...RUNNING HEAD: LSI Paper I am charged with the task of completing the Life Styles Inventory Survey to give a self-description of my thinking styles. The purpose of this assignment is to determine the impact that the personal styles have on my management style and to identify which one of my thinking styles may be reducing my overall effectiveness. After completing the survey, my circumplex shows that my primary thinking style is the “Conventional Style”(4 o’clock) and my backup thinking style is the “Power Style” (8 o’clock). I agree with the results of the conventional thinking style, but, I do not fully agree with the results of the power thinking style. According to the LSI results, the conventional thinking style is one that measures our inclination to act in a compliant way. Conventional thinkers worry about adhering to rules and established procedures. According to the LSI results, when we depend on on established procedures in determining how we do things, we risk losing our sense of uniqueness and individuality. I would have to agree with the results of this survey that I am a conventional thinker. As a child, my parents had very strict household rules that, simply, were not to my benefit to break. Therefore, I often abided by the rules. I think this is why I tend to do things strictly by the book. Doing things by the book gives me a sense of security in knowing that I followed the policy, in case something goes wrong. As a conventional thinker, I prefer...

...GM591 PREPARATION GUIDE: LIFE STYLES INVENTORY(LSI) Introduction: Thinking and Behavior "The quest for leadership is first an inner quest to discover who you are” (p.391).[1] --Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner--- Self-awareness is foundational to effective leadership and organization success[2]. Research in leadership and organizational behavior indicates that managers who are blind to who they are, and to the effects they have on other people in their organizations, place their effectiveness and their careers at risk. A frequently cited axiom is "the first commandment of leadership is to know thyself." For example, in their studies of managerial and executive derailment, the Center for Creative Leadership found that successful managers: (1) understand their values, personal styles, and strengths and weaknesses; (2) know the impact of these values, styles, and strengths and weaknesses on their ability to effectively work with others and achieve their goals; and (3) are quick to reflect upon and learn from their own experiences. Despite these advantages, we often resist opportunities to increase our self-awareness or to acknowledge error. We fear that learning something new about ourselves will be painful -- doing so may require us to change our treasured and habitual ways of seeing, thinking, and behaving. Self-awareness is also an important barometer to ensure that even the best leadership practices don't become destructive. As Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner caution...

...Running Head: LSI – LIFE STYLES INVENTORTY 1 LSI – Life Styles Inventory DeVry College – Keller Graduate School of Management GM591 Overall, I was rather surprised at the results from my LSI – Life Styles Inventory. I believe I openly and candidly responded to the questionnaire, but none the less am both surprised by a portion of the interpretation of my personality, while other aspects of the interpretation are really spot on. I will review my primary and secondary thinking styles as revealed by the LSI, along with one limiting style. I will also discuss how these styles have an impact on my potential management styles, and my personal styles. Even though I may not like to admit the accuracy of the LSI results I find they are shockingly accurate. As I have spent the past couple of days reviewing the result and contemplating the interpretation it has opened my eyes. As shown in my LSI Circumplex my primary style is The Oppositional Style. This trait is found in the 7 o’clock position of the LSI Circumplex and is defined as “…scale measures our tendency to use the defensive and aggressive strategy of disagreeing with others, and to seek attention by being critical and cynical.” (Human Synergistics Inc, 2010). This is not a style that I had thought I would be so strongly tied to, however when reviewing the generalized characteristics of the style I found myself in agreement with the summary. I often tend to 1) ask tough probing questions, 2) have a sarcastic...

...According to the circumplex, my “primary” thinking style is conventional and my “backup” thinking style is dependent. I respect the feelings and opinions of people because that is their entitlement. I want to be respected, so therefore in return I give respect. I am a very reliable and steady person. I am consistent in all that I do. From day to day I have people that rely on me to make sure that the organization that I work for is operated properly. In the workplace, I have parents that rely on me to make sure that their children and kept safe. They place their trust in me knowing that their child will be cared for by qualified staff. I have staff that rely on me to make sure that they are given the necessary tools to perform their duties. When it comes to my “back up” style of dependent, I am very tactful when it comes to they way I say an do things in which not to offend others. ...Life Styles Inventory: Self-Description GM591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Instructor: Christine Rainwater Ada Freeman afreex4@yahoo.com March 11, 2010 Abstract This paper explains the current way I think and behave using the results of the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) as defined by Human Synergistics International’s LSI Circumplex. The resource maintains that there are three major “life styles” traits. The first is the constructive styles which depict synergy and helps validate why certain individuals, groups, and organizations are particularly effective in performance, growth, and work quality. The second is the passive/defensive style which can produce a predictable and secure situation, however, learning, the ability to adapt and the organization’s survival is hampered. The third is the aggressive/defensive which may lead to stress, decisions are often based on status as opposed to experience and conflict instead of a team effort. Keywords: life styles inventory (LSI), constructive, passive/defensive, aggressive/defensive As I reviewed the LSI Styles Circumplex after the Life Styles Inventory, I could immediately see that some of my results for the behaviors were right on the mark. Others I felt were a bit off the chart but no results seem completely off the chart. After reviewing how the scores were calculated, I began to understand some of the inter-relations between the styles and my corresponding behaviors and beliefs. My...

