Literary Elements in a Poem

...Literary elements in “ She walks among the untrodden ways” Jacqueline Garcia ENG125: Introduction to Literature Robert Frost says, "There are three things, after all, that a poem must reach: the eye, the ear, and what we may call the heart or the mind. It is most important of all to reach the heart of the reader." (Clugston, 2012) How true is this? Each writer has to tap into the sense on the reader to convey each ones feelings. How is it that we can take their attempts to do just that and understand it from a reader stand point? The answer is key literary elements; there are many kinds of literary elements that can allow readers to do this without completely getting frustrated and giving up on wonderful pieces of literature. Identifying the key literary elements in literature allows for a deeper understanding and appreciation for the particular piece that’s being read. The elements help articulate a response and a reactions to what the author is trying to convey, or wants to you grasp from it. While reading a particular piece of literature by Willaim Wordsworth called “She dwelt among the untrodden ways” (Wordsworth, 1798) I found that the three key elements that help me gain a response and capture a reaction to the poem were figurative language, tone and theme. Each one allowing me to better understanding of what the author was trying to convey. Some people might get one thing from it and other another but non-the less his message will be convey something to whomever reads...

Elements of Literary Terms

...One’s life story can be written out of two words. In this case it’s precision and persimmons. It’s crazy how two words with different meanings can mean the same thing or paint the same picture. This poem has two words that bring a flurry of memories back to the poet mind beginning with a persimmon. The persimmon shows a loving connection between two people. “Persimmons” is a free verse poem by Li-Young Lee, who tells a narrative that being in elementary school. He didn’t know the difference between precision and persimmon, but throughout the poem he illustrates both words. The poem shows precision in the other words he has trouble with words like fight and fright, also wren and yarn. The poet has a connection with these words too which makes it hard for him to remember the difference. Lines 32-33 make it clear how he relates the words so close to each other. “Fight was what I did when I was frightened, fright was what I flet when I was fighting (Lee, 557).” This poem dramatizes the conflict between good and bad memory. The poet is in class and gets slapped on his head because he doesn’t know the difference between persimmon and precision. The fact that he needs precision to pick a ripe persimmon makes it even harder for the international student. The poet also holds out on the class information about the persimmon that Mrs. Walker has brought to class. He knows that it was unripe, so he doesn’t join in the eating because he feels as that is payback for his mistake with the...

Literary Elements In The Crucible

... To start, as if learning about witchcraft isn't already interesting enough, the author of The Crucible, made some minor adjustments to the story will have more twists and turns that will grab the reader and show important aspects of the time period. The most drastic change in the crucible vs real life is that John Proctor, one of the main characters and Abigail did infact never have an affair. This kind of "love interest" or "forbidden love" is the juicy hook that a play evidently needs to grab theater audiences. (Gracyk) There is also no proof that Abigail even worked for them especially since she lived so far away from the Proctor home. (Davis) Really there is no evidence that they even knew each other. Although, Abigail did accuse him of witchcraft so they possibly had some kind of connection, but not romantically. Addition to falses in the story, it is also reliable and educational because of the truths. This whole story is based off of the truth about how there was a group of girls who out of nowhere accused the innocent of witchcraft. Tituba was historically the first accused of conjuring spirits and using magic, followed by Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne just like in the book. It is true that 19 people were hanged for not confessing witchcraft and Giles Corey did infact also get crushed to death by rocks. He was accused of witchcraft but refused to make a plea to the court. He was required by law to enter a plea but refused. He was pressed to death with stones. (Davis)...

Literary Elements In Station 11

...Station Eleven, a science-fiction novel that is written by Emily St. John Mandel, is a unique piece of work in the grand literature field. While other post-apocalypse novels are still writing about dangerous environment and struggle of survival, Mandel takes her aim at portraying a Symphony of joyful artists who travel from towns to towns in a ruined world. For each stop, the Symphony would build up a stage and entertain the local publics with classical concerts and Shakespeare’s theatrical plays. Indeed, the content of Station Eleven has successfully drawn readers’ attention, and Mandel is adept at giving her characters’ emotional features to make them particular. However, she applies the genre of post-apocalypse in a defective way. What Mandel writes in this book is only a virtual utopia she creates to fulfill her ignorant fantasy. In other words, she fails to arrange enough circumstantial evidences to convince the readers that artist is always an irreplaceable role for human civilization in the post-apocalypse genre. The reason that Mandel involves artists in the post-apocalypse genre is emphasizing the human cultural art as a valuable legacy for rebuilding civilization. She affirms her argument that art would eventually save people’s soul even from a devastated world. However, she gives a little discernment for the true horror that survivors may encounter. On the contrary, Sigrid Nunez, another eminent American writer, makes a judicious announcement in her passage, “Shakespeare...

How Theme Shapes a Story

...given a synopsis of the story detailing the actions and characters in it. As I have come to learn, theme is much more than a distilled retelling of a story. Theme gives a story a deeper meaning. The theme focuses the story and is the behind the scenes force that propels the story forward. In other words it gives the story purpose and shape. “Theme will attempt to hold all the elements of your story in place. It is like a cup. A vessel. A goblet”(Bain, T 2010). In this paper will attempt to explore how literary elements like symbolism and character build and affect the narrative of theme in a story. One element of a story’s theme is symbolism. Symbolism according to our text is something that has a literal identity but also stands for something else (Clugston, R 2010). For an example the five interlocking ring of the Olympic symbol. Clearly they can be identified as ring, but when they are colored blue, yellow, black, green and red, they become much more. They are a symbol of the pinicle of atheletic compition and excellence. Symbolism in literature gives the writer’s work texture. It is one element that is used to provide the reader with a deeper meaning of the story. It is what makes the reader care about the story. Symbolism when used as a tool pushes you toward the underlining truth a story. Jean Rhys uses many symbols in her story I Used to Live Here Once. One of central themes of this story is a journey. The woman in the story is on both a literal and figurative...

Literary Elements In We Real Cool By Gwendolyn Brooks

...Gwendolyn Brooks’ “We Real Cool” is a short yet intriguing poem that contains many elements to arouse a reader’s curiosity. From the title to the lines and stanzas, the word play entices readers as it generates a sense of arrogance, pride and bravado. This short poem details the events of seven young men whose life choices ends up leading to their untimely death. Brooks uses literary elements such as the player’s wordplay, the setting and the change of tone in the last line in order to illustrate the theme of targeting the dangers of the youth.
