...Courteney Lodato McKenzie Wohlfarth Famine in Africa English 102 Baker College Famine in Africa Does music have the ability to impact listeners socially? Yes, music impacts listeners socially by adding meaning and themes to their lyrics. Artists can write music about anything that they want, which can include social issues around the world. Music that includes social issues can inspire people and give them the motivation to try and do something about the issue. “We Are The World”, by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, impacted listeners because it addressed very real issues that the African continent was experiencing. Specifically, the lyrics bring awareness of hunger and poverty as results of the drought. In the 1980’s the continent of Africa was going through troubling times. The continents population was projecting at shocking numbers, degrading ecologically, and plummeting into debt. A rapidly growing population is a long term problem that is faced by any continent that can not sustain a good quality of life. The rate of death in Africa slowed, and the fertility rate increased. The average amount of children per mother is estimated at 6.2. Couples are getting married at younger ages which is slowly raising the statistic. The physical resources in Africa in the 1980’s where degrading due to eroding soil, falling water tables, and dying forests. With no land there is no food to grow, starving the population. In order to grow crops however one is required to have money...

...In the movie, The Best Years of Our Lives is about three soldiers adjusting to life after coming home from the war (WWII). In the film director William Wyler used an array of techniques to capture different feelings and emotions of each protagonist in the movie, as they adjust to life at home. In the bar scene where Al Stephenson and Fred Derry met to discuss Fred’s relationship with Al’s daughter, Peggy. In a wide shot view at the beginning of the scene when Fred walks into the bar, the viewer can see Al sitting in the booth at Butch’s bar then Fred walks in, into the bar in the background. Fred eventually takes a seat with Al in the booth, when Al’s Face comes into view finally He's background is dark as if he is coming from the shadows, this is different because throughout the film Al has this bright aura to him. In an over-the-shoulder shot the camera focuses on Al asking his friend if he loved his daughter Peggy, then the camera focused back onto Fred in another over-the-shoulder shot as Fred tries to process what Fred is asking of Al. When Fred answers Al with a Yes, that he did love Peggy, the view becomes a two shot view. Now both Al and Fred are in the shot, and the viewer can see both recations form each protagnoist. After a profound and heated discussion among both men, the camera as another close up Al asking Fred what was he going to do about his relationship with Peggy. Al then tells Fred that he no longer wants his friend to see his daughter and to end everything...

...Although the long-running comedy show Saturday Night Live has countless memorable sketches, the ones often most beloved by fans, are the ones in which the characters “break”. In acting, “breaking” is when an actor breaks character (due to laughing or messing up a line), and it can often lead to a calamitous disruption of the whole scene. It is curious, one might notice, that the most revered sketches of this TV show are the ones in which the writing, acting, and premise of the scene go completely off the rails. This strange positive reaction to a major deviation in expectations is not just present in the world of late-night comedy, but also the service industry, and the first two chapters of this text provide an understanding of why it happens,...

...This photograph is of Ed Mirvish in front of his store, Honest Ed's, on the corner of Bathurst and Bloor St. West in Toronto and was taken in 1983. The photograph was taken by Tibor Kolley for the Globe and Mail and was sourced on their website from the news article on the history of Honest Ed's. This image interested me because of Honest Ed's recent closure, as well as because I find it visually interesting as there is something going on in the fore, middle, and background of the image. Reading Reflection #1: Barthes’ concepts of Connotation & Dennotation This image relates to Barthes concept of the photographic message, specifically in relation to the “denotation” and “connotation” of the messages that can be read from press images. To summarize, Barthes describes that a press photograph has both a denoted message and a connoted message. Essentially, the denoted message is whatever is in the image (Barthes 17). In the case of my own chosen photograph, it is an older male in a suit standing in front of a street corner with a gathering of people around a building behind him. Secondly, press photographs also have a connoted message, which the public decides based on what they see and what they can interpret from the denoted image (17). For example, assuming that the man owns (what might be) a store behind him is a connoted message. Or that the people behind him are lined up for a big sale is also a connoted message; it is making inferences about the image based on already...

