Present Trade Rekatuin Between India and Pakistan

...Trade Relation between India and Pakistan. Introduction India and Pakistan have been trying, though not very successfully, since the Shimla Agreement, 1972, to create political harmony. Several attempts later, the political and security issues have only become worse. It is imperative to explore the bilateral trade relations between India and Pakistan, so as to seek a way towards a deeper engagement, as these two countries have the potential to change the geopolitical dynamics of Asia.We shall first explore the history of bilateral trade relations between the two nations. History of Trade between India and Pakistan Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan could be of mutual gain to both as they were not separate once. Mumbai and Karachi, their major business centres are near each other, which serves another advantage. But these advantages are marred by disadvantages such as, non-tariff barreiers, poor trade facilitation measures like customs and porcedural barriers, difficult visa regime, poor infrastucture resulting in costly transportation, and many more. At the time of independence, almost3/5th of Pakistan’s total exports were directed towards the Indian market, and 1/3rd of its imports came from India (Sangani and Schaffer 2003). But discord in political relations obstructed bilateral trade. After India’s devaluation of its currency in 1949, Pakistan refused to devalue its currency and later imposed import restrictions...

Textile Sector

...New textile policy brings in Rs 3,800 cr investment The Hindu Business Line: October 22, 2012 Mumbai: The textile sector is on the upswing in Maharashtra due to the new textile policy. Since April, the State has managed to attract Rs 3,834 crore in investments in 411 new textile projects, said State Textile Minister Arif Naseem Khan on Monday. Addressing the media after reviewing the process of policy implementation, Khan said that the new projects would provide about 30,000 jobs in the State. Most of the investment has happened in cotton spinning and ginning units. Textile companies are keen to set up units in Vidarbha, Marathwada and the Khandesh due to the ready supply of cotton, he said. “Due to the policy, the sector is likely to get Rs 40,000 crore investment in the next five years and generate employment for 11 lakh people,” Khan said. Khan said that the policy was not a single-window policy but a ‘zero-window policy,’ in which projects would not come to the Government for clearance, The due diligence is done by banks. If a company manages to get its loan sanctioned under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme from banks, then it is eligible for subsidy, he said. The Union Government initiated the Scheme in 1999, and it has attracted over Rs 4 lakh crore investments in the sector, as of date. Textile Secretary Sunil Porwal said that all the 411 projects have achieved financial closure. For the Rs 3,834 crore investments, about Rs 400 crore will be the subsidy...

Impact of Privatization on Organization

...profitability, output, efficiency and employment. It will be analyzed to compare the performance of public and private sector organization in Pakistan. Keywords: Privatization, profitability, output, efficiency and employment Introduction Despite frequent changes in the governments since 1985, five regularly elected and six care takers, there has been consensus on the continuation of privatization policy and as such it is expected to be cornerstone of all the future government policies, at least in the near future. Instead of arguing the merits or demerits of the privatization policy, we explore its impact on the levels of efficiency. A large number of public sector units have already been divested and a number of other public enterprises including telecommunications and thermal power stations have been placed on the privatization list. Nevertheless, serious doubts have been expressed about transparency of the bidding process and the impact of privatization on efficiency, investment, production, prices, employment and fiscal deficit. Accordingly, there is a need to identify constraints in realizing various objectives of privatization with a view to suggesting concrete policy measures that may be taken to overcome the constrain and to improve the performance of the organization. Divestiture of assets is not new to Pakistan though the motivation for divestiture has not been the same in different time periods. During the 50s and the 60s, public sector used to...

We are now quite used to hearing the rhetoric by the government and bureaucracy on how Pakistan has one of the world’s lowest tax to GDP ratios since long (by their account it has stood between 9.50 and 10.40 percent in recent years), which also happens to be extremely low when compared to its neighboring countries and similar economies. So Government is unable to allocate reasonable funds for development projects. Although Pakistan has adopted best practices of the World through Income Tax Ordinance 2001 and formulation of Inland...
