Interviews Literacy is usually understood as the reading, writing, arithmetic abilities. The term also includes the skills to use language, images numbers, and computers to communicate. An interview to five parents was conducted in order to understand how they view the importance of literacy and the steps used to implement it with their children. The interviews showed that all parents see literacy as highly important in the children’s lives. It was stated that through literacy children develop their speaking and listening skills, help children to improve strong vocabulary, to express themselves and communicate better with others. Children draw picture about the story and the older ones wrote short stories and practice writing new vocabulary words. The last book experience was described as reading one of the favorite children’s book. Some of the books belong to the children and others were borrowed from the library. They books were described as picture and chapter books. Parents engage children to read by taking turns while reading, use different tone of voice and dramatize the story, talk about the story and how it relates to them, read books on line, and have library trips. Furthermore, parents encourage children to explore literacy by, being a role model as children see them performing reading and writing activities, using learning games either physical or computerized games and allowing the extra play time if they do their reading and writing assignments. Moreover parents respond to children questions and engage in a conversation by pinpoint new vocabulary, asking details of the story, asking them to use their imagination to find the answers, use open ended questions, asking details about the day at school, and …show more content…
Every parent was very eager to answer questions and describe the activities taking place at home with their children. Likewise, as educator is fundamental to provide an environment where the children feel welcome and perceived that they are an integral part of the classroom. Allowing them to participate in all the activities and focus at the same time on individual needs of the children to provide each students with the academic and emotional support in order to see the children succeed. Similar to parents stimulating the love for reading to their children, it is essential to have as a classroom goal to teach appreciation for the literacy, by performing read aloud sections where children can perceived the essence of the story, the character’s feelings and feel motivating to participate by answering questions and doing further activities relate to the story in other learning

I want to explore why I feel that Ken Rowe’s literacy report misses the complexity of literacy development in young people– at least from my secondary perspective. Of course he covers some bases and on the surface suggests a balanced approach. He is also right that teachers need to be better educated about reading practices. However, the emphasis on phonics which has been widely reported in the media appears disproportionate to its usefulness. Some students can manage to read and spell without phonics so why do we need to occupy their brains with phonemes or phonic practices. Others need them. The informed primary teacher differentiates accordingly. What Ken Rowe does not focus on is the literacy needs of young people in secondary schools where decoding is less of a problem than comprehension. For many students reading is meaningless – particularly fiction.
