Comparative Drama Matrix

Fill in the matrix below, in which you will analyze the characterization, dramatic irony, plot, and conflict in Oedipus Rex and A Raisin in the Sun. Then, answer the question below the matrix.

Oedipus Rex A Raisin in the Sun
Characterization In this drama the most important characters include Oedipus Rex, Creon, and Iocaste. In this drama the most important characters include
Walter, Ruth, Beneatha, and Lena

Dramatic Irony The dramatic irony in this drama is that Oedipus Rex moved from his home because a prophecy dictated he would kill his father and marry his mother. The dramatic irony is that he ends up moving far away and finds out he was an orphan who was sent away by his mother to the same place where her did kill his father and marry his mother and they had children together. The dramatic irony in this drama is that Lena finally trusts her boy (Walter) to take care of Beneatha’s schooling and use the rest of for his venture which he thinks will pan out, but he gets ripped off.
Plot The plot of the story is that no one should judge someone else unless they know the truth. The difficulty is that the man who helps Oedipus is the same man he accused of trying to kill him. The plot of this story is to look at who you do business with no matter what the reward will be.
Conflict The conflict in this story is who Creon should believe when it comes to life. It is also important to look who is the one presenting the problem. The conflict is with Lena. Does she trust her son or does she live their dream? It is difficult to understand what will benefit all of them in the end.

Which author do you think most effectively utilized dramatic literary devices and conventions—Sophocles or Lorraine Hansberry? Explain your answer. I believe that Sophocles effectively utilized dramatic literary devices because this story makes people look at what a person’s perspective may be. The difference in every character is seen in how they react to each individual crisis.

...High-Frequency Trading Peter Gomber, Björn Arndt, Marco Lutat, Tim Uhle Chair of Business Administration, especially e-Finance E-Finance Lab Prof. Dr. Peter Gomber Campus Westend • RuW P.O. Box 69 • D-60629 Frankfurt/Main Commissioned by Executive Summary High-frequency trading (HFT) has recently drawn massive public attention fuelled by the U.S. May 6, 2010 flash crash and the tremendous increases in trading volumes of HFT strategies. Indisputably, HFT is an important factor in markets that are driven by sophisticated technology on all layers of the trading value chain. However, discussions on this topic often lack sufficient and precise information. A remarkable gap between the results of academic research on HFT and its perceived impact on markets in the public, media and regulatory discussions can be observed. The research at hand aims to provide up-to-date background information on HFT. This includes definitions, drivers, strategies, academic research and current regulatory discussions. It analyzes HFT and thus contributes to the ongoing discussions by evaluating certain proposed regulatory measures, trying to offer new perspectives and deliver solution proposals. Our main results are: HFT is a technical means to implement established trading strategies. HFT is not a trading strategy as such but applies the latest technological advances in market access, market data access and order routing to maximize the returns of established trading strategies. Therefore...

This work is in the public domain. EACH SOUL IS POTENTIALLY DIVINE. THE GOAL IS TO MANIFEST THIS DIVINE WITHIN, BY CONTROLLING NATURE, EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL. DO THIS EITHER BY WORK, OR WORSHIP, OR PSYCHIC CONTROL, OR PHILOSOPHY, BY ONE, OR MORE, OR ALL OF THESE—AND BE FREE. IS THE WHOLE OF RELIGION. DOCTRINES, OR DOGMAS, OR RITUALS, OR BOOKS, OR TEMPLES, OR FORMS, ARE BUT SECONDARY DETAILS. THIS PREFACE SINCE the dawn of history, various extraordinary phenomena have been recorded as happening amongst human beings. Witnesses are not wanting in modern times to attest the fact of such events, even in societies living under the full blaze of modern science. The vast mass of such evidence is unreliable, as coming from ignorant, superstitious, or fraudulent persons. In many instances the so-called miracles are imitations. But what do they imitate? It is not the sign of a candid and scientific mind to throw overboard anything without proper investigation. Surface scientists, unable to explain the various extraordinary mental phenomena, strive to ignore their very existence. They are, therefore, more culpable than those who think that their prayers are answered by a being, or beings, above the clouds, or than those who believe that their petitions will make such beings...

...In Other Words This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to the training of translators and provides an explicit syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and...
