...Hot on the heels of "Far from Heaven," which looked exactly like a 1957 melodrama, here is "The Core," which wants to be a 1957 science fiction movie. Its special effects are a little too good for that (not a lot), but the plot is out of something by Roger Corman, and you can't improve on dialogue like this: "The Earth's core has stopped spinning!" "How could that happen?" Yes, the Earth's core has stopped spinning, and in less than a year the Earth will lose its electromagnetic shield and we'll all be toast--fried by solar microwaves. To make that concept clear to a panel of U.S. military men, Professor Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) of the University of Chicago borrows a can of room freshener, sets the propellant alight with his Bic, and incinerates a peach. To watch Keyes and the generals contemplate that burnt peach is to witness a scene that cries out from its very vitals to be cut from the movie and made into ukulele picks. Such goofiness amuses me. I have such an unreasonable affection for this movie, indeed, that it is only by slapping myself alongside the head and drinking black coffee that I can restrain myself from recommending it. It is only a notch down from "Congo," "Anaconda," "Lara Croft, Tomb Raider" and other films which those with too little taste think they have too much taste to enjoy. To be sure, "The Core" starts out in an unsettling manner, with the crash-landing of the space shuttle. Considering that "Phone Booth," scheduled for release in October...

...1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed? Ans: The Increasing size of the band had been the core problem for Robin Hood, because it was getting very hard to manage the band. The core issues were the lack of discipline in band and the cost of buying the food was draining the bands financial reserves. 2. Do Robin Hood and his band need a new mission? new objectives? For example: why not accept the offer of the barons to assist in securing King Richard¡¯s release from prison (give me pros and cons for that possible new mission, and do you suggest adopt this new mission)? Ans: Yes, Robin Hood and his band need a new mission, a new objective and a good strategy. He should adopt a new mission to free the people from Prince John and return king Richard to the throne. Robin Hood can also join with barons to collect the ransom to release King Richard. This option might seems risky but he has to do something, which is better than doing nothing and getting caught my Sheriff. His present strategy has been outdated and it could not work at the time when his enemy is too strong and well planned. 3. . What strategic options does Robin Hood have? Is continuing with the present strategy an option or is the present strategy obsolete? For example, why not try to end the campaign by killing the Sheriff; why not try to move to another...

...connected by variances in the Earth's electromagnetic field, scientists, led by Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), a geology professor, and Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci) and egotistical researcher, discover that the Earth's rotating molten core is slowly coming to a stop; without its movement, the electromagnetic field around the earth will disappear, exposing the surface to unfiltered solar radiation and will incinerate anything or anyone exposed to it. Keyes and Zimsky are charged to find a way to restart the core, which requires traveling deep into the Earth and setting off nuclear charges to induce rotational force. Keyes and Zimsky seek the help of Dr. Serge Leveque (Tchéky Karyo), a weapons expert, and Ed "Braz" Brazzelton (Delroy Lindo). Brazzelton reveals a means of not only drilling through the Earth at high speeds using a series of lasers, but also has devised a material, "unobtainium", which is capable of withstanding the pressures deep inside the planet as well as generating energy from them. Keyes himself works to create a means to visualize their path through rock structures via x-rays. To avoid creating a worldwide panic, an expert hacker, Theodore "Rat" Donald Finch (DJ Qualls), is found by an FBI agent (John Shaw) and is brought to monitor the Internet and erase any rumors to the potential fate of the planet. However, there is a hint that the Army is hiding the real reason of the impending catastrophe. The team constructs a snake-like ship named Virgil made...

...Article Essential Layers, Artifacts, and Dependencies of Enterprise Architecture By Robert Winter and Ronny Fischer Abstract After a period where implementation speed was more important than integration, consistency and reduction of complexity, architectural considerations have become a key issue of information management in recent years again. Enterprise architecture is widely accepted as an essential mechanism for ensuring agility and consistency, compliance and efficiency. Although standards like TOGAF and FEAF have developed, however, there is no common agreement on which architecture layers, which artifact types and which dependencies constitute the essence of enterprise architecture. This paper contributes to the identification of essential elements of enterprise architecture by (1) specifying enterprise architecture as a hierarchical, multilevel system comprising aggregation hierarchies, architecture layers and views, (2) discussing enterprise architecture frameworks with regard to essential elements, (3) proposing interfacing requirements of enterprise architecture with other architecture models and (4) matching these findings with current enterprise architecture practice in several large companies. Keywords enterprise architecture, architectural components, architectural layers, architectural views, interfaces ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE: DEFINITION According to ANSI/IEEE Std 1471-2000, architecture is defined as the “ fundamental organization of a system, embodied in...

