Personal Thinking Styles
My primary style according to the circumplex is competitive. I have always strived to be the best at everything I take up. It should be noted that I answered the LSI survey with a perspective of an individual who applies technical knowledge to get his day to day tasks done rather than from a perspective of a manager who needs to work in more social setting. My competitiveness is more focused within my capabilities and I try to improve on them instead of comparing myself with others and trying to do better than them. Even when I try to do better than other people as well, I do not want them to perform badly in order for me to perform better. I think that fact is highlighted by my high score in humanistic-encouraging style. Also, I do not get discouraged if someone else does better than me. I think it is more healthy part of the competition that I focus on so my competitive thinking style in practice represents achieving style.
At work I work hard to finish a task faster than the last time I did a similar task. I make available for others to use the tools and components that facilitate this for me and educate them about the factors that were previously limiting our progress so that they can perform better as well.
My backup style is perfectionistic. I try to do things right. However I do not do this to seek someone’s attention but mainly because of my still idealistic beliefs and my satisfaction of accomplishment. I assess a goal, determine limitations surrounding it and only take it up if it’s realistic, or if possible, make it realistic by trimming it down. Within these boundaries then I believe that it can be done in a perfect manner and I strive to achieve that. Usually I do expect similar behavior from others and I think that explains my low score in affiliative style.
At my current project I complete each software component with utmost care to have no bugs. So far I have been successful at keeping this number to minimum by rigorously unit-testing and finding and removing those bugs myself rather than letting them propagate to testing team. However I do not get downed if a bug is found in my work because I know “to err is human…”
Probably due to my perfectionistic approach I tend to work less with other people. I am approving of other people and do encourage and help them as much as possible but I do believe that I can do a task better myself than having to share it with another person. This is one of the reasons that affiliative style is my weakness in the circumplex.
I would like to improve the affiliative style of thinking by increasing my communication with other people. Instead of looking for a perfect solution from them for a problem at hand I would analyze it from their perspective and learn from it as it might have something better to offer that I could not think of in the past. A solution that is not ‘done right the first time’ must have a lot of other things to offer, like more reliability, finding and choosing the best approach to the problem, etc. I can definitely increase team productivity and create more opportunities for me to learn from others if I improve on this style.

Impact on Management Style
a. Planning
In general, I think I am a good planner. I accept tougher than average tasks after analyzing them to make sure they are still realistic given the level of resources that will be used to accomplish them. If a task handed over is unrealistic to be finished within given time, I either try to make it realistic by adjusting the product owner’s expectations or respectfully reject the task in favor of quality of work and achievement. This is reflected by oppositional style in my circumplex. This interpretation of oppositional is a little different than one given in LSI evaluation probably because (as mentioned earlier) I answered most answers from a mindset of an individual working in a managed team rather than that of a manager. I am generally opposed to negative things imposed by superiors rather than accepting them as is. However I do not do that to positive/correct things or to get any attention.
As reflected by score in approval style, I seek opinion of others for task at hand. I believe that can be very useful if applied in the planning phase of a project to put a good plan in place.

b. Organizing
My organizing skills are not that great. I believe that is mainly because of lack of time- and task-management. From my past work experience, I think usually I tend to focus on the task that is most challenging and interesting rather than prioritizing tasks with respect to time. Then to achieve it in the shortest period of time and in a close to perfect manner, I would give up other things like my personal time. This might work just fine especially from the perspective of getting the job done but this approach can cause problems when keeping a team organized. My low affiliative score might also affect this further.

c. Leading
By combining achievement style with humanistic-encouraging style I can prove to be a good leader by educating team members on how to achieve goals and by removing any hurdles in the process. Also as my oppositional score is in lower part of medium range (and by further improving it) I can be more welcoming of team members’ ideas and utilize them to be a better guide by keeping the team closer to the state they want to be in while working towards the goals. At the same time, oppositional style will enable me to keep a check on the quality of work produced. In my work experience, I believe I have been able to utilize this behavior to lead small teams of developers to get up to speed and deliver the software on schedule although I did not make bonds that would last beyond work, probably another reflection of my low score in affiliative style.

d. Controlling
The high score in power style and humanistic-encouraging denote that I can use these effectively in controlling a team while steering them towards success by keeping the collective focus on goals as shown by self-actualizing and achievement style scores. Perfectionistic style score may also help here but that can also be dangerous because that style of thinking can stress and isolate individuals inside the team even though the job at hand might still get done effectively.

