It took Disney three years to make The Lion King, and a significant portion of that time was spent researching Africa and its ecology to make sure they portrayed everything correctly. The Lion King is an entertaining movie, but it also has ecological lessons for the discerning viewer. For instance, a large food chain, or multiple series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food, is shown in the Pridelands; the symbiotic relationships displayed in the movie have counterparts in real life; and abiotic and biotic external factors which influence organisms, populations and communities are present in the movie as well as real life. The Lion King seems not to be based on a fairytale, but rather on the Tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare. The basic character archetypes are concealed, and the storyline is simplified for children. But with a closer inspection of the characters themselves and the storyline, we the seasoned readers, can see just how apparent these similarities are. The story of The Lion King closely parallels that of Hamlet. It is about the jealousy of an uncle named Scar towards his nephew, Simba, who is the son of the king, and rightful heir to the throne. This jealousy drives him to take drastic action to secure himself to the throne. The only way he can do this is to kill his brother, King Mufasa and Simba. ...Conflict Between the Power of Possession and Self Constructed Identity Noah Richler analysis of Canadian literature allowed him to develop his theory that Canadian literature is built on the myth of disappointment. Richler believes that “Canadians depend on the centre but expect little from it” (Richler 281). With Canada being a country built on the hard work from labour workers who had to overcome difficult adversities. With Canada being a multicultural nation with a high number of immigrants coming to Canada to contribute to the image of a country made in the image of others. In Michael Ondaatje’s novel In the Skin of a Lion, Richler’s criteria of disappointment is evident with the recurring references to the struggle of being a labour worker with some having to deal with the language barrier. Their struggles in dealing with the higher authority force these workers to realize that they are on their own. In the end as long as the higher authority continues to create this conflict then workers like Patrick Lewis have to rely on this homegrown identity that workers like him have worked hard to create.
