...Summary and Analysis on Lifeboat Ethics In his essay “Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor,” Garrett Hardin focuses on his argument against helping the poor. He argues that poor countries will have a massive population which will overload the environment, the poor are complacent, and also the fact that earth can only support a finite amount of people. Hardin’s argument is convincing because it is based on a known fact; each population requires a specific amount of resources in order to maintain itself, but when the population exceeds this finite number, there will be an insufficient amount of resources. Hardin believes that ignoring poor countries and focusing on wealthy countries will ensure the prosperity for the future. Hardin states the increase in population differs from rich countries and poor countries. In Hardin’s argument, he states that, “As of 1973, the U.S had a population of 210 million people, who were increasing by 0.8 percent per year … another 210 million people (say the combined populations of Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Morocco, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines) who are increasing at a rate of 3.3 percent per year. Put differently, the doubling time for this aggregate population is 21 years, compared to 87 years for the U.S.” as we all know, the earth has a limited amount of resources, this justifies Hardin’s argument of ignoring poor countries (page 2 line11-15). But with Hardin’s argument is a prediction error. Hardin...

...A journey by boat It was Durga Pooja vacation. I had come to my native village with my cousins. As we had no work there, we found the village life very dull. Suddenly an idea struck in my mind and soon we decided to go on a journey by boat. A day was fixed for the journey. The river was not too far. On the fixed day we took our bags and some things to eat and started for the river bank on foot. As we had already hired a boat, we found it ready. The boat was small but it was beautifully decorated. There were two boat-men who instructed us to set properly on both the sides of the boat. It was morning and the sky was clear. A fine cool breeze was blowing. As soon as we took our seats in the boat, it began to move on water. They were really thrilling movements in our life. We all were in high spirit. The' boat was moving gently. The river water was shining in the rays of the sun and was presenting a beautiful scene. It looked white like silver. There were many more boats of different shapes and sizes sailing in the river. There were men, women and children in those boats. The children were very excited and were shouting with joy. All of a sudden the cool breeze stopped blowing and we felt a bit hot. One of my cousins suggested enjoying cold drink which we had brought in our bag. Soon it was midday and we decided to take our lunch. Up to this time we were on the other side of the river. The boatmen tied the boat to the bank and guided us to a restaurant. We took our meals. We enjoyed...

...Tunnel of Love The water flows both ways through the tunnel of love, depending on which rusty lever I force! Like life, this tacky carnival ride with its soggy boats bobbing in a curving trough is not a circle but a figure-eight, or an eighty-eight, that doubles back and gives us second chances to be noble or to wet the seat of our pants. Where the streams cross, with my over-education I can steer the couples through the wide or the narrow entrances to tapered, covered corridors and either squeeze them together or wedge them apart, depending on their fitness for each other—and all for the minimum wage! Take this gentleman for example and his uncertain girlfriend. If I wobble their boat just slightly as they step into it and he steadies her by the shoulder and elbow, his small but certain gesture will beguile her. I could put myself in his place at that moment and she would want even me! On the other hand, if I collide two boats before the tunnel, I can sunder the pair that responds with annoyance—and at the same time cinch the two who share a laugh about it! The two I denounce will smell the mildew from the trapped water of an aging ride that should be condemned. For the two I affirm, ample to themselves, the tunnel and its weeping walls will fade away like other people’s problems. I should be paid what couples counselors get for my discernment! The uninspiring and the doomed I leave alone for the gears of the drive chain to propel toward their insipid certainties, but those...

...My name is Elizabeth. I am 25 now and it has been 10 years since the horrendous night when the Titanic sunk. I stepped out of my car to a sunny spring day. The sky was a clear crystal blue and there were no clouds to be seen. I looked ahead and there it was, ‘the Ship of Dreams’- as they called it. I always heard that it was big but I wasn’t expecting it to be that big! All I could hear were little children screaming with excitement: and all I could see were the thousands of people saying (what they didn’t yet know) their last goodbyes. I walked slowly and anxiously to the ship. A sudden chill of anticipation washed over me as I became just a few steps away from entering the ship. I was going to New York to visit my older sister who was soon to be married. The next thing I heard was my mother calling for me to hurry up onto the ship. I didn’t realise that I had stopped half way up the stairs daydreaming, and was holding up all the contented passengers. I was inside now and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was incredible, like something I’ve never seen before! Everything was so clean and tidy. I could even see my own reflection in the floor! I looked up and it seemed as if there was no ending to the ceiling. The bellboy escorted us up to our deluxe suite, shortly along with our luggage. The room was astounding, far beyond anything I’d ever expected. My four-poster bed sat in the middle of my room with the bathroom and living room on each side. As my mother turned...

...Bottom paints and bottom paints for boats Bottom paint is a covering applied to the lowermost point of a ship (hull) so as to get rid of growing organisms that may attach to the boat especially at the lower parts or to protect the metallic parts of the hull from corrosion. This is done to enhance the vessel's performance and sturdiness. Another added advantage is the improved contact between a free flow mass of water and the hull of a speedy boat enabling the boat to sail at a much faster speed. Modern bottom paints are composed of biocides (chemical substance that hamper growth of marine organisms), organotin compounds and lethal copper. Types of bottom paints SPC (Self polishing copolymers). It contains a resin known as SPC Copolymer. The chemical substance reacts with salt water and the result is the discharge of biocides in the entire life span of the bottom paint. The reaction takes place at any circumstance provided the vessel is in contact with salt water. Controlled Solubility Copolymers These types of bottom paints are partly soluble in water meaning it wears down when water passes across the exterior of the paint. The thickness of the paint reduces at a controlled pace resulting in the release of fresh biocide at the surface of the paint during its active working period. Ablative bottom paints A type of bottom paint that wears away with time when in use hence reducing the preparation and preservation needed when applying more bottom paints...

...It was Friday the 15th. I got up early and there was a sun shining outside my window. I cut school. I thought the best thing to do is to go to the river with my friends. When I was going outside I saw a black cat crossing my path. I've already known that this day isn't going to be one of the bests in my life. Later it turned out that my worst fears were realized. I bought a bus ticket. When I got to the bus stop and I understood that I'm late, it really put me out of humour. Me and my friend decided to go on foot. It was a really hot day. After we had arrived to the river, I saw that I forgot my swimming trunks. Even though there's heat, water was cold and it's impossible to swim there without trunks so I decided to sit in the shade. I didn't feel to play football or voleyball. There's a place where we can rent a canoe or kayak near the river. I heard that there's cheap. And it really is! It's only 4$ per hour. I didn't think long and 5 minutes later I decided to boat down the river. But unfortunately bad luck was chasing me. After I had boated about 100 feets, the sun set, it starded raining. I knew I had to go back but boating upstream was really taft. I reached the land and I was walking alongshore having my canoe on tow. I had had (?) enough of it! In a minute I was failing (loosing power, is 'failing' correct?). Rain was even bigger than a few moments later. When I reached the harbour I was tired out and drenched to the skin. In a hurry I gave back a canoe. There's no-one...

...In any type of moral class, the topic of ethics is always a topic of choice early on in the semester because it is the back bone of most discussions. In the lecture regarding utilitarianism, we spoke about life boat ethics and how essentially, humans, want to chose the outcome with the greatest good for the greatest number of subjects. This example of life boat ethics, or utilitarianism, is a more sophisticated form of hedonism, but it shows that the term hedonism relates to simply the positive or negative outcomes. On a more higher level scale, Bentham states that value hedonism is, “only states of pleasure have positive intrinsic value and only states of pain have intrinsic negative value; anything else of value is mere extrinsic value”...
