...Lighting Lighting is an essential aspect of home furnishings that also makes interiors more pleasant and allows tasks and activities to be completed much more easily. Lighting energy and therefore, consumer cost, is a necessary consideration. Lamp is the technical term for what we call commonly a light bulb. A luminaire is the technical term for what is commonly called a lamp or fixture, which is a complete lighting unit. It includes the lamp holder, power connection, and any internal devices such as reflectors. Purposes of Lighting The purposes of residential lighting are: 1. Ambient lighting- needed to perform routine activities 2. Task lighting- needed to perform specific tasks such as reading 3. Decorative lighting- needed to create an aesthetically pleasing environment All three types of lighting are frequently combined in a space, and their purposes may overlap as required by the time of day or the uses of the room. Ambient Lighting- is also referred to as general lighting. It provides uniform light for general purposes but not enough for specific tasks. Ambient light can be direct or indirect. Direct- when direct light is used, nearly 90-100 percent of the light is directed toward the surface to be lit. The direct light shines directly downward from the luminaire. Downlights are fixtures that are installed on the ceiling or wall to cast light below. If...

...lived in California for three years, have visits San Francisco numerous times and it was not until this past weekend that I saw the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco for the first time. We took the trip to show our foreign exchange around and show her the beauty of our area and I was surprised to find myself in amazement not only that I did not rush to see such a thing before now, but the beauty and history of the building (pic. 1) as well. In the center is a large dome topped structure surrounded by intricate detailed carvings beautiful landscaping surrounds the front towering columns, stretching from each side is 200 feet of shorter square buildings with columns across the front. (pic. 2) As you stroll through the structure you see detail and beautiful carving in every corner and every inch, (pic 3) in the main Dome, when you look up, you’re surrounded by statues of angels looking down at you from every direction making you feel like you’re the center of their attention. (pic. 4) In the year 1915 architect Bernard R. Maybeck was given the task of creating a Palace of Fine arts for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, its sole purpose was to exhibit works of art. Bernard R. Maybeck used a classicism approach and chose the theme of a Roman style ruin with a romantic feel and Greek decoration. When Maybeck presented his sketch on a brown piece of paper to the commissioners they were dazzled by the exhibition hall, its colonnade, and its rotunda. Our reading this...

...Task 2 Lit 1 Mallory Carter Situation A. Employee A has been with Company X for two years. Employee A's spouse gave birth prematurely to twins. He requested leave to be with his spouse, which was granted. Employee A has been on leave for 11 weeks, and has asked to return to work, and to be paid the withheld salary from his 11-week leave. The previous department manager left the company during Employee A’s leave. The new manager has agreed to Employee A’s return to the previous job, at the previous rate of pay. But the manager has denied the request for the 11 weeks of withheld salary. -Employee A will not be able to retain any of his pay while he was on leave for the 11 weeks. Under the FMLA, the employer is not required to pay the employee while on unpaid medical leave. The FMLA covers unpaid leave for up to 12 weeks. It also requires that the employee be reinstated to its previous position without problems, which was taken care of. Even though there is a new manager they are following the procedures under the FMLA and will not be penalized for not paying employee A’s salary. Employee A should have looked in his leave further before deciding to take leave. There was not a violation of the FMLA. Situation B. Employee B is 68 years old and has been with Company X for 42 years. During the annual performance review last month, it was determined that Employee B was doing “above average” work in the department. Employee B was denied a promotion due to age. A co-worker...

His analytical framework for a livestock development strategy is given in Table 1.6. This illustrates the complex interactions that determine whether a new technology will be adopted by the farmer. 1.6 A LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY The challenge to agricultural scientists is thus as formidable as that facing the sociologists and economists; the task must be to maximise energy production from biomass while...