Genesis of Personal Styles
I think my circumplex shows high scores in achievement, competitive and perfectionsitic styles because that is how I was brought up. I get my inspiration from my parents especially my father who is a computer programmer himself and I think has these characteristics. He demanded the same from me primarily in the academics and in the field of computers. I also used to get inspired by teachers who had similar qualities and probably that is where I adopted these styles of thinking. My high score in humanistic-encouraging style also comes from interaction with family particularly my siblings.
I believe that high score in avoidance does not reflect my thinking style. I do not believe in running away from a problem however small or big it may be. I believe that a problem not addressed at the earliest will grow bigger and come back to haunt. I have always enjoyed taking on challenges and risks in life. Maybe it’s more of a reflection of my short-term behavior.
At first, I was a little surprised at getting a high score at dependent thinking style. In general I am very independent of people. For example, in school I usually did not participate in group study sessions or seek help in assignments from fellow students (may not be a good thing but maybe that was due to my shyness). Also at work I take up and finish the tasks of other team members when they are busy rather then making the completion of my task dependent on their availability. However, to solve a problem I depend heavily on tools and resources like books, computer programs etc. Later though when I did think about it and saw that I do indirectly depend on people by using the tools they developed, it does justify a high score in dependent style.

Conclusion and Reflection
This has been a tremendous exercise in getting an insight on my personality and thinking styles. The knowledge gained from it will help me to become a better person in general and an effective leader in particular.

Whenever I used to think if I can be a leader, I would only think about my relations to people and how well can I control them. After going through this exercise I got introduced to many other dimensions in one’s way of thinking that can directly impact one’s leadership skills. My doubts that my social skills will be a hurdle in my team management endeavors were validated. Also I did get an idea of where I stand on other thinking styles and so that now I know that I need to improve on styles like affiliative, perfectionistic, competitive, self-actualizing and conventional. I believe using GM591 I can achieve that so I become a better, effective team manager who can do more than just getting tasks accomplished in an efficient manner.

...The LSI which is stands for life styles inventory is a test that measures how you think and behave. When I took the test and received my scores I was shocked with some of the results that I got, and I thought to myself there is no way that some of these words are describing me and definitely not in the percentile that I placed into for example, avoidance I never would consider myself as a person who avoids anything whether it is something good or bad. However, when I studied my results some more I realized that the test is measuring all the parts of a person’s personality, so no matter what you would have to place somewhere Part 1: Personal Thinking Styles My primary thinking style is affiliative. I scored a percentile score of 90. The affiliative thinking style is a part of the constructive styles. The constructive style is described to reflect self-enhancing thinking and behavior that add to a person’s satisfaction. Another characteristic is building healthy relationships and work efficiently with others. My second highest thinking style is oppositional. This thinking style is a part of the Aggressive and Defensive style. Some characteristics are the ability to keep ones position or status and also maintain a sense of security. I would have to agree with this assessment that affiliative and oppositional are my primary and backup thinking style. The ability to build healthy relationships whether it be at work, school, or personally is a very important trait to have. It is...

Human Synergistics (2007), the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) is based around the Human Synergistics Circumplex, describing constructive, passive/defensive and aggressive/defensive behaviors. The personal LSI profile dictates that I exemplify a constructive style of behavior. Attributes of a constructive style are Achievement, Self-Actualization, Humanistic-Encouraging, and Affiliative. My primary style is Humanistic-Encouraging, LSI (2007), it reflects an interest in the growth and development of people, a high positive regard for them and sensitivity to their needs. People high in this style devote energy to coaching and counseling others, are thoughtful and considerate and provide people with support and encouragement. My backup is Affiliative, LSI (2007) it reflects an interest in developing and sustaining pleasant relationships. People high in this style share their thoughts and feelings, are friendly and cooperative and make others feel a part of things. This is truly accurate. They are equally manifested in my life. No matter the place nor time, I make the needs of others a priority. I am a firm believer of treating others as you want to be treated. My Affiliative backup style is also limiting for my kindness is at times taken for weakness. This happens more at home more than in the workplace. My work past and present work history validates my LSI profile. Exemplifying this constructive style has benefited me...