...Lincoln Electric, a company started over a century ago by John Lincoln had grown from a small electric motor company into the worldwide leader in welding consumables and other innovative products. It's success is attributed to dynamic and innovative products coupled with leadership based on shared-knowledge and adaptable incentive plans for it's employees. These incentive plans included company stock offerings, stock bonuses, good salaries, paid vacation, and guaranteed jobs. The incentives were believed to have contributed to the incredible success of the organization, and could be utilized as a model to their international operations.. Though Lincoln had a string of international success in their Canadian, Australian, and French operation, they were failing to realize profits internationally despite having rapid sales growth. Their balance sheet took a major hit as their debt began to climb, and were beginning to run low on cash. There were a number of causes to this failed policy. Just to name a few, acquisitions, management, and a poor business environment. As a result of their acquisitions, they were entering new markets that had poor labor management, unions, and low productivity. The management was dislocated abroad, and local management was highly inadequate. Secondly, the business environment was also poor. They were in the middle of a global recession, and the market was overpriced for companies. They would eventually learn from their mistakes, raise...

...Wal-Mart Stores is an irresistible retail shopping force in the world we live in today. Majority of our fellow Americans have shopped at the nation’s number one retailer one time or another due to their catchy motto, “Save Money. Live Better.” or “Every Day Low Prices.”. It is also the number one retailer in Canada and Mexico. Today, the company employs 2.2 million associates worldwide and serves 200 million customers each week at more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries. One of those recently added countries being India. India is the second largest country with a population of over 1.2 billion people. The country thrives off of small businesses headed by poor families trying to make a living and to support their families. In the past decade however, India has made it clear they want to expand their horizons. This idea is not favored with everyone due to the fear of forgetting India’s roots and traditions to the modern way (or Western way). It is also causing a stir about the decline in profit to small businesses. The value of Indian economic output in 2012 will be $1.95 trillion and $2.12 trillion in 2013. That makes it one of the 10 largest economies in the world. India has already overtaken several rich countries such as Canada as far as the size of its economy goes. But faster economic growth is important as well as creating a robust economy that offers many opportunities to 1.2 billion Indians. The way to ensure this is not temporary; it’s monetary and fiscal...

...IT3200 Scott Morrissette December 11, 2010 Enterprise Architecture Proposal Project: Revision Plans Every company has a set of capabilities that can be digitized to ensure reliability, high quality, low cost, and timeliness (A-G Magazine, 2008). Money Making Finance has long endured their IT department as the bottleneck rather than an asset. The company has done well over the years without integration; however, as the company continues to grow exponentially, all branches and departments require the need for integration. A coordination model calls for high levels of integration but little standardization of processes (Robertson, Ross, & Weill, 2006). Implementing a coordination model will allow the financial advisors at each branch the power to negotiate and customize their experiences with customers. The focal point of the EA implementation will be the integration of shared data and services by all branches and departments across the world. By focusing IT investments on enabling the integration and standardization required of the company’s operating model, a company prepares itself for future strategic initiatives, without knowing what those initiatives might be (Robertson, Ross, & Weill, 2006) The operating model that has been set forth for Money Making Finance is no doubtable an excellent decision. Other financial and insurance companies have benefited immensely operating their EAs as coordination models to include MetLife and TD BankNorth. Coordination allows companies...

Accenture’s ongoing High Performance IT research reveals that while CIOs want to contribute significant value for their organizations, a host of factors—notably cost-cutting mandates, “keeping the lights on” and fixing troubled projects—inhibit the CIO’s ability to be a value creator. Despite these realities, the research indicates that high-performance IT organizations consistently achieve excellence in IT execution, IT agility and IT innovation, balancing the sometimes opposing demands placed on IT organizations. To respond effectively to today’s challenges, IT organizations need to work differently, leveraging technology in new ways to achieve business results while keeping operating costs low. Accenture helps organizations quickly identify how IT can fuel high performance. We team with IT and business leaders to plan and deploy IT for the most...

...process integrated in the interaction with the environment. From a normative perspective, the analysis of individual decisions is concerned with the logic of decision making and rationality and the invariant choice it leads to it can be based on explicit assumptions or tacit assumptions. In decision making, objectives must be established and placed in the order of importance. It is a benefit to also have an alternative course of action and evaluate it against the objectives. Whichever alternative that is best able to achieve all of the objectives is the one you use. After choosing, further evaluation is needed to prepare for possible additional consequences. Then your decision is made. Functional modelling, Business process modeling, and Enterprise...
