...~Mao Zedong~ Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung) was born in Chaochan, China, in 1893. At the 18 years of age, he served in the revolutionary army during the 1911 Chinese Revolution. Chinese was inspired by the Russian Revolution and therefore established the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai in 1921. They were adapted by the ideas of Lenin. He and other members had joined the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party), which Mao worked as a political organizer in Shanghai. With the help of advisers from the Soviet Union the Kuomintang increased its power in China. Their new leader Chiang Kai-Shek eliminated the communists from the organization. The nationalist set a barrier and Mao Zedong decided to evacuate the area. In October 1934, Mao and some 100,000 men and their independents headed west through mountain areas. They experienced terrible hardships. They covered about 50 miles a day and reached Shensi on 20th October 1935. When the Japanese Army invaded China in 1937, Chiang Kai-Shek was forced to move his capital from Nanking to Chungking, and lost control of the coastal regions and most major cities of Japan. Inspired by a worldwide best seller that many readers must have assumed was unfilmable, it is a triumph over its difficulties. The story involves the 227 days that its teenage hero spends drifting across the Pacific in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. They find themselves in the same boat after an amusing and colorful prologue, which in itself could have been enlarged into an exciting family film. Then it expands into a parable of survival, acceptance and adaptation. The story begins in a small family zoo in Pondicherry, India, where the boy christened Piscine is raised. Piscine translates from French to English as "swimming pool," but in an India where many more speak English than French, his playmates of course nickname him "pee." Determined to put an end to this, he adopts the name "Pi," demonstrating an uncanny ability to write down that mathematical constant that begins with 3.14 and never ends. The zoo goes broke, and Pi's father puts his family and a few valuable animals on a ship bound for Canada. In a bruising series of falls, a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and the lion tumble into the boat with the boy, and are swept away by high seas. His family is never seen again, and the last we see of the ship is its lights disappearing into the deep — a haunting shot. He believes that the only to prevent harm done to the minorities by the majorities is “to keep majorities from uniting around a common interest – the reverse of what transformational leaders are supposed to do” (Ethics, 124). In general, I agree with Keeley. He attributes this idea to James Madison, although other scholars have disagreed about Madison’s true options. I will not enter the dispute about Madison’s ideas and opinions; that would be an exercise in history. Rather, I will discuss the content of the argument: whether transformational leadership harms minorities. Other issues, such as the effectiveness of transformational leadership and other ethical implications of the leadership types are beyond the scope of this paper and will not be discussed. To clearly present the issue, I will first define the two types of leadership. The definition of transactional leadership is quite intuitive. This type describes the interaction between leader and follower as a transaction. This is akin to the factor market studied in economics; a follower agrees to serve the leader in return for some sort of incentive. This could be a wage if it is in business, or perhaps just a feeling of accomplishment in a volunteer situation. Two non-Western countries that have been impacted by globalization are India and China. India opened its doors to globalization during the 1990's following an economic crisis in which the country almost defaulted on loans (Balakrishnan, n.d.). Before globalization India purposely isolated itself from world markets and was in a state of economic stagnation (Nayar, 2007). This stagnation left the country in profound poverty with no industrial growth. The people of India faced other challenges as well such as illiteracy, government corruption, and malnutrition (Wikipedia, 2013). In the years since globalization industrial growth has occurred at a rate of about 6.5 percent that has thwarted any reoccurrence of economic decline and a poverty rate at 26 percent that had previously been 55 percent (Nayar, 2007).