Life Styles Inventory

...After taking the Life Styles Inventory survey, my results indicated the Passive /Defensive styles which represent self-protecting thinking and behavior promoting the fulfillment of security needs through interactions with people, as the primary personal thinking style. There are four styles under that heading, including Approval, Dependent, Conventional and Avoidance. According to the approval style, one is likely to seek approval from others, feel the need to be liked by everyone and think in terms of what others think instead of forming its own thoughts. On the other hand, under dependent style, you tend to be a good follower by seeking help from others or doing what is expected from them. Being eager to please and getting easily influenced by friends and family are also signs of the dependency style. A person closely relating to the conventional style is very respectful to others, is highly reliable and steady along with believing in rules more than ideas itself. Lastly, avoidance style takes on being uneasy, self-depreciative and lacks self-confidence. Personally, some of the pointers from these brief styles I mentioned above relate to me on a high level. I feel the need to seek approval from others and I am not dependent on my friends as such but my behavior weighs heavy on how people surroundings are behaving with me. I’ve realized, often times when I am discussing my daily routine with a close friend, I talk about my colleagues or other friends that I’ve interacted...

...PERSONAL THINKING STYLES After completion of the Life Styles Inventory Assessment, it was determined that my primary thinking style is oppositional. I ranked in the 87th percentile in this category. An oppositional person tends to disagree with others and seek attention by being critical and cynical. Some of the characteristics of an oppositional individual are asking probing questions, being argumentative, having a negative attitude, and a sarcastic sense of humor. I was actually shocked with these results, but realized the more I read the descriptions that I actually possess some of the characteristics listed. Some of the attributes of the oppositional individual that I have are asking the probing questions, looking for flaws, and sometimes having a negative attitude. These characteristics manifest in both my every day and work life. I tend to ask the questions to make sure I understand what is going on and to make sure that the decisions being made have been thought through. At the same time I am asking the questions, I am looking for the flaws, trying to figure out why the decision being made will not work or what could possibly go wrong. Both of the previous stated characteristics can lead to the portrayal of being negative. My secondary thinking style is achievement and I totally agree with this conclusion. I ranked in the 85th percentile in this area. I was surprised that this was not my primary style. The achievement style indicates attaining high quality results...

The LSI feedback explained the Passive styles (dependent) to be self-protective and courageous, controlling and has the ability to encourage and motivate others to achievements. The Aggressive style (perfectionist) focuses on fulfilling security through task-related activities. According to the “LSI” My primary thinking style is considered as a “Perfectionist”. This means, I am aggressive, dedicated, time conscious, organized and a detailed person with high standards. I do not settle for anything less than perfection. I totally agree with LSI definition about my characteristic of valuing my work more than my relationship with the people around me. I am fast in everything I do and gets things done right away. This characteristic is genetic because it can be traced down to my father and grandfather. Also, due to my competitive nature, I get upset very easily when I feel I am been cheated or people are been dishonest to me. According to LSI, dedication, focus, and self-discipline leads to performance accomplishments and; since achievement and satisfaction are directly related, I know understand why I work hard and strive for great achievement at all times...

An Affiliative leader will promote harmony among the followers and helps solve conflict. He builds teams by making sure the followers feel connected to each other. I completely agree that I’m affiliative in nature. In the school days, if any fellow classmate would have difficulty in understanding a particular subject, I would stay back at school and try my best to make him understand the subject or have active discussions with my teacher to make him understand it better. Be at home, I would always participate in family discussions and try my level best to give suggestions...

...Life Styles Inventory: Self-Description GM591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Instructor: Christine Rainwater Ada Freeman afreex4@yahoo.com March 11, 2010 Abstract This paper explains the current way I think and behave using the results of the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) as defined by Human Synergistics International’s LSI Circumplex. The resource maintains that there are three major “life styles” traits. The first is the constructive styles which depict synergy and helps validate why certain individuals, groups, and organizations are particularly effective in performance, growth, and work quality. The second is the passive/defensive style which can produce a predictable and secure situation, however, learning, the ability to adapt and the organization’s survival is hampered. The third is the aggressive/defensive which may lead to stress, decisions are often based on status as opposed to experience and conflict instead of a team effort. Keywords: life styles inventory (LSI), constructive, passive/defensive, aggressive/defensive   As I reviewed the LSI Styles Circumplex after the Life Styles Inventory, I could immediately see that some of my results for the behaviors were right on the mark. Others I felt were a bit off the chart but no results seem completely off the chart. After reviewing how the scores were calculated, I began to understand some of the inter-relations between the styles and my corresponding behaviors and beliefs. My...

