...Canadian National Railways July 22, 2013 University of Calgary Business Management “Mind Your Business” Executive Summary This report assesses CN’s quality as an employer and as an investment prospect. Mind Your Business used both primary and secondary research using publically available sources, with no contact with CN, its employees, or financial analysts, to complete this analysis. CN is a public company with 22,000 employees, and has the longest railway system in North America. Industry circles consider CN an increasingly profitable business. The Canadian Transportation Safety Board ensures CN abides by all laws and regulations. CN continually improves safety and environmental impact, which leads to better profits in the long run, particularly now that pipelines are becoming politically toxic in the eyes of the public. Recent environmental catastrophes such as the BP oil spill and the recent train explosion in Quebec, means CN must be careful with the public’s recent sensitivity to these types of environmental incidents that affect communities and their members. The company focuses highly on corporate social responsibility, with environment, education, health & safety, and community as a top concern. Rail emits less greenhouse gas emissions than heavy trucks, and CN also funds sustainability programs. The company uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure safety while improving operations, emphasizing on engineering, mechanical...

...The greatest of the silent clowns is Buster Keaton, not only because of what he did, but because of how he did it. Harold Lloyd made us laugh as much, Charlie Chaplin moved us more deeply, but no one had more courage than Buster. I define courage as Hemingway did: "Grace under pressure." In films that combined comedy with extraordinary physical risks, Buster Keaton played a brave spirit who took the universe on its own terms, and gave no quarter. I'm immersed in his career right now, viewing all of the silent features and many of the shorts with students at the University of Chicago. Having already written about Keaton's "The General" (1927) in this series, I thought to choose another title. "The Navigator," perhaps, or "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," or "Our Hospitality." But they are all of a piece; in an extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies. Most of these movies were long thought to be lost. "The General," with Buster as a train engineer in the Civil War, was always available, hailed as one of the supreme masterpieces of silent filmmaking. But other features and shorts existed in shabby, incomplete prints, if at all, and it was only in the 1960s that film historians began to assemble and restore Keaton's lifework. Now almost everything has been recovered, restored, and is available on DVDs and tapes that range from watchable to sparkling. It's said...

...Chapter 4: Feasibility of Proposed Standards CHAPTER 4: Feasibility of Proposed Standards Section 213(a)(3) of the Clean Air Act presents statutory criteria that EPA must evaluate in determining standards for nonroad engines and vehicles. The standards must "achieve the greatest degree of emission reduction achievable through the application of technology which the Administrator determines will be available for the engines or vehicles to which such standards apply, giving appropriate consideration to the cost of applying such technology within the period of time available to manufacturers and to noise, energy, and safety factors associated with the application of such technology." This chapter presents the technical analyses and information that form the basis of EPA's belief that the proposed emission standards are technically achievable accounting for all the above factors. 4.1 CI Recreational Marine The proposed emission standards CI recreational marine engines are summarized in the Executive Summary. We believe that manufacturers will be able to meet these standards using technology similar to that required for the commercial marine engine standards. This section discusses technology currently used on CI recreational marine engines and anticipated technology to meet the proposed standards. In addition, this section discusses the emission test procedures and not-to-exceed requirements. 4.1.1 Baseline Technology for CI Recreational Marine Engines We developed estimates...
