Copyright © 2005 by Pearson Education, Inc. Instruction in American Classrooms T ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ he reason you’re taking this and other courses in your teacher preparation program is to help you understand American schools, how they attempt to promote student learning, and what teachers can do to contribute to that process. Over the past 25 years a continually expanding body of research has provided educators with a great deal of information about the relationships between teaching and learning. In this chapter we describe this research as we try to answer the following questions: How do effective teachers plan for instruction? What kinds of personal characteristics do effective teachers possess? What kinds of instructional strategies do effective teachers use? How do effective teachers manage their classrooms to create productive learning environments? How do effective teachers assess their students? On what theories of learning do effective teachers base their instruction? Let’s begin by looking at a teacher’s thinking as she plans for her next week’s math instruction. “What are you doing?” Jim Barton asked his wife, Shirley, as he saw her hard at work on a Saturday afternoon cutting and drawing on cardboard pieces. “Working on a unit on equivalent fractions and adding fractions with unlike denominators. . . . Academic Writing

...CS 209. Mathematical Writing—Issues of technical writing and the effective presentation of mathematics and computer science. Preparation of theses, papers, books, and “literate” computer programs. A term paper on a topic of your choice; this paper may be used for credit in another course. The first three lectures were a “minicourse” that summarized the basics. About two hundred people attended those three sessions, which were devoted primarily to a discussion of the points in §1 of this report. An exercise (§2) and a suggested solution (§3) were also part of the minicourse. The remaining 28 lectures covered these and other issues in depth. We saw many examples of “before” and “after” from manuscripts in progress. We learned how to avoid excessive subscripts and superscripts. We discussed the documentation of algorithms, computer programs, and user manuals. We considered the process of refereeing and editing. We studied how to make effective diagrams and tables, and how to find appropriate quotations to spice up a text. Some of the material duplicated some of what would be discussed in writing classes offered by the English department, but the vast majority of the lectures were devoted to issues that are specific to mathematics and/or computer science. Guest lectures by Herb Wilf (University of Pennsylvania), Jeff Ullman (Stanford), Leslie Lamport (Digital Equipment Corporation), Nils Nilsson (Stanford), Mary-Claire van Leunen (Digital Equipment Corporation), Rosalie Stemer (San Francisco...

Feminicide, Gender Violence Against Women

...LAS Disposables Ciudad Juárez March 13, 2015
Femicide and Structural Violence against Women in By: Craig Serpa LAS DISPOSABLES PAGE 1 ! Introduction Much research has been produced attempting to describe and subvert femicide in Ciudad Juárez, but perhaps the most accurate description of the gendered violence can be found in an American political cartoon. A maquiladora, or Mexican border assembly/ processing plant, stands alone among rolling hills littered with gravestones in the shape of the symbol of Venus. The graves extend to the horizon line in all directions, seemingly endless. From the viewer’s position in the lower right corner of the cartoon they can discern details on the nearest grave: the top arch of the hand mirror reads “femicide”; it’s handle, “over 370 killed and counting”; a small altar of flowers, bread, and a prayer candle rest at its base. Caricatures of a police officer, politician, Uncle Sam, and cartel boss shift nervously in front of a mugshot height chart. They look at the viewer and the sky but never at the graves, symbolically refusing to acknowledge their role in the women’s murders. The intricate detail given to the usual suspects and graves overshadows the women themselves. The factory workers are only suggested by a female skeleton, her gender marked with long curly hair, hangs out of the window of a bus driving to the factory. She glances over her shoulder and makes uncomfortable eye contact with the viewer, her gaze asking how...

...Chapter 2: Real Options Chapter Introduction and Objectives: Managers often overrule NPV based recommendations in capital budgeting on strategic grounds. Does it mean that the NPV approach is flawed? The standard DCF methodology assumes that managers make an investment decision and then see how the market evolves. In many situations managers can wait and then make a decision. The latter is an option - an option to defer or time the investment decision. Pharmaceutical companies, for example, frequently enter into agreements with small biotechnology companies and Universities for research and development. The traditional DCF methodology does not work well in case of such projects because of prolonged development and uncertainty in cash flows. For gaining access to research, the pharmaceutical company makes an up-front payment and a series of progress payments. These contingent payments give the pharmaceutical company the right but not the obligation to make further investments. Such investments are best evaluated as options . The chapter has the following objectives: • Highlight different types of financial options • Bring out an analogy between financial options and real options • Highlight the different types of real options • Introduce valuation of real options Consider a project that has a best outcome of $ 13 m and a worst outcome of $ 9 m. Each of these outcomes are equally likely to occur (probability is 0.5). The expected value...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

Gender

...Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, May 1997 v36 n9-10 p551(22) Advertising's effects on men's gender role attitudes. Jennifer Garst; Galen V. Bodenhausen. Author's Abstract: COPYRIGHT 1997 Plenum Publishing Corporation We posited that media images of men influence the gender role attitudes that men express soon after exposure to the images. A total of 212 men (87% European American, 7% Asian or Asian American, 3% African American, and 3% other) viewed magazine advertisements containing images of men that varied in terms of how traditionally masculine vs. androgynous they were and whether the models were the same age or much older than the viewers. Men who had initially been less traditional espoused more traditional attitudes than any other group after exposure to traditionally masculine models, although they continued to endorse relatively nontraditional views after exposure to androgynous models. These findings suggest that nontraditional men's gender role attitudes may be rather unstable and susceptible to momentary influences such as those found in advertising. Full Text: COPYRIGHT 1997 Plenum Publishing Corporation In the average American household, the television is turned "on" for almost seven hours each day, and the typical adult or child watches two to three hours of television per day. It is estimated that the average child sees 360,000 advertisements by the age of eighteen (Harris, 1989). Due to this extensive exposure to mass media depictions, the media's influence...