...LIFE STYLE INVENTORY The life styles inventory is a survey of questions that help us to see our own personality and what type of behaviors we have on others. Also, it helps us to look at the positive and negative qualities of our personalities and ways to improve upon them. The LSI Style Profile helps to identify ones perception on how they reflect and behave in work involved circumstances.   The profile is broken up into three style categories. 1. Constructive Styles:   Reflects self-enhancing thinking and behavior that contributes to one’s level of satisfaction, ability to develop healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks. 2. Passive/Defensive Style:   Represents self- protecting thinking and behavior that promote the fulfillment of security needs through iteration with people. 3.   Aggressive/Defensive Style:   Reflect self-promotion thinking and behavior used to maintain one’s status position and fulfill security needs through task-related. Part 1: Personal Thinking Styles (primary, backup, limiting) “Primary” Thinking Styles According to my LSI profile , my primary style is conventional. Mostly people who have conventional style feel that they want to see everything unchanged .Conventional people feel that they are traditional and they like to know exactly what is expected of them in every situation. They are practical and very structured. Conventional people might be good at science like math ,but they may...

...LIFESTYLE INVENTORY PAPER MEMORANDUM Date: November 6, 2011 Subject: Life Style Inventory Paper As per your request to prepare a personal learning agenda in GM591, I have completed my own “Life Styles Circumplex” profile. Below is the analysis of my “Life Styles Circumplex” profile and my personal learning agenda in GM591. Part I:  Issues and Events The biggest challenge I face in the wholesale/retail industry (previous job) is dealing with people from all works of life. It is interesting to note that during the course of the month, at work, I will come across someone that will do or say something that will almost get me upset and in some cases succeed in getting me upset. I have read books that address issues like anger management, customer service and good people skills. I usually exercise good self-control in these areas. Another issue I deal with is trust. Over the years, I have found it increasing difficult to trust people, especially customers. There is an adage in the automotive retail industry that says, “Customers are liars.” The third main issue is discernment of people and their motives for doing and saying certain things. I continuously strive to be more holistic and well-rounded in all areas of my life. I am aware of the dangers of anger, distrust and naivety when they become the dominant part of one’s life, even if it is for a brief period. If these issues are not addressed, they can destroy one’s life, job or other vital relationships, especially the business-client...

...The Life Style Inventory (LSI), as shown above, depicts my highest score as Avoidance. I didn’t expect that characteristic is so high. The Avoidance style of thinking reveals an individual’s tendency to be apprehensive and self-protective. This mean people with such a style of thinking are eager to stay away from risk. I do not find myself to be aggressive when dealing with individuals. I tend to listen more to what people say. So this result wasn’t new to me but I was surprised that this score is highest one. This is also one of my limiting style I guess. And this result made me realized I need to work on my communication skills. If I am unable to express my feeling and my thoughts it is really difficult for another to respond me. Humanistic-Encouraging is my back up thinking style with a percentile 75%. I didn’t surprise this characteristic to be my highest score. This is characterized by seeing the good in everyone, being a good listener, having a genuine concern for others, and believing that I can help to improve, guide or support someone’s efforts. This describes me perfectly in both my professional and personal life. For instance, enjoyed working as customer service agent for airlines company because I allowed the customers to vent their problems, found solutions to their problems and it also gave me a sense of actualization when I was able to help someone by answering questions, directing them to the correct ways. Also I need to work on journalize skills so that I can...

...GM591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior LIFE STYLES INVENTORY When proceeding with this life style survey, I was convinced that my “primary” style and/or my “back up” style will be far transparent from being Conventional and Oppositional. Moreover, in reviewing more in depth towards the final results, some of the outcomes are not exactly what I was expecting. In areas I thought should have resulted in a superlative score it barely met expectation in my scheme of things. Conventional-oriented has been revealed to be my “primary” style as the scoring was in the 98 percentile. I am by far not a manager that sees rules as more important than ideas. In fact, I do have a conservative behavior; however, it does not keep me away from trying new things. When working in a job I have always set goals and guidelines to be successful at my job skill. It has always persevered because I either was promoted at a rapid rate or acknowledgement went to me for an outstanding job. When working on a new job task that has been thrown my way, I get exhilarated from the new at all times. This describes more of an achievement-oriented “primary result” and what I was expecting at the end. At work, I am not seen as manager that will do things “by the book.” However, I am typically concerned with doing what is expected, but I am seeing as a manager that has high abilities to motivate subordinates to set goals and...
