a universal religion, as it does not attempt to convert others, nor is it much practiced outside of Japan. It also does not claim to be a religion that attempts to explain the world(Religions-Shinto at a Glance, 2017). Shinto is heavily tied with nature, and has influences of Buddhist significance in some shrines, such as the tori being painted red, a color with significance in mainland China and Buddhism there, rather than orange or black. Shinto is...

...Wow!! I went to see the “Phanatsmatical: Self-Portraits” collection by artist, Anne Harris tonight. I had no idea what her work was like. I called to see if the Memphis College of Art would still be open after 5 because I couldn’t get there before then. I spoke with the assistant to the president of the college and she said she would talk to the security, give him my name, and have him let me in. Her exact words after that were, “We have a beautiful exhibit by Anne Harris on display!” I was so excited that I found a place to go and not only that, but also a fabulous exhibit to do my essay on. When I got there I could see the portraits from a glance. At first glance, I noticed how light the colors were and they all looked to be portraits of a person. They looked pastel and opaque. The paintings were so light in color; they almost seemed to be part of the white wall they were hanging on. Nothing about this exhibit looked interesting to me other than the colors being pretty....

...There are many things that seem to be complete opposites of each other, yet after looking in-depth our immediate conclusion appears to be wrong and the reality is they share many similarities. A popular example of this is the comparison between humans and chimpanzees. At an initial glance, humans seem so far superior to chimpanzees that the difference is at an astronomical level. The concepts, ideas, societies, relationships, technological advances that humans have brought are incomparable to what little chimpanzees have accomplished. Yet as scientists have studied and observed closely, they have noted that in reality we are made of nearly the exact same genetic structure as the chimp, varying in only a 1% difference. This miniscule 1% difference accounts for nearly everything we have considered to make us superior, and yet we are made up of nearly the same genes. This concept also applies to literature. Just because two pieces of literature seem different at first glance does not mean they do not present the same ideas. After looking closer it is evident that they simply take another approach in presenting these ideas. The Cosmic Prison by Loren Eiseley, “A Man Said to the Universe” by Stephen Crane and The Human Being and The Dinosaur by James Thurber contain these connections. An initial connection presented in these pieces of literature is the idea that mankind is above all. Man egotistically believes they are the superior being, and greater in every possible way than the...

...increasing employability through higher education...fact or fiction Introduction Whether you.re a recent graduate or are facing the prospects of looking for a job in the near future, there are many factors to consider before entering the job market. Knowing the kind of job you want, getting yourself prepared for the job market, and presenting yourself as a valuable asset would make it easier to obtain a position that will successfully meet the needs of both you and your employer. With globalization taking place and the employment equity act in force the job market has become rather competitive. Now, a person not only has to compete for a job with the different people from his own community or country but also with the people who emigrate from other countries. So what is it that will distinguish you from all your competitors? This literature review aims at exploring employability and focusing on the link between education and employability to determine whether employability can be increased through higher education. Defining employability A report carried out by Hillage and Pollard (1998) for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) found that. . Employability is about having the ability to acquire initial employment, keeping employment and acquire new employment if required. . For an individual, employability depends upon: 1. Assets in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes, 2. The way these assets are used and deployed, 3. Presentation of assets to potential...

...India in 1903. He is famous for his two novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four (1984). A year later after he was born, his mother brought both him and his sister to England in which his father, a British civil servant stayed in India because he was stationed there. Even as early as a child, he was already battling with the flu and bronchitis although at an early age, he was already into writing. When he got older, he went to school but then was set back a few years for college because his family couldn’t afford it so he ended up joining the Imperial Police Force in 1922. After five years, he resigned and decided to continue his journey as a writer. He came up with his first book Down and Out in Paris and London which was about how life was living in the two cities. He didn’t want to embarrass his family’s name so he decided to use his pseudonym ‘George Orwell’ as the author for his future works. Orwell then wrote about his other experiences overseas, British Colonialism in Burma and part of the country’s Indian empire. In 1937 he married Eileen O'Shaughnessy and then later on went to Spain to battle in the Spanish Civil War. He got badly injured being shot at the neck and arm. After being partially healed, he later on battled another sickness-tuberculosis in 1938. Despite battling his sickness, he still decided to keep writing to support himself. Orwell found himself acting as a propagandist to advance the country's side. He loathed this part of his job and resigned in...

...Associate Level Material Conflicts Are Important Worksheet In this assignment, you must write 300 to 450 words on conflict and conflict management. Record your answers in this worksheet. Part 1: The Five Conflict Types Describe each of the five conflict types using paragraph form. 1. Pseudo conflicts: a. A pseudo conflict is, in actuality, not a real conflict; it is only perceived as such. This type of conflict can occur from two separate causes. The primary cause of pseudo conflicts is inaccurate assumptions. This is when a person forms their own assumptions without assessing the situation; jumping to conclusions. The secondary cause of pseudo conflicts is false dilemmas. This occurs when a person assumes that they only have two solutions to a problem. However, there may be more solutions to that problem that the person is not seeing (Cheesebro, O'Connor, & Rios, 2010, p. 160). 2. Fact conflicts: a. ...development of improbable characters, and his creation of impossible plots…” (Walker). This goes to show that even as far back as the 1800’s, perhaps even farther, that people thought the interpretation of characters in The Last of the Mohicans was “improbable.” Cora Munro’s character is perhaps one of the most improbable. She is far too well-versed in the ways of politics to be a woman in times where women, even those of wealthy families, were only educated in the arts of embroidery, reading, writing, and perhaps basic arithmetic. A woman of Cora Munro’s standing would simply not have the knowledge that she seemed to possess. In addition to Cora Munro’s possession of an unrealistic knowledge for her time, there is also her unrealistic love life. First, there is the Major Duncan Heyward, whose love for Cora is, unfortunately for him, completely unrequited. He has proposed to Cora multiple times, but, though everyone around her agrees with the match, she continues to rebuff his efforts. It is hard for one to imagine that her father would allow this slight, however; parents during this time usually arranged the marriages of their daughters, and Duncan Heyward would have been an ideal choice to Colonel Munro for his daughter. In addition to Duncan, there is also Cora’s unbelievable love affair with Hawkeye, or Nathaniel Poe, the white man that was adopted by the Mohicans. From the moment she sees Hawkeye, she is infatuated with him, and it escalates from there. Their love develops at...

...My Papa's Waltz By Theodore Roethke This poem has a kept form. Even at a glance, it has a set form. It consists of four quatrains, each line being an iambic tritameter. The poem is about a young boy waltzing with his father. One can assume that the speaker is a young boy, or perhaps the poet reminiscing his youth. The father dances around in a haphazard manner, knocking over pans in the kitchen. Upon first glance, the tone is humorous. The picture one immediately forms is rather comical with the boy clinging on for dear life as his chuckling father spins him round and round, making a mess in the kitchen while the mother looks on discontentedly. However, the line, "whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy" suggests the father's drunkedness and "at every step you missed my right ear scraped buckle" suggests the dance was not an altogether joyful one. Lines such as "hung on like death", and "beat time on my head" are might even lead the reader to think the father is abusive of the boy. Indeed, the satirical tone of this poem suggests that the speaker is somewhat critical of his father. The whiskey smell, the roughness, the inconsiderate and reckless actions are under scrutiny. The mother's frowning countenance suggests she too is rather unhappy with the scene. However, the winning tone of the poem is the light and comical one. The constant rhythm throughout the poem gives it a light beat, like a waltz; the reader feels like s/he is dancing. The rhyme pattern of...
