...With the increased standard of living, people pay more attention their quality of living. Some people believe that living in a big city has more advantages than living in the country side while others think differently. For me, I prefer living in a big city. Living in a quiet country side has several advantages. People benefit from clear air, tranquil atmosphere, less traffic and beautiful scene. In addition, people who live in small towns look out each other. This makes them feel secure. Moreover, crime rates are much less than big cities. People are comfortable leaving their doors unlocked. However, living in a metropolitan city has many more advantages. Firstly, many job opportunities are available as there are many companies, banks, offices and international companies. Secondly, there are many facilities and amenities for individuals. Publics amenities will provide services such as sports, arts and computer lessons with very low fee due to government supported programs. In addition, medical facilities and emergency systems are easily assessable when individuals live in big cities. Thirdly, people can have more choices when they buy necessities because there are numerous malls around their neighbourhood. They often buy the same material at a lower price due to bargain sales going on. Fourthly, transportation is extremely important in the modern society, but there are no public transportation systems in small towns, so individuals always use their own cars...

...“Living With Strangers” Many people think that urban life in big cities means a happy life, with no worries and just pure happiness. But what is happiness? And what makes us think that urban life is pure happiness? In the essay “Living With Strangers” by Siri Hustvedt, we hear about a woman's move from the countryside of Minnesota, to the Big Apple in New York City. Her move is described with many comparisons with her previous life and experiences, and a lot of humor, which underlines her situation and her attitude to urban life. In the following essay I am going to analyze and comment on Siri Hustvedt’s essay “Living With Strangers”. Part of my essay will focus on the genre, the attitude to urban living and the contrasts between Siri’s life in Minnesota and her new life in New York City. As said, the essay is based on Siri Hustvedt’s own life and experiences. Siri Hustvedt grew up in Minnesota, where everybody knows and greets each other. Now she lives in New York City where nobody seems to care about each other, and where greeting strangers would be “impractical and unsound”. This is a big change for her, and she uses an overwhelming amount of detailed descriptions to describe her situation in the Big Apple. She uses many personal experiences and examples, which characterizes the essay genre. Furthermore, she is very reflective, descriptive, subjective and very personal in her way of writing the essay. “It didn’t take long for me to absorb the unwritten code of survival...

...September 2011 Big and Small City Living Have you ever wondered if you’re missing out on the big city living or the small town closeness? Cities and towns are basically the same, but most cities have more to offer. I have lived in a couple of large cities such as Oklahoma City and Tulsa, but I have also lived in several small towns around Oklahoma. Before you decide where you want to live, you might want to look at some of the similarities and differences of Big City living and Small Town living. When you are in a large city and you want to grab something to eat, the decision can be hard because there are so many different places to eat. Big cities have every type of fast food you can imagine such as Chinese, Asian, American, Mexican, Greek, and many more. They also have a huge selection of chain restaurants. One type of restaurant that that you won’t find as often is the Mom and Pop restaurants. These aren’t as successful as they are in smaller cities and towns. Small town cuisine is very limited compared to city food. Most of the restaurants there are family restaurants that have been passed from generation to generation. The fast food selection in small towns is also very limited. Some small towns do not even have a single fast food eatery. In America most of our goods are purchased in stores. In large cities, there is an abundance of stores, everything from a specialty health food store to a party supply store, or even a name brand clothing store. Cities usually have several...

...Advantages and disadvantages of city life. Life in the city is not so easy as one can imagine. However, some people say that modern cities are the best thing civilization has produced. Others claim that cities are not fit for living. There are a lot of pluses and minuses of living in a city. But what are they? Firstly, in big cities there are a lot of different entertainments such as cinemas, theaters, clubs, and exhibitions. Countrymen cannot go to the museums or theaters, because many villages are situated far from cities .A further advantage of cities is a wide variety of public transport and it is very easy to get anywhere. Practically in every city there is a metro, the fastest mean of public transport, and people do not spend a lot of their time in traffic jams. As for a village there is no public transport at all and it is very difficult to get anywhere. One more advantage of city life is modern conveniences. In modern cities people have no problems with water .But in villages people face with a problem of lack of water, they cannot use running water all day long. In big cities it is very easy to take care of health, a lot of medical centers and hospitals are situated in every city, and high-qualified specialists will help people even in the most awful situation . As a rule there are no good hospitals in villages and medical services in the countries leave much to be desired. Of course, every big city has disadvantages. For example, air pollution. Every day numerous...

