Another important characteristic of blobfish is the fact that they have no muscles. They are invertebrates or animals without backbones. However, blobfish are strong enough to eat. They do not go to new territory and search for food; instead, they eat whatever floats into their mouth usually some crustaceans. Crustaceans form a very large group of arthropods, usually treated as a subphylum, which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, and barnacles. Without muscles, though, blobfish can only open up their mouth a small bit to consume food. Their mouth is very odd-shaped, like a grim frown, so, as you can imagine, it would be hard to open it. There is a very logical theory about life expectancy in blobfish: 130 years. This hypothesis was formed when scientists discovered how long the average deep-sea fish lives. The length of their lives usually ranges somewhere around 130 years, so that is the background behind the hypothesis of a blobfish’s lifespan. By Phillip Smith As a child, growing up on the West Coast of America, Taco Bell, was as common as McDonalds, with locations in every neighborhood. Its classic chicken quesadilla and bean burrito were staples of my college diet and I could not imagine a fast-food landscape without the spicy taco-sauce. Although, since moving to Japan in 2005, I’ve had to settle for eating Taco Bell only when traveling outside of Japan. That being said, every other major US fast-food chain seems to be serving its notable favorites in the land of the Rising Sun. For example, McDonalds operates over 3,100 units (Inagaki, 2015), Kentucky Fried Chicken has 1165 locations (Yum!’s, 2015) and Starbucks has 1117 (Loxcel, 2015); but where is Taco Bell? On 21 April, 2015, the multinational fast-food chain answered back with its launch into the Japan market with a new location in Shibuya, Tokyo. This is not Taco Bell’s first launch in Japan. Although the story revolves around passion and violence, Dubus tells the tale in a flat, calm way. The first two acts of violence are dropped into the story unexpectedly and without emotion. The story opens with Frank’s funeral, then moves on to the conversation between Willis and Matt about how Matt wishes he could kill the man who murdered his son, but the reader does not know who killed Frank, how, or why. Next, in a long descriptive paragraph, Richard is introduced. He is first connected to Frank by the flat opening line of the next paragraph: “One night he beat Frank.” Only then does the reader learn about Mary Ann, and Matt’s and Ruth’s differing feelings about her. In a lovely, lyrical scene, Mary Ann joins the Fowlers for a barbeque after a day at the beach. Matt’s love for his son is mixed with a wistful attraction to Mary Ann. She is beautiful, but Matt sees in her eyes a sadness and pain that he and his family have been spared, and he wishes he could help and comfort her.
