...Each person defines happiness a little differently. Some may believe happiness is all about what you own in life. They think someone who has a Porsche is clearly happier than someone who only drives a piece of junk car, or the person with the mansion on the hill is much happier than the person living in the trailer park. Others might think happiness is something simpler, such as having a family to come home to or a job that pays the bills. No matter what a person’s personal definition of happiness, the most important thing about this is that they strive to reach it. Every day I am striving to reach what my idea of happiness is. I define happiness as being found by living in the present, achieved by living a virtuous life, and created through my own actions. Religions, philosophers, and psychologists all have...

...I have never been the type of person to pick up a self-help book, let alone purchase one, but when I was given the book list for this independent study course, something about Brené Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection spoke to me. I have always struggled with feelings of imperfection and finding a way to overcome my own issues with worthiness. I never thought a self-help book could change my life, but having read The Gifts of Imperfection cover to cover, I find myself being a firm believer in their power. This book is nothing like what I presumed a self-help book to be like. Brown does an excellent job of exploring self-worth and wholehearted living from the perspective of an average person, including personal stories alongside her research into the subject. Instead of giving the reader a “quick fix” to all of their problems, Brown leads them on what feels like a side-by-side journey to discovering their own worthiness, and shows them...

...Dorm Life As a college student, I did not realize the importance and the amount of responsibility that it takes to maintain a dorm room living on my own, in comparison to the expectations living at home under adult supervision. Back at home as a high school student, my priorities and expectations from my parents were to attend school five days out of the week, manage my time to complete all assignments and to complete all chores that were expected to be done on time. Some of these chores consisted of cleaning my room, taking out the trash, and do my own laundry. When it was time to clean and organize my room, I had a tendency to clean and organize it the way I felt most comfortable. I did not have to worry about arranging all my personal valuables with limited space or share a room with another person and their own valuables. It was easy for me to place objects where and how I wanted and not have to feel stressed out on where I could find certain items when I needed them. My ability to organize my room and remove myself from distractions as a college student is not the same as to living at home. The most challenging, and time consuming problems moving into a dorm room is trying to manage a room that has provided me limited space on what I can work with when moving into a whole new environment. Moving into a dorm room can cause problem such as organization of the room, the cleanliness of the room and dealing with distractions. First, placing and organizing personal items...

... walks of faith, vocations, and time periods which started from the early church fathers up to current writers. It is an excellent compilation of portions of mostly classic Christian works in devotional format. This devotional book offers a full and a complete overview of all sides of devotional life. It is a great companion to the Scriptures as it has biblical references and study questions as part of each reading. Each chapter gives me an excerpt and some thought provoking reflections by Foster and Smith. Most of the readings are profound and worthy of in-depth reading. It has made me think, contemplate and overall grow in my spiritual journey. In this paper, I will demonstrate why John Calvin is important to be studied in the 21st century. I have chosen his devotional writing as a reflection of my spiritual insights and its application to my spiritual journey. Why John Calvin Many theologians such as Augustine, Martin Luther, John Calvin and more throughout history have made a big impact on their culture, times, society, and/or religion. One of the theologians that stands out to me is John Calvin, who had a great influence during his time, the early to middle sixteenth century. Calvin is considered by many to have been the father and founder of the Presbyterian and the Reformed Protestant churches. Calvin devoted almost his whole life to promoting both Presbyterian and Protestant Reformation, and he made a significant impact that is still seen today in Christianity...

...As I grew up in my mother house it was instilled in me that you should never live with a man unless you’re married and since that was strongly installed in me that is what I live by I didn’t have the chance to live together with my husband while we were dating. It was difficult during our first year of marriage. We argued a lot, mostly for reasons like leaving clothes on the floor in the bathroom and not cleaning up after his self. Living together before making our vows would have reassured us about the lifelong commitment and basically letting us see what we were getting are self into. From my own experience, I believe that couples should live together before getting married, so they can start to know each other on a closer, more personal level and also see how compatible they are with each other. When you live together with your partner you start to know each other on a closer more personal level. For starters you learn what your partner likes and dislikes, I think there’s a lot to find out about your partner and from your partner; and I think the only way to do this is move in together. For example I didn’t know my husband liked to watch porno videos or sleep with the house freezing cold! Believe it or not, its little details like these that can often make or break a relationship. Second, you learn what kind of bad habits you and your partner have and whether or not you can get rid of them or live with all the bad habits. For example I don’t like it when my husband leaves...

...March 10 2014 Living in a house is far better than living in an apartment Living in a house opens up doors that are not available in an apartment. One advantage is the choice of people I have to interact with. When I lived in an apartment just to take the trash out I would have to put on shoulder pads and mow down 8 kids just to get there. As opposed to in my home I don’t have to leave if I choose not to. I am fully independent with all my amenities at my fingertips. Another perk is the space we have as opposed to in an apartment, I was forced to share a wall with someone so if I chose to have company or play my music there would be an overweight security guard knocking on my door hassling me to turn it down. By owning my own home now I sort of feel like my own boss in the sense that I am not regulated by the manager of an apartment. The only rules I have to abide by are my own. I also feel overall safer with my family, and the environment is much more peaceful to relax in. Where as in my apartment I felt if I wanted time outside it would take a pair of head phones and a blindfold to relax. I guess the best thing about a home is coming home at night and not having to to see a bunch of people who have their own agenda and could care less if I had a long day or that I just want to get ton my parking spot that has more than likely occupied by someone else while as in my house I pull in my garage and I’m done. Now don’t get me wrong I understand...