...Steele Clement Mr. Ashby AP US History 2 December 2014 People are not aware of the harsh living conditions that poor immigrants in the slums faced in the 1890’s. Jacob Riis showed how awful the slums were in hi 1890 novel How The Other Half Lives. In many different chapters, he writes about the harsh living conditions and vacational options. Riis focuses each chapter on a different ethnic group. These groups include the Jewish, Blacks, and Italians. Italians were “welcomed as a tenant who “makes less trouble””.(Riis Ch5, Par 1) THe Italians were not troublemakers in comparison to the Germans, however they were very humble. They took commands from the owners of their run down houses without arguing. One of those examples being robbery. The...

...The 1890 book How the Other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis, sought out to expose the horrific conditions that over one million immigrant workers and their families faced in the tenements of New York's East Side slum district. A citizen's movement prompted by the guilty consciouses of the middle class resulted in the creation of the Board Of Health, that passed the 1867 "Tenement House Act". The act mandated the cutting of 46,000 windows into interior rooms solely for ventilation purposes. These renovations were met with opposition from tenement owners as well as by tenants. In many accounts tenants had to be physically dragged out from cellar apartments by police officials. In spite of the Tenement House Act, many renovated buildings had no apparent improvements . New tenements that were constructed after the act still had floor plans that left rooms dark and dank and, over crowding was still permitted. The air inside the tenements were described as " ...fouler than...

...“Live On” You, little one who cries every day and dreams without a smile every night, hear me out and don’t lose yourself. Do not give up because, to live on, you have to fight. See you neglect the friends you don’t know you have, though about that you truly don’t have a clue. Defenseless girl, take off your grey and wet blindfold. Notice the hands that are trying to reach you for you to hold. It is for you that they are trying so hard, and the distance between you and them is not a yard. Confused girl, perhaps it is unfair to you. You are just a kid, but you already feel like this. You feel misunderstood; you feel unnecessary. You think you’re falling into an abyss. You feel you are incompetent at expressing yourself. You think you’ve for too long been amiss. You question life; you cannot understand its meaning. You don’t know you’re too young to know of what life consists. You don’t know what to think of yourself; you question your existence. You are so weary and frustrated at how your flow of tears persists! However, not all is sorrow; not everything is aching sadness. Behind the loneliness you obsess about, there is also bliss. You can become strong. You can find happiness. You can live! But for that to be, you first have to believe your will exists. Blind girl, God and many others love you so much! ...

...Weight Loss: Eat To Live - Not Live To Eat By Mary ShomonJanuary 7, 2004 Wendy Hearn has some thoughts about why we eat... "Do you find yourself eating food when you're not even hungry? I've noticed that others, myself included, often eat food without even stopping to assess whether we're hungry or not. I encourage you to get in touch with your body and eat only when you need to. This entails being aware of your body's needs and not eating food if you're not hungry. When I speak to people who maintain a healthy weight level without any real effort, I find one of the keys for them is they only eat when they're hungry. If they're not hungry they don't eat. This group of people generally find it hard to understand how the rest of us can eat food if we're not hungry. As most of you know, when we eat food when we're not hungry, this is usually being triggered by something else which is going on in our lives. One of the first steps to identifying these triggers and dealing with them is for you to be aware of the times when you're hungry and the times when you're not. This will take some time and effort to start with, but as with any habit, it becomes easier over time. Eventually, you will unconsciously go through the process of determining when you're really hungry. First, you need to start thinking consciously about your hunger levels. I would suggest that in your mind or on paper you create a ladder with 10 rungs and label each rung with a level of hunger, according...

...Transport for London Central London Congestion Charge, Social impacts Survey 2002, 2003 This report was commissioned by TfL Congestion Charging from the research agency MORI to report on the findings from the main surveys completed as part of the monitoring programme to understand the social impacts of the congestion charge on Londoners and those visiting London. As a panel survey the scale has been unprecedented in researching ongoing social impacts of a transport scheme in London. This programme of research consisted of a wave of surveys ‘Before’ the scheme began, and an equivalent set ‘After’ the implementation of the scheme. The report was the culmination of the project covering the second wave of surveys which was contracted to be undertaken by MORI. The full methodology is clearly described within the report. The report comprises of chapters on each of the main areas covered in the survey. Each chapter then draws on the key findings across each geographical area and comments where there are significant differences between these locations or across classifications within groups of interest. It primarily focuses on results from the ‘After’ wave of surveys, but where appropriate compares these results to respondents expectations from the ‘Before’ wave. The document is very user-friendly, clearly summarising key findings at the front of each chapter, as well as in an executive summary. In addition Chapter 2 provides a useful summary of results across each area and non-socio...

