“Well we’re almost there” I said trying to hide my nervousness Alex turned and gave me a quick nod before looking back out the airplane window, smiling. She seemed excited but when wasn’t she. Alex is my friend, and very social one at that, she’s a fast runner but is scared easily. She came on this trip with me to meet my parents, they were staying there because of work and Alex hadn’t met them yet. When we made we made it I grabbed my luggage and waited for my dad to pick us up. When he appeared we left to go to the new house, once we made it there I saw the small house it felt so….reminiscent. It reminded me of the small house they owned when I was a kid, it was upsetting to say the least. Oh, I should probably tell you where in the world we are, my parent’s new home is in …show more content…
“Hey, Alex there’s something I need to show you” “Sure what is it?” Alex replied soon after we were heading towards the cave before we made it I told her to close her eyes and I guided her into the cave. Inside was a sleeping Loch Ness Monster, it was hard to believe this affectionate creature was actually called a monster. When Alex opened her eyes and saw Nessie she wasn’t happy to say the least. Her eyes widened, her breathe heavy but before she could scream I covered her mouth, I couldn't let her draw attention to this cave. I had to explain the situation quickly “Listen I know you're scared but they mean no harm, I brought them here when we went on that walk together the day we arrived”. At that point Nessie eyes were starting to open, it was silent for what felt like an eternity before I was flooded with questions from Alex. Nessie was completely awake now and I went to them and sat down. Nessie then placed its head on my lap as I pet them. In that time I told Alex that I need to get Nessie back to the lake before we leave and we can’t let anyone see Nessie while we do it. “It would put them in danger”, she seemed reluctant “ Okay, I’m not sure this is

...supermarket, or pretty much anywhere you can think of, one can always spot older folks talking smack about today’s youth. Oftentimes, they shout things like, “these youngins have no future-they are too entitled and want everything handed to them on a silver platter.” Along the same vein of thought, baby boomers (our grandparents) spend hours on end reminiscing about how hard working they were during their prime years. They eagerly exclaim that they paid for their own college education; that with sweat equity, they were able to build solid life foundations, that they, and all the people they grew up with, were able to buy a house, car, dog, maybe even a boat meanwhile raising their cute little children in a nice, suburban neighborhood. The stories of prosperity that our grandparents love telling, are almost unfathomable for millennials, because today, even if millennials pair up, the cost of living in most places is over the rooftops, and interest rates continue augmenting. To many millennials, the American dream has become a joke, and those “remarkable” souls who go in its pursuit, are either wealthy by default, or low-income folks who fully embrace consumerism (which bases personal worth around material possessions). In a country that operates under the notion of maximizing profits at all costs, it might seem to millennials that our only option is to follow the status quo. Our survival instincts might tell us that we must comply by the standard policies and standard way of...

...books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you...

...ask me when I stopped believing that the old man wearing the red costume was Santa, then I can confidently say: I have never believed in Santa, ever. I knew that the Santa who appeared at my preschool Christmas party was a fraud, and now that I think about it, every one of my classmates shared the same look of disbelief watching our teacher pretend to be Santa. Although I had never seen mommy kissing Santa Claus, I was already wise enough to be suspicious about the existence of an old man who worked only on Christmas Eve. However, it took me quite a bit longer to realize that the aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters and espers in those effects-filled 'good guys versus evil organization' cartoons didn't actually exist either. No, wait, I probably did realize, I just didn't want to admit it. Deep inside my heart I still wanted those aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters, espers and evil organizations to suddenly appear. Compared to this boring, normal life of mine, the world of those flashy shows was much more exciting; I wanted to live in that world too! I wanted to be the one who saved the girl kidnapped by aliens and imprisoned in a bowl-like fortress. I wanted to be the one who used my courage, intelligence and trusty laser gun to fight against villains from the future trying to change history for their own gain. I wanted to be...