My apartment costs me $450.00 a month and I am proud to say I love having my own at this stage in my life. I could imagine at how annoyed you get with your roommates who are just beginning to experience the “college life”. Surprisingly, living on your own you will see a drastic change in your grades. ...has to decide whether to live on campus or live outside of campus. Actually, both of the two choices have their own advantages and disadvantages. So, different people may have different opinions. For example, they will think about the cost, location, how to make friends easily and be specific. Sometimes, it is very hard for the students to tell which one is better and which one is worse because the two choices share a lot of similarities. However, through this analysis, they may find out which one they prefer. First of all, let’s see the advantages of living on campus. First and foremost, living on campus is more convenient than living outside of campus. For instance, If you live on-campus, you can easily walk to classes, libraries, computer labs and cafeterias. You don't have to waste time and money on driving to college, finding a parking space, and so forth. And also, Residences halls usually provide almost all equipment one may need. When living off-campus, it may not be convenient for you to walk to campus so you would have to find transportation. Whether you drive your car or use a form of public transportation, it is still going to cost you money. Traffic can also be an issue if you live in a crowded area. The second advantage of living on campus is can allow you to meet more people and establish more friendships than if you live off-campus. Living in a dorm means that there will always be someone around to hang out with. You will also usually be aware of any...

... To Move Out On My Own or Stay At Home? I live at home with my parents. I live for free, I pay no bills. The refrigerator is always full, my clothes are always clean as a matter of fact I constantly come home to find new clothing on my bed, compliments of my mom. I have an IPhone 6 Plus and have never paid a phone bill. I have my own bedroom with Direct TV and my own bathroom. I pay no rent. I have a 2015 Audi A3 with full insurance coverage, and I have never paid a penny towards either. What will become me of if I move out on my own? My so-called friends keep telling me I should move out, get a place on my own. In their opinion I should be out on my own, living my life and living it up. I have convinced myself to some degree that their opinion is right, that I am nineteen and I should be out on my own. That my parents have no right to tell me what to do, or how to live, or to expect anything from me. My parents with their rules to do well in college, maintain a part time job, stay our of trouble and to please keep my room clean are just way too much to expect from me. I should be able to screw up if I want, I tell myself, and have an attitude because I am a man now. I can treat people however I want. I believe that for now I need to get my act together. I need to realize what have and start appreciating all that my parents have given to me and continue to give. I must better assess the opinions and suggestions of my so-called friends, as none have...

...two years ago, I was living with my boyfriend, and I realized that I disliked looking at our restroom. That night, the sink and the bathtub were a mess; his toiletries were not put away, and there was water around the sink. I hate filthy places and things, but I didn’t know whether my boyfriend cared or noticed it. I’m not obsessed with being sanitary, but I didn’t overlook it that night; that’s because I had cleaned everyday around the bathroom or kitchen before he used it. I could feel that I could do it for him because he probably couldn’t see it, or perhaps he forgot to clean after using it. However, he didn’t say anything even if he saw that I cleaned every day, so it made me irritated. We had a small quarrel over it. I thought his messiness was not a big problem between us, but I probably didn’t realize our differences even though they were little things. I had thought that my boyfriend was an impeccable man before living together. I felt that it was a good experience to live together because we had grown up and lived differently. Even if a couple really loves each other, they might have some gaps and distinctions between them. As a result, a couple should live together before getting married because they have to make their own new way together and should learn how to handle their differences about habits or money. First of all, knowing each other well helps to have and keep a good relationship. For instance, when I was living with my boyfriend, it helped...

...the other hand is up to us if we want to change something and how we want to do it. Like Paul Logan in ¨Zero¨ on several occasions i was inspired to make significant changes in my own life including reconsidering school, try not to fall in an addiction and being more responsible in life. After I finished with Middle School and went to High School, I started thinking about not going to school anymore. I was not thinking clearly. For some reason I did not care about going to go school anymore. Three weeks at most after I started High School I would miss class most of the time until I stopped going to school. I decided to start working, but before I did my mom talked to me and tried to change my mind. At that moment it did not work, it was already decided that I was going to start working and eventually I might go back to school. I told my Mom that I just needed to do something else at that time. It took me two years to realize that I should stay school and that by doing this I could also stay out of trouble. Most of the time at work people would ask me why was I not on school and if I had a good reason to not be going, and I did not have any. Many things happened in those two years. What made me reconsider going back to school was the many conversation that I had with different people, one of them was my boss at work, he encouraged me to go back and not to leave school again. He said that school was the only thing that could get me somewhere. Was the conversation that I had with...

... Throughout the semester, I have read a lot of intriguing arguments on various topics. An article that grasped my attention is Where is the Child’s Environment?: A Group Socialization Theory of Development” by Judith Harris. The article examines how the environment surrounding the child has more effect on the child’s personality than the parents itself. One argument presented in the article is, “These findings imply strongly that there is very little impact of the physical environment that parents provide for children and very little impact of parental characteristics that must be essentially the same for all children in a family” (Harris). Meaning, parents characteristics have minimal effect on the characteristics or personality of their offspring. We do not have time for family that we used to. This only relates to young children transitioning into young adults. That is the peak time where kids get caught up with having an interactive social life and building a strong foundation for their future. Time to interact with parents is important, even though it is natural to drift from them to have a social life. Not only that, children raised in the same household for majority of their lives tend to be different from one another. I agree with the argument demonstrated in Judith Harris’ article and I strongly believe that it is all dependant upon the era we are living in. Children do not receive the same quality time or valuable life lessons from their parents as children from...
