For at least 1,500 years a legend has been told over and over in the Scottish Highlands that Loch Ness is home to a mysterious aquatic animal. When the Romans first came to northern Scotland in the first century A.D., they found the Highlands occupied by fierce, tattoo-covered tribes called the Picts, or painted people. The Picts were amazed by all the animals and took great care in drawing them. All of the animals they drew are easily recognizable… except for one, which has attained a mythical status. It’s a very strange animal with an elongated beak or muzzle, a head locket or spout, and fins instead of feet.

Nevertheless, eyewitnesses didn’t give up and kept bringing forth a variety of evidence. Over 4000, sober, level-headed people had turned in things on this so called monster for further research.

In the 1950’s, a book was written by a local doctor containing these run-ins, along with sketches of what these people had seen. This book inspired many people, some even quitting jobs to join along in the monster hunt. By 1958, four separate expeditions were launched. They started using sonar and were detecting moving things which they could not describe. In the 70’s people were getting sponsored to go on expeditions and they began to set up traps by combining sonar and underwater photography. They weren’t successful in capturing an exact image of the Loch Ness monster, but they did gather lots of evidence which raised lots of questions in the media and the public.

From what scientists, researchers, and Loch Ness monster fanatics have gathered so far about this creature, none of it proves that it does exist. But nothing has proved that it doesn’t either. To this day, people continue to search for the legendary beast, and the myth lives