...Country life Where is the most ideal living? if you have two choices: living in city or in country, which one will you choose? I think the most important decision to a happy life is where you choose to spend the rest of your life and how you want to live. In the country, you can have as many pets as you want, and you can play your music as loud as you want without the neighbors complaining. The country life is quiet and peace, country living look like a nice dream: hearing natural music, seeing sights, and planting trees.. However, big city life is more appealing for the younger generation. Many young people would be bored to tears if they had to live in a country setting. The big city is full of exciting activities for the younger crowd, such as a variety of clubs, pubs, concerts, football games, and hanging out with their friends at the local mall. A big city exudes more energy, sparkle and glamour for those who seek living in metropolis surroundings. I also think country life is more healthy. There are less pollution, fewer factories and less noise in the country. Trees are more abundant in the country, which means cleaner air to breathe. You can sleep better at night without all the noises of the city. There is far less crime in the country, making it a safer place to live. country people look younger than their ages and longer life because they enjoy relax living, fresh food and fresh air, In contrast, people in city are able to look like young by doctors, and have...

...d. 14/9/2011 Essay 1 Living With Strangers The big city. Just the word gives a wealth of associations: The big city is noise and traffic, a lot of life. The big city is the anonymity in the crowd. The place where everything you do is not noted by others. The big cities came as a result of the increasing urbanization after the industrialization in the 1800s when a lot of people moved from the country to the cities to get a job. But the fact that you are now living with hundred thousands or millions of other people creates many challenges. It can especially be a problem how to deal with all the people who you do not know and who you do not manage to get to know. That is exactly the theme the American writer Siri Hustvedt takes up in her essay Living With Strangers published in The New York Times in 2002. The text is built up in three main sections. In the first part Hustvedt tells her personal story about her moving from the country where everyone knows each other and everyone always greets everyone, and to the big city New York where nobody greets each other and millions of people live side by side. She quickly learns the unwritten rule which says something like, pretend like nothing is happening, “It didn’t take long for me to absorb the unwritten code of survival in this town (…): PRETEND IT ISN’T HAPPENING” (line 17-20). Hustvedt quickly captures the reader’s interest by telling this personal story in the beginning because the reader can identify herself with her and...

...A lot of people decide to move to the countryside nowadays. However, there are still many people who prefer staying in the city and say that they couldn't live anywhere else. So which place is better to live? Let's analyse both of them. Living in a big city has a lot of advantages. First, there are many things to do in your free time: there are a lot of theatres, concerts. Second, there are shopping centres where you can buy anything you need. Third, there are a lot of working opportunities in a city: many big international companies have their offices or factories in the cities, so it is much easier to find a job in a big city. Forth, the public transport is adequate to go to work or study everyday, which makes life easier. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of living in a big city. First, cities are very crowded. The traffic may be heavy and city's car parks are always full. Sometimes it may take hours to get from a given place to another! Second, the lack of safety: the crime rates in cities tend to be always higher. Third, people in big cities are always in a hurry and live a stressful life that may lead to many illnesses. And last, cities are always more polluted than the countryside. Life in the countryside, nevertheless, is more peaceful. Life is slower and less stressful. There are no hurries and the traffic conditions are better. A lot of places can be reached on foot. Besides, there are a lot of breathtaking landscapes, forests, lakes and...

