...In The Death and Life of Great American Cities Jane Jacobs is concerned with the problems of city planning and the strategy that planners followed in the year of 1961. Jacobs provides a good analysis of what contributes to the success of neighborhoods by looking at city streets and sidewalks, parks and neighborhoods. She explained that the street is the essential public space of a city providing safety and also allows for a healthy level of informal human contact, balancing between the need for privacy and the need for community. A high ratio of adults and enough sidewalk space allows children to play freely, relieves some of the burdens and costs of parenting. Small parks can benefit an already vibrant neighborhood, but they must fit their context. Out of place or excessively large parks interrupt street life and denigrate its safety. Underused parks can be redeemed by specializing in a certain service or activity. It is most effective, politically and socially, to consider cities in three senses: as whole cities, as neighborhoods, and as districts, each with different needs and strategies. Jacobs argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of most city-dwellers. Jacobs is well known for organizing grassroots efforts to protect existing neighborhoods from, "slum clearance," and particularly for her opposition to Robert Moses in his plans to overhaul her neighborhood of Greenwich Village. She is responsible for the eventual cancellation of the Lower Manhattan Expressway...

...HIS- Early Western Civilization 1 December 2009 A Look into the Life of Alexander the Great Today Alexander the Great is known as one of the greatest conquerors and warriors in history. He created the largest land empire in Western history second to Rome. Unlike modern generals, Alexander actually fought in battles. He usually led the troops himself, making him a hero to his men. He never lost a battle, though wounded a few times, and always successfully fought the battle. Alexander was born in Pella, Macedon on July 20, 356 BC. He was the son of Philip II, the King of Macedon and Philip's fourth wife Queen Olympias (Burgan, 16). After his birth his nurse, Lanike, raised Alexander. When Alexander was thirteen years old, his father decided that he needed a higher education and he began to search for a tutor. He chooses Aristotle to be his tutor, and agreed to rebuild his hometown of Stagira, which Philip has razed years earlier. From the age of 14 to 18, he studied military affairs and improved his horse riding skills. He also worked on his strength by wrestling and gymnastics (Wikipedia, 2). At the age of sixteen, his time with Aristotle came to an end. Philip had to go wage war against Byzantium and left Alexander as regent in charge of the kingdom. Under this role, Alexander was to serve as the head of the government while his father fought wars with the Greeks (Burgan, 25-26). During this time, a riot broke out in Macedonian. He assigned...

...F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of the most prominent authors of the last century. Famous for works like “This Side of Paradise”, “Tender Is the Night” and a number of other short stories, novellas and novels, he is often inspired by his own personal life and experience. A considerable part of his pieces tackle questions regarding social status, rise to power and how they correlate to love and “The Great Gatsby” is one of them. This particular novel takes place in the year 1922 in New York and the fictional villages of East and West Egg and is seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, a writer and not particularly successful bonds salesman. It tells the story of the affair (and the events preceding it) of Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby but also includes...

...Business source complete Great Eastern Life Assurance this week became the first Asian insurance company outside Australia or Japan to sell a subordinated bond. The Singaporean borrower raised S$400m ($310.5m) in a deal that bankers hope will encourage regulators across Asia to let insurers turn to the debt markets to shore up their capital positions. Singapore is rare among Asian countries in having explicit capital regulations for insurance companies that allow the use of various forms of debt, as well as equities, to function as capital. But no issuer had tested the regulations before, and the lead managers held long discussions with the Monetary Authority of Singapore while they were structuring the deal. One of the points under discussion was whether the coupons needed to be deferrable -- something that would strengthen the bond's function as capital, but would have made the deal a tougher sell to investors. "It was more investor friendly to make coupons non-deferrable and we had to debate that point a bit with the MAS," Tony Cheong, group chief financial officer at Great Eastern Life Assurance told EuroWeek Asia. "But this is a common structure for banks. You will likely see the capital requirements of banks and insurance companies move closer and closer together, so it made sense." The issuer and its bankers won that argument, allowing Great Eastern to sell a S$400m 15 year non-call 10 bond with non-deferrable coupons. The bond got around S$1.2bn of demand, allowing...

