1. What catastrophe or apocalypse has caused changes to life, culture and community in this dystopia?
According to a speech by one of the characters, “Decades ago our ancestors realized that it is not political ideology, religious belief, race, or nationalism this is to blame for a warring world. Rather, they determined that it was the fault of the human personality of humankind’s inclination toward evil, in whatever form that is. They divided into factions that sought to eradicate those qualities they believed responsible for the world’s disarray.” (Roth, 42) In short, it was our constant state of war that eventually led to this form of dystopian life. “Those who blamed aggression formed Amity. She has her goal of passing initiation, and becoming a member of Dauntless society without blowing her cover. She has her mission into Dauntless headquarters to destroy the database that is allowing Jeanine to control the soldiers. She manages to complete every task that is set out in front of her, because no matter how close she gets to giving up, or being defeated, she doesn’t let that deter her. She knows that it doesn’t matter if everyone else write her off. She needs to keep moving forward because she still has it in her. The fight isn’t over till she says it.