...Living with strangers What exactly is a big city and what correlation to the term ‘’urban living’’? A dictionary defines it as ‘’ The big city is used to refer to a large city which seems attractive to someone because they think there are many exciting things to do there.’’ So what relation does it have to urban living? Well, in the essay Living with strangers, written by Siri Hustvedt, we get some insight into the life of a person living in a larger city. In this essay, we get to know how everyone is a stranger and in New York City, there rules a special unwritten law, which is the law of PRETENDING IT ISN’T HAPPENING. An aspect of living with some complete strangers that Hustvedt is completely fascinated by, is the aforementioned ‘’law’’ pretend-it isn’t-happening-law, and that is an interesting way to get some insight into this urban living. It is a peculiar occurrence because you would think that moving to the cities would affect the amount of people you socialize with, but most of the time you actually spent indoors and isolated from the big world around you. When you finally move yourself out in the big world, then you spend half of the time looking into the ground and straying away from eye contact with strangers. Interactions between humans in our modern world is quite a complex subject to debate and it will be almost impossible, to find an exact answer to how one should act. Should everyone say hi to each and not really mean it, as they do in Minnesota or should they...

Hundreds and thousands of possibilities can be found and realized in the big cities, its been this way from the time after the industrialization in the 1800’s with the increase of urbanization where a lot of people moved to the big cities to get a job. But with so many people in one place comes several dilemmas, like what do you do in certain situations when people around you seem not to care as much? The lack of social interaction has a huge effect on some people, one of them being Siri Hustvedt. In her essay “Living with strangers” from 2002, Siri Hustvedt discusses how she sees “the big city” and its lack of social interaction, and what affects it has on her as a former Minnesotan. In the countryside everyone knows everybody and people greet each other like its second nature. But as Siri so quotes in her essay people in New York has an unwritten rule to “pretend it isn't happening”. She further states that even though there are so many people that you on a daily basis get up close and personal with ”... I found myself in intimate contact with people I didn’t know, my body pressed so tightly against them, I could smell their hair oils, perfumes, and sweat.” It doesn't...

Kamloops is a very comfortable place to live, because you can travel from one part of city to another just for one hour. Size of the city is not so big and there are no traffic jams on the roads. This is also very important for you if you live in one district of the city and work in another part. ...Living with strangers In the text “Living with strangers” Siri Hustvedt discusses the lack of solidarity and the social rules, one may meet in a big city, like New York City. Siri Hustvedt starts the essay by describing, the big difference she felt, when moving from rural Minnesota to New York City. She begins by briefly describing to the reader, how one was expected to behave, where she grew up. Whenever you encountered someone on the road, whether you knew them or not, you should always greet them. If you didn’t, you would be considered both rude and a snob, which was pretty much the worst thing, you could be in that part of rural Minnesota. Therefore, Siri Hustvedt quickly felt the difference between these two places, when greeting everyone you meet in downtown New York simply isn’t practical. But Hustvedt does not only describe it as impractical, but also as a kind of social code in the city. The title “Living with strangers” refers to a paradox that is apparent in every major city, although never specifically mentioned in the essay: We are becoming increasingly isolated while being surrounded by more and more people. Siri Hustvedt describes this through an anecdote from her first apartment in New York. Even though she was living alone at the time, she represents her neighbors as roommates, because she was witness to several acts that should remain private, such as a heated argument from down stairs and walking around wearing only underwear. However, she did not...

...Living in big city is something that many young people dream about. Modern cities such as New York, London, Mexico, etc are optimal place for the youngster who are willing to encounter some interesting and challenging tasks. However, life in an advance society is not easy as some people expect. In reality, it has some certain disadvantages, including the people, transportation and accomodation. One problems that urban residents encounter daily is the unreliable transportation. Because thounsands of people rely on it to reach their offices everyday, it can have an significant effect on their life. In big cities, public transportation usually do not come on time. For instance, buses which are supposed to arrive at 7.00 A.M may not show up until 8.00 A.M or even later. Sometimes, buses come in bunch, one after another. The result to this insufficient quality is the passengers missing appointments or being late at work. Personally, daily public transportation has to be safe and specific. Commuters and students who use this means of transport everyday, in particular, are in need of a dependable vehicle. Take pupils as an example, the tardy buses are likely to result in their lateness and unpleasant performance at schools. Additionally, there is always traffic congestion during rush hours when the streets are too crowded with an incredible number of people. Therefore, in order to get to their destination on time, many people have to leave their homes earlier and allow for waiting...