... 5 Summary 8 Reference 10 Abstract In this paper I will critically evaluate the statement “Organizations seek to control” from both mechanistic and culture perspective, using my own placement experience in Great Eastern Life Assurance (Singapore) as an example to examine the extent of compatibility and conflict between these two perspectives in the sense of control. Introduction Control is a set of activities to determine an actual state of affairs, compare it to appropriate models, and then formulate conclusions which should contribute to assure efficient and effective functioning of an organization. A mechanistic view of organizations assumes that organizations operate in a consistent machine-like manner. Control in mechanisms perspective, primarily aimed at detecting irregularities. A culture view of organizations treats organizations as mini societies which have a system of strongly-held shared value among members. Control by corporate culture views people as emotional, symbol-loving, and needing to belong to a superior entity or collectivity. Great Eastern Life Assurance provides an interesting case study in mechanism and culture perspectives for third primary reasons: First, its structure is highly formalized; have clear, well-defined, centralized, vertical hierarchies of command, authority, and control; nearly all processes and procedures have been administratively...

...In a city full of prospective strangers, consistently active streets and sidewalks create a safer urban environment and a more comfortable as well as secure neighborhood. As said by Jane Jacobs “there must be eyes upon the street”(Jacobs 35). In her book “The Death and Life of Great American Cities”, Jacobs dives deeper into the concept of eyes upon the street as she describes those eyes as “natural proprietors”(35), speaking of their importance in relation to the sidewalk and the safety of an urban community. In the text Jacobs points out how cities are reflections of their streets and sidewalk, thus “if a city’s streets are safe from barbarism and fear, the city is thereby tolerably safe from barbarism and fear.”(30). Ever since we are...

...Strengths The first defined Vietnamese fast food chain in Vietnam Fast food culture was initially imported to Vietnam in 1994 with the birth of the first restaurant named Chicken Texas on Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, Saigon. Gradually, a queue of foreign fast food jumbos have landed onto Vietnam and dominated the market with the everyday-seen names like KFC, Lotteria, Jollibee…They have helped shape up fast food culture with western style in the country that has been globally emerging at an amazing speed . A critical question is then raised that why we do not have pure Vietnamese fast food mode for Vietnamese people. Later, some Vietnamese brand names were with great effort introduced like Pho 24, Kinh Do Bakery, Wrap and Roll… However, insiders do not consider these names typical fast food vein. Mr. Truong Han Lam, Marketing Director of Lotteria commented that Kinh Do Bakery business was not a fast food model. Mr. Ly Qui Trung –Founder of Pho 24- added that the existing Vietnamese names were following a quick service mode, not fast food form. Owner of Wrap and Roll, Ms Kim Oanh, admitted that hers was a restaurant form, not fast food (”KFC, Lotteria, Jollibee,” 2012). In order to answer the question if there are any real Vietnamese fast food models, a definition of fast food needs being made clear. According to Oxford dictionary, fast food is an “easily prepared processed food served in snack bars and restaurants as a quick meal or to be taken away”...

...Colonizers: Great Britain in Jamestown “Life and Death at Jamestwon” INTRODUCTION “There it comes!” In May of 1607, there was the arrival of the first white settlers in Jamestown, Virginia. Virginia Company, a group of entrepreneurs from London, funded the explorers. Three ships namely Susan Constant, Godspeed, and the Discovery were used to transport the 104 men and women who left England to look for greener pastures in North America. Half of the settlers aboard the three ships were mostly “gentlemen” and some others from upper classes who do not know how to find a way to save their own lives. As soon as the colonists arrived at Jamestown On May 13, 1607, their expectations were immediately cut short since this group was met by rampant diseases, internal political struggle, as well as attacks from the native Indians. The initial instruction for the colonialist was to ensure that they have located a site that was not near the coasts to ensure an avoidance of Spanish warships, Virginia Council's primary concern. The relationship with Powhatan Indians were a major worry of the England Settlers. Because of the environmental issues at Jamestown, the English settlers had to establish their relations with native Powhatan Indians. Moreover, there were also some Indians who were hospitable to the first settlers, others were very hostile and would discharge them with arrows. After constructing rudimentary fort as well as witnessing Indian attacks, the white settlers realized that they...