He started the speech by asking where was God when 11 million people died? I thought the speaker had the audience in the beginning in just wearing the uniform, I felt it was a very effective way to gain the audience’s attention. In my opinion, the speaker gained my attention and he may have improved his speech by having more eye contact and giving us a presentation with more inflection in his voice and maybe even had a better introduction. The thesis of this speech was to tell a story of how a man became a survivor during one of the most trying times in the world, The Holocaust. He wanted to relay his story but also to tell us on how a man could have so much hate in his heart against a human people. The thesis was spot on for the occasion and the audience, to me you knew what you were going to this speech to hear about a man surviving the holocaust in a slave labor camp controlled by the Nazi’s, German soldiers with Hitler as their ruler. Also in this speech the thesis could have been based on how it is to overcome even the worst defining obstacles...

In this thesis I would like to approach the meaning the song as for me and the difference between 1993 until 1999. Also leave an important message to you that you can read during this prewriting. In 1993 singers were artists and some ugly in 1999 singers are all models that sing. In 1993 I was 15 years old. I was a teenager in the down of my adult life and when I listen to this song on the radio I always wondered what that emotion so private that they sang was. Private Emotion: The song is from the Hooters and the lyrics are as follows: Every endless night has a dawning day Every darkest sky has a shining ray And it shines on you, baby, can't you see You're the only one who can shine for me It's a private emotion That fills you tonight And a silence falls between us As the shadows steal the light and wherever you may find it Wherever it may lead Let your private emotion come to me Come to me, come to me, come to me When your soul is tired and your heart is weak Do you think of love as a one way street? Well, it runs both ways, open up your eyes Can't you see me here, how can you deny It's a private emotion That fills you tonight And a silence falls between us As the shadows...

...hardware, and a modified Windows 2000 OS. Today, incremental innovations to the Xbox have led Microsoft to unveil the Xbox one. The Xbox 360, its predecessor, was launched in 2005 and had more components under its belt than the original Xbox. For example, the console had a custom IBM Power PC-based CPU with three 3.2 GHz cores, custom ATI graphics processor with 10 MB embedded DRAM, a 512 MB 700 MHz GDDR3 RAM, a detachable and upgradeable hard drive, a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM, support for up to four wireless game controllers, three USB 2.0 ports, and two memory unit slots. The original Xbox included an online service (Xbox Live) for players to compete against each other online, but for a premium price. On the other hand, the 360’s Xbox Live service allowed users to use the service for free by introducing a ‘Silver’ membership (free). Additionally, Xbox Live now allowed the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, as well as music, TV programs, movies, and access to third-party applications. Alongside the Xbox 360 came the release of a motion control system, the Kinect, a motion control system that used an advanced sensor system. Many different versions of the Xbox 360 were released in order to target consumers who were price sensitive, as well as those who enjoyed more memory in the...

...The short video entitle “Kambas ng Lipunan” made me realize the true face of society and the reality we live in. I have so many questions I ask myself like “What is my purpose in life? Am I on the right path? Have I done anything to help those in need?” but until now I still don’t have the answers. The maker of the short video, Joey Velasco, shared his talent and tried to make a difference in the society through his paintings Most of us would just watch and do nothing, but one man stood up and made an impact. It really is an eye-opener for the viewers to cherish and be thankful on the blessing that we receive. While I am spending money for such nonsense things, others are dying of hunger. I was a man who did not think of the value of money for others nor have I thought how hard it was to earn it, and it was proven true when I saw the clip. They are obliged to work for them to live, instead of them going to school and have a proper education for a brighter future. I don’t know how these children handle all the pressure and burden of being a breadwinner at such a young age. But as I watched the video, I can still the smile on their faces as if they don’t have problems or that they can face any obstacle they experience. It just shows that these children still haven’t lose hope of making their lives better. I have felt this extra ordinary kind of guilt within me. I can’t explain that feeling, it seems that I am very useless for I can’t do anything to those who are less fortunate...
