(A history in pictures and documents.
Stewart Carter
Bucina: the historic brass society series, no.8
Pendragon Press, Hillsdale New York

This book was really good. This source helped me trace the development of the trombones physical form, musical use and social functions during the renaissance. I like this because my essay is on the physical development of brass instruments. With the illustration of the physical change you can see how much the trombone has changed.
2) Yale musical instrument series The trumpet

This book traces the evolution and the colourful performance history f one of the world’s oldest instrument (the trumpet), and how it rise to prominence as a solo instrument, this was a good source in some areas but unfortunately this book lacked on information on physical change, and how these physical changes affected the trumpet in certain area of being a solo instrument.
3) The Trombone
Trevor Herbert

This source was very helpful as it helped me gain more knowledge in exploring the origins of the trombone, its invention in the fifteenth century, but also how the story of the trombones lead up to modern times. I like it.
4) The music history ofhe baroque trumpet before 1721 Don L. Smithers J. M. Dent and Sons ltd London First published in 1973

This is a great source. I really like it. This is a treatise on the related types of trumpets used in different periods from Montiverdi to Bach and Handel, its very detailed making it really easy to understand. This treatise holds very valuable information.
5) Early music series 14 The art of the trumpet maker
Robert Barclay
Clarendon Press. Oxford

I dont think this lsource was suitable enough for my essay for it mainly just talked a bout the materials used to develop the instruments rather than talk about why the instruments were developed.
6) Brass instruments and their history and development.
Anthony Baines

This book show the evolution of all brass instruments, even the tuba. Its developments start from the primitive and ancient precursor’s to the orchestral instrument of today.

The Middle Horn Leader- Evolution of the Bugle
By Scooter Pirtle
This website is awesome. It shows a timeline of the bugle from the 19th century- the 21st Century. This is a really good source.
Note to Nancy * As you can see my sources are mainly books. Due to my condition I can’t look at computer screens for very long is wish I could but my optometrist knows what is best for my eyes.