...Running head: EMPATHIZING THE DYNAMICS Empathizing the dynamic challenge Jasmine M. Rivera Keller Graduate School ABSTRACT Knowing my behavior personalities and how I manage effectively are vital styles of mundane life because of it’s informational efficiency and consistent characteristic observation. In this study I have found that most of my styles were accurate. Not realizing that my personality traits hinder me from successfully furthering my thought process, thus affecting my progress to grow. Understanding my circumplex style will enable me to become more effective when managing my thought process in today’s society. I will implement my values, personal style from my weakness to my strengths. This paper explores my circumplex survey that was conducted online on which consisted of my personal thinking style. Personal thinking styles are significant to perceptions of everyday life. My primary personal style was passive defensive style and avoidance was my highest expressive style. My primary style avoidance is manifested through my life and work practically. When I'm at work, as soon as I clock in, I go directly to my designated room and fulfill my job description as the teen coordinator. In the workplace I tend to have difficulty establishing relationships with Co-workers from past experience. I'm not a very cordial person. Me being able to communicate more openly to others takes time of getting to know a person. I tend to be very independent...

...Personal Thinking Styles: The Life Style Inventory assignment gave me a chance to see on paper how my thinking styles influence my ability to deal with most situations. The Life Style Survey guides individuals to gain insight into their own self development and personality along with the type of behaviors we exercise to others as well. By completing the survey, I have a better understanding on how I can constructively deal with conflicts as an individual. Furthermore, the survey helps us take a look on the positive and negative qualities of our own personalities and different ways we build and improve upon them. According to my LSI results, my primary style was a tie between humanistic-encouraging and self-actualizing which falls under the Constructive Styles. Constructive Style reflects a healthy balance of people and task-related concerns and promotes the fulfillment of higher order needs (Our Measurement Model - The Circumplex, 2010). Humanistic-Encouraging is at the one o’clock position. It reveals the growth and development of people, a high positive regard for them and sensitive to their needs (Our Measurement Model - The Circumplex, 2010). This type of style describes me so well because I am willing to help others, encourage others, and understanding. When I look at my personal and professional life, this is exactly how I view myself. My family and friends have describes me as a leader who is thoughtful and considerate of everyone. I tend to agree with them...

...Personal Thinking Styles My primary style according to the circumplex is competitive. I have always strived to be the best at everything I take up. It should be noted that I answered the LSI survey with a perspective of an individual who applies technical knowledge to get his day to day tasks done rather than from a perspective of a manager who needs to work in more social setting. My competitiveness is more focused within my capabilities and I try to improve on them instead of comparing myself with others and trying to do better than them. Even when I try to do better than other people as well, I do not want them to perform badly in order for me to perform better. I think that fact is highlighted by my high score in humanistic-encouraging style. Also, I do not get discouraged if someone else does better than me. I think it is more healthy part of the competition that I focus on so my competitive thinking style in practice represents achieving style. At work I work hard to finish a task faster than the last time I did a similar task. I make available for others to use the tools and components that facilitate this for me and educate them about the factors that were previously limiting our progress so that they can perform better as well. My backup style is perfectionistic. I try to do things right. However I do not do this to seek someone’s attention but mainly because of my still idealistic beliefs and my satisfaction of accomplishment. I assess a goal, determine limitations...

...The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) Paper MGMT 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior Introduction The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) presents a series of questions in the areas of personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships and then collates participant responses into a circumplex identifying 12 specific patterns or styles of thinking, behaving and interacting on a personal, management and leadership level--representing the essence of an individual's effectiveness. The circumplex provides a visual description of an individual's thinking and behaviour and then compares results with those of other individuals having taken the inventory in order to create self-awareness of strengths and weakness in order to create awareness of constructive behaviour. The norming base for the LSI represents nearly 10,000 individuals from various organizations, ages, levels of education and from both genders. The results plotted on the circumplex a divided into areas defined by higher order and lower order needs of satisfaction and security; and task-centered and people-centered orientations. Within these spheres are 12 separate styles (approval, conventional, dependent, avoidance, oppositional, power, competitive, perfectionistic, achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging, and affiliative) which are subsequently grouped into three specific patterns (achievement/dependent; self-actualizing/avoidance; humanistic-encouraging/oppositional;...
